Cleveland Browns' wide receiver Joe Jurevicius underwent a second knee surgery this week after experiencing discomfort and swelling in the surgically-repaired joint.
No determination has been regarding Jurevicius' availability for the start of training camp. |
The San Diego Chargers on Tuesday signed two of their 2008 draft picks, running back Marcus Thomas and tackle Corey Clark, to four-year contracts.
A fifth-round selection, Thomas rushed for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior at Texas-El Paso.
Clark, who was taken in the seventh round, was a two-year starter at Texas A&M.
Thomas is a pounding back and could easily surprise Fantasy owners in 2008. There is a chance he will get a shot to be the goal line back. Keep your eye on him to see how the Chargers use him during training camp.

The Chicago Bears have agreed to a deal with 2nd round rookie RB Matt Forte on a 4-year contract. The terms of the contract have not been disclosed.
Forte is considered to be the starter for the Bears when training camp opens up, but temper some expectations with the fact that the Bears offense probably won't be very good this year.

Carolina Panthers' second-year receiver Dwayne Jarrett pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated on Monday, receiving a 30-day suspended sentence, revocation of his driver's license, $420 in costs and fines, and 24 hours of community service.
The DWI places Jarrett in the league's substance abuse program, but it is unclear whether there will be additional penalties coming from the NFL following the guilty plea. |

Tennessee Titan's DE Jevon "The Freak" Kearse was arrested early Sunday morning in Nashville for DUI.
Nashville police say Kearse was "speeding and swerving several times" while behind the wheel. Kearse reportedly exhibited red eyes, slurred speech, and his breath smelled like alcohol when an officer pulled him over.
This is Kearse's first strike, so the league will likely not take any action against him.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Green Bay Packers are pursing a possible deal to acquire veteran defensive end Jason Taylor from the Miami Dolphins.
The Packers inquired about Taylor before the NFL Draft, but Miami's asking price was considered too high. The price has reportedly dropped, and Taylor is rumored to be pressing for a trade, so the Packers are exploring their options. |

Mascot Love Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Johnson will undergo surgery to have bone chips removed from his ankle. This is something that the team asked him to do as soon as the season ended and he is just doing it now.
The team cannot be happy that he waited, but he should be ready by training camp....Unless of course he decides he needs some extra time to rest (and not practice)...

Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker was found unconscious on a Las Vegas street Monday after apparently being the victim of a robbery.
Police spokesman Bill Cassell said in a statement that Walker was taken to a hospital with "significant injuries" after being found early Monday on a street off the Las Vegas Strip.
Cassell said Walker remained in fair condition at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.
Several sources have said that Walker had an "orbital fracture", which is a fracture of the bones around the eye socket, but this has not yet been confirmed.
This is not what Walker needed before the start of training camp, but we all hope that he is okay.

New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress showed up to the start of Giants manditory minicamp on Wednesday, but quickly proclaimed that he wasn't going to practice until the Giants negotiate a new contract with him.
Surprise, surprise, surprise the malcontent wants more money. I am getting so tired of this mentality. I say if he wants a new contract give it to him.......but with caveats.
Must attend ALL practice sessions.
Must keep his mouth shut.
Must keep out of jail.

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to a 6-year, $70 million contract extention with DE Will Smith on Wednesday. $26 million of the contract is guaranteed.

It's 3:38 in the a.m. That's Crazy! That bird's a liar! That goat is staring at me! That's Crazy!
I can't sleep, so I'm watching the NFL Channel. God made the NFL channel for insomnaics. Eric Dickerson is rushing for a measly 46 yards in the Rams' loss to the Bears in the '85 Conference Championship. I gotta get me some Eric Dickerson glasses. They'd look great with my Jim McMahon headband.
I don't care what Larry Birkhead and the DNA evidence say, that kid is mine.

There are sites out there with no guts. They never want to just hang a few bold predictions out there for people to take or leave. Those who know me know that I just can't be a vanilla no-risk pansy like that. So if you don't like risky/bold predictions about what's going to happen - possibly including injuries - then the Out On A Limb series is not going to be your cup of tea.
The point, of course, will be to highlight a player or two with each entry that will help you win your league. Even the guy with LaDainian Tomlinson needed help last year, so finding those value picks is a critical part of the game.
So without further ado... installment one of the Out On A Limb Series.
The Cutler/Walker Connection

I know the rest of the world hates Joe Theismann, but I love the guy. I'm the one guy who is unhappy he's lost his gig. He's old-school. He's opinionated. He's narcissistic, but he's also intermittently self-effacing. He doesn't mind if guests crack on him about his career-ending injury (and about all of them do). He was an undersized player and he wore that cool single-bar facemask. Joe is arrogant. Joe is obstinate. Joe is cool.
Theismann is also a better color guy than Ron Jaworski. Joe doesn't have Jaworski's mind, but Ron is made to break down film and cheese it up for the camera. Joe is probably better suited for color for all the reasons that the rest of you hate him. He pisses people off and says idiotic things. That's entertainment! Ron Jaworski is just too smart and too slick. Just like Norman Einstein. You'd never see Joe in those fancy ten-button suit and designer glasses.
The main reason I'll miss Joe is that he's a little dumb. Dumb people say funny stuff. Here are a few of the best.
Top-Five Joe Theismann quotes:

Our good friends over at Zealots Field have just recently put together a New and Improved www.zealotsfield.com website with updates and links to every Zealot league, a detailed list of Who's Who, and a new Zealot Field Press section where a very talented writing group provides interesting views on Zealots Field and it's players.
With that last point in mind, let me introduce Mr. Chris Fries who is a Czar at Zealots Field, as well as being the Chief Writer. Every once in a while we will highlight a great piece of work done by Chris and his staff, and today is one of those days.

They are called the Field Generals. Well, once they make it to the field that is. On average, only 12 quarterbacks are drafted each year and any others that make it to the NFL get in through the free agency process. 90% of those rookies will not see any playing time for at least a year, maybe longer. Even then, 25-50% of them may never see a starting or back-up spot, and slowly fade into oblivion. You see this at every position, but it seems to be more prominent at QB, because there is so much attention paid to them during the draft process. Yet the ones that make it are there, year’s later, making history in one fashion or another.
So the question remains; is a first round pick in the real NFL Draft worth a QB that may still be holding the clipboard 2 or possibly 3 years later? NFL teams take this gamble every year. Sometimes they win, sometimes not. In 2006, 3 QBs were drafted in round one and despite the odds, all 3 got a chance to start for their teams, and look to continue to start in 2007. In contrast, 1998 had 2 QBs that were drafted with the first two picks. One, Peyton Manning, eventually took his team to the Super Bowl, the other, Ryan Leaf became one of the biggest busts in NFL history.
From a fantasy perspective, whether to draft these young QBs truly depends on the type of league you are in. In redraft leagues, they are not worth drafting. In dynasty leagues, especially large roster leagues, most of these QB’s will be drafted, but the more you know about each one, will help you to make the right picks at the right time.
Therefore, with that in mind, here are nine rookies in the class of 2007, waiting to be the next Field General of their NFL team and your fantasy team.
