Do owners place too much emphasis on RB 2 in drafts?  I believe so.

Most owners have their RB2 position drafted by Round 3 and are passing up much more value at other positions.  In 2007, the #13 fantasy RB (the #1 RB2 in a 12 man league) averaged about 12.65 pts a game....the #24 RB (the last RB2 in a 12 man league) averaged about 10.26 pts a game....the 30th RB scored about 9.68 pts a game.   So if you waited very late in a draft...you only lose 3 pts a game at RB 2.

The benefit is that you will be ahead at every other position.  You should have a TOP 5 TE, TOP 5 QB, and one of the best WR groups.  If you use IDP's you should also be way ahead there too.

I am testing this theory in a new Zealots league....and so far I feel that I do have a signicant adavantage at every position.

Here is my roster thus far...

QB---Drew Brees (I rank him #3 overall...but at worst #6)

RB 1 --- Adrian Peterson (another TOP 3 player)
RB 2 --- Duece McAlister (drafted round 15.1)

WR1 --- Reggie Wayne (I have him #1...but at least TO 3)
WR2 --- Brandon Marshall (A top Ten WR)
WR 3,4,5,6  (Reggie Brown, Donte Stallworth, Ronald Curry,Drew Bennett)***I have the same theory on WR's after TOP 18.....19 - 45 all close in value...I waited late to draft these 4 who I felt dropped VERY far.

TE --- Jason Witten (I have him #2...but at worst #5)

DL1 --- Aaron Kampman (I rank #2)
DL2 --- Trent Cole (I rank #4)
DL3 --- Aaron Schobel (I rank #7) BACKUP

LB1 --- Demeco Ryans (I rank #2)
LB2 --- Kirk Morrison (I rank #5)
LB3 --- Nick Barnett (I rank #6)

DB1 --- Adrian Wilson (I rank #1)
DB2 --- Sean Jones (I rank #2)
DB3 --- Bob Sanders (I rank #3)
DB4 --- Roman Harper (I rank #6) Backup

Whether you agree with my rankings or not is irrevelant with my point.  By me not following the norm of drafting a RB2 at a higher spot....and also staying away from WR3's that were ranked #20 on my board...I was able to take:

A very good QB

A TOP TE

A TOP WR in Brandon Marshall in RD 3 instrad of an AVG RB 2

I will start the #2 & #4 DL's on my list...

At LB I will start the #2, #5, and #6 guys on my list...

At DB I will start the TOP 3 guys on my list...

I feel my DL2 + LB2 + LB3 + DB2 + DB3 + TE + QB will easily make up my RB2 pts....

So I feel I gained a ton by waiting to RD 15 to grab a RB2....I am pretty sure I gained a lot more than 3 points.  I will be focusing the rest of the draft on taking a shot on a RB that could be a surprise, more WR prospects, a backup QB, and grab a few IDP's that get overlooked that I can later trade.

Your thoughts on not drafting a RB2 & I guess a WR3 too until the late rounds?   Don't get me wrong...if a TOP 10 RB or TOP 15 WR are still on the BOARD...I would draft them.

Hey RunHard

I have been talking about RBBC and the effect it has had on FF for almost 2 years. The quality, non rbbc, #2 rb is only available to a select, lucky few in drafts these days. The most important factor to determine the value of RB #2  is the scoring system and roster requirements. You need to realize in zealot leagues, the league you drafted and posted, requires that you start a second RB. So whether you believe it to be overrated or not you will need to start one and you do have a glaring hole in your team. Deuce will be lucky to be with the Saints let alone return anywhere near to form of the good old days. Had you grabbed a top #3 wr I could  cut you some slack but the wrs you mentioned are average. Maybe you have some upside RBs to overcome the deuce dilema but the team you posted will be at a disadvantage IMO.

On the positive side you have drafted an excellent all around team and should have enough players to be very competitive every week and I am sure playoff bound.

I agree RB2 is my biggest whole, followed by WR 3 +.  But I do feel there are teams that have RBBC that I can plug in and get 5 pts a week...while the #16 RB overall will average about 9 pts.  To me at worst I am losing 4 pts to every teams RB2...but again I feel that this will be made up in all other areas.
