The Jets signed TE Dustin Keller, the #30 pick, to a multi-year deal on Friday.
Keller will have to battle vets Chris Baker and Bubba Franks, plus several other players to get much playing time in 2008. The good news is that none of them are very good.

The Baltimore Ravens and Joe Flacco, the team's first-round draft pick, agreed in principle Wednesday night to a five-year deal expected to reach $30 million.
Flacco, the former University of Delaware standout, is expected to earn over $30 million which includes a guaranteed money of $8.75 million, according to his agent, Joe Linta.
This is good news for the young signal caller if he has any chance of starting in week 1. He is still a longshot sure, but they didn't move back up in the first to get him for nothing.

The Dallas Cowboys have signed FS Ken Hamlin to a new 6-year contract worth $39 million, including $15 million guaranteed.
Hamlin had his finest season as a pro in 2007, including his first trip to the Pro Bowl. This really locks up a good secondary for Dallas for the long term, especially if Adam Jones actually gets to play AND keep his nose clean.

The Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with FA RB Kevin Jones on a 1-year, $605, 000 contract according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network.
Well this definitely puts a little hesitation in drafting Matt Forte now. Forte is still the future, but Jones plays almost the same type of game as Forte, so this will almost certainly means he splits carries, a t the elast, with Jones for 2008.

Colts QB Peyton Manning will miss 4-6 weeks after having a bursa sac removed from his left knee. That timetable means he would miss at least the start of training camp. The Colts open camp on July 25 and break camp on Aug. 15.
"The procedure was routine. The Colts' medical staff expects a full and complete return to action," said Colts president Bill Polian.
He will most likely miss a good portion of training camp, but if anyone can get away with missing some time, Peyton is that guy. This is nothing to be concerned about, Manning is still the #2 QB in fantasy circles.

Former Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry has tested positive for marijuana again, reports Fox 31 Sports in Colorado.
An NFL source told the television station late Thursday about the positive test and said Henry likely would be suspended for a year for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
This is the second time that he faces a 1-year suspension for drugs. He beat the last one on a technicality, but you can bet the league covered their bases on this one. If he is indeed suspended for a year, it may be his death knell in the NFL.

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones was arrested early Thursday morning in his former college town and charged with felony possession of cocaine. Jones, 25, and two other men were arrested just before 1:00 a.m. on Thursday after police said they observed Jones cutting up cocaine with a credit card in a car.
A first-round draft pick by the Jaguars in 2005, Jones has been a disappointment as a wide receiver in the NFL. The 6-foot-6, 238-pound wideout had 24 catches for 317 yards and four touchdowns last season, and has 101 catches for 1,392 yards and 13 scores in three seasons with Jacksonville.
Just another player with loads of talent that couldn't control themselves. The writing was on the wall that the team would cut him before this, now it just becomes when.

Ex-San Diego Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was killed in a car smash, police said Saturday. He was 27.
San Diego police said Kiel's body was thrown from his 2004 Chevrolet sedan, which crashed into a wall.
Kiel, who was driving alone after leaving a party, was conscious when paramedics arrived at the crash. He was pronounced dead shortly after.
A 2003 second-round National Football League entry draft selection, Kiel appeared in 59 games over parts of four seasons with the Chargers.

Cleveland Browns' wide receiver Joe Jurevicius underwent a second knee surgery this week after experiencing discomfort and swelling in the surgically-repaired joint.
No determination has been regarding Jurevicius' availability for the start of training camp. |
The San Diego Chargers on Tuesday signed two of their 2008 draft picks, running back Marcus Thomas and tackle Corey Clark, to four-year contracts.
A fifth-round selection, Thomas rushed for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior at Texas-El Paso.
Clark, who was taken in the seventh round, was a two-year starter at Texas A&M.
Thomas is a pounding back and could easily surprise Fantasy owners in 2008. There is a chance he will get a shot to be the goal line back. Keep your eye on him to see how the Chargers use him during training camp.

They are called the Field Generals. Well, once they make it to the field that is. On average, only 12 quarterbacks are drafted each year and any others that make it to the NFL get in through the free agency process. 90% of those rookies will not see any playing time for at least a year, maybe longer. Even then, 25-50% of them may never see a starting or back-up spot, and slowly fade into oblivion. You see this at every position, but it seems to be more prominent at QB, because there is so much attention paid to them during the draft process. Yet the ones that make it are there, year’s later, making history in one fashion or another.
So the question remains; is a first round pick in the real NFL Draft worth a QB that may still be holding the clipboard 2 or possibly 3 years later? NFL teams take this gamble every year. Sometimes they win, sometimes not. In 2006, 3 QBs were drafted in round one and despite the odds, all 3 got a chance to start for their teams, and look to continue to start in 2007. In contrast, 1998 had 2 QBs that were drafted with the first two picks. One, Peyton Manning, eventually took his team to the Super Bowl, the other, Ryan Leaf became one of the biggest busts in NFL history.
From a fantasy perspective, whether to draft these young QBs truly depends on the type of league you are in. In redraft leagues, they are not worth drafting. In dynasty leagues, especially large roster leagues, most of these QB’s will be drafted, but the more you know about each one, will help you to make the right picks at the right time.
Therefore, with that in mind, here are nine rookies in the class of 2007, waiting to be the next Field General of their NFL team and your fantasy team.

When the Wizard of Cheeseheads asked me to write here, he told me that I had free reign to write whatever I wanted. He wasn’t even concerned that I write about football. There are no rules at the Whiz! I was pretty happy and started planning articles about beer, Tijuana, strippers, dwarf tossing, oil wrestling. The opportunities are endless!
I feel like Michael Irvin at the Cowboys’ “White House.” I’m like Taz at a steakhouse buffet. I’m like Rock playing Scrabble. Anything goes!
But given that FF Whiz is a fantasy football site, I ought to write a little about football. So here it goes:
Why is Joey Porter punching out offensive linemen at a blackjack table at the Palms in Vegas?
Porter is notoriously confrontational, and the incidents have been colorful and numerous. In December, he made headlines when he referred to Kellen Winslow, Jr. with a homosexual slur. In 2004, he was ejected from a game for beating down running back William Green BEFORE a game between the Steelers and Browns. (How do you get ejected from a game that hasn’t started? ) At first glance, Porter’s arrest seems like typical Joey Porter behavior.
But not so fast with the suspension, Commissioner Dredd. I have a reasonable doubt.
Before we throw the shackles on Joey, we ought to take a look at the other guy; Cincinnati offensive tackle, Levi Jones. The 6’5” offensive tackle is three inches taller and 57 pounds heavier than Porter. The two have a history of mixing it up on the field, and, like Porter, Jones is no angel off the field. In 2004, he was arrested after attempting to wrestle a nightstick from a police officer during the arrest of another patron in a Houston nightclub. But the real reason to suspect that Levi was the instigator? He’s a Bengal.
Sounds like self-defense to me.

A solid receiving corps is the backbone of a successful dynasty team.
In order for a team to stay near the top over a long period of time, it must maintain its WRs. RBs win championships, we all know that. The problem is that, in order to get the top prospects at running back, you need to finish poorly a couple of seasons to get the early draft picks. This conflicts with the goal of being a top team year after year. As a dynasty champion, and as a dynasty perennial playoff team, an owner should spend more time researching the WRs than any other position. It is likely that the WRs will be the best talent available when it is time to pick in the late 1st round of a dynasty rookie draft.
That said, there are always a couple of teams that draft early in the 1st round of the dynasty rookie draft that will take the "can’t miss" WR prospect. This year, that prospect is Calvin Johnson. Yes, I like the rest of the fantasy world am a big time Johnson fan. But before I throw myself into writing the massive amount of Johnson hype that I plan to, let me throw out some names. David Terrell, Koren Robinson, Mike Williams, Charlie Rogers, Peter Warrick… I think you get the idea. All of those players were can’t miss prospects coming out of college, with the same type of hype that Johnson is receiving. My point is, don’t risk an early 1st round pick on a "can’t miss" WR, because they often do miss. Hopefully you are not drafting near the top of the 1st round too often. When you are unfortunate enough to be picking early, you are best served to use that chance to build your RBs.
So let’s dig in and take a look at this year’s rookie receiving class. There are not a lot of guys that will be able to help you right away. We will primarily be looking for the players that will be the studs of the league in the next three years (Hello Mr. Lasik).

There is a lot of debate about the borderline with Mexico in the southwestern United States these days, but unfortunately for the state of Arizona that is not the only line that they seem to be having issues with. The Arizona Cardinals' offensive line has failed to stop oncoming defenses and it has hindered the Cardinals' arsenal from being truly productive. Worse yet, the defensive line has yet to show any signs of being able to defend their goal line, or any other part of the field for that matter. They need immediate help both in protecting their offensive weapons, and in keeping opposing offenses out of their end zone.

It's time to start taking a look at the 2007 rookie class. Naturally, it is difficult to project how each player will perform in the short term until we find out where they land, but when focusing on dynasty value it is a different story. Many rookies will take some time to develop, and by the time they are ready to contribute they may be in a completely different situation than they were on draft day. When it comes to preparing for a dynasty draft, it is best to look at raw talent and not worry about how much playing time they will see in the first couple of seasons. If the talent is there, they will shine fantasy wise - often sooner rather than later. NFL teams will make sure the best talent gets a chance to show what they can do.
Let's start with the tight end position. The TE is an awkward position in fantasy football. A top tier player will win you some games in fantasy football, but it is not a position that you should rely on to carry your team. If you are looking to draft a TE early, you should make sure that your core positions (QB, RB, WR, and LB) are solid and intact for the future. If you have that luxury, it is likely that you are set to draft in the back half of your dynasty rookie draft. With most dynasty owners of that mindset, the quality TE prospect will usually fall to the late 1st or late 2nd round in a dynasty rookie draft. While the 2007 rookie TE class does not compare to the 2006 class there still are a couple of guys that are worth early 2nd round dynasty consideration. >>Read More>>
