Newly signed quarterback Brad Johnson made it clear that his signing with the Dallas Cowboys was not one to mentor young quarterback Tony Romo, but to be "ready to play at any moment." He stated, "I've never agreed with that terminology, that term: mentor."

Johnson has lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Super Bowl championship in 2002. His arrival in Dallas was based on his opportunity to play and being friends with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. He also stated, "My thing is to work hard in practice and have a great relationship with Tony (Romo) and hopefully he has the best year of his life."

The NFL Network is reporting that the New York Jets have reached a contract extension agreement with running back Thomas Jones.

Jones' new deal is reportedly for four years at $20 million.

The Oakland Raiders announced Tuesday that they have signed free agent center Jeremy Newberry to a contract.

Newberry is a two-time Pro Bowler who has played his entire career with the San Francisco 49ers since they drafted him in 1998. He earned Pro Bowl bids in 2001 and 2002.

Kansas City quarterback Trent Green could be leaving the teams soon, as the franchise has requested him to restructure his current contract that sees him getting paid $7.2 million next season.

Green's agent, Jim Steiner, has stated that they are going to see what the options are at this point. The Chiefs issued a statement that talks are "amicable and productive."

The Carolina Panthers have released backup quarterback Chris Weinke according to reports from ESPN.com.

Weinke was a fourth-round draft selection by the Panthers in the 2001 draft. Also, he won the Heisman Trophy in 2000 while playing for Florida State. He started 15 games in his first season when the Panthers finished 1-15. He was finally replaced by quarterback Rodney Peete at the beginning of the 2002 season.

The Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday re-signed running back Musa Smith to a one-year contract, reports the Baltimore Sun.

Smith is not slated to start. The Ravens intend to bring in a starting RB, and have been involved in discussions with Jamal Lewis and Corey Dillon, in addition to discussing a possible trade with the Bills for Willis McGahee.

Newly releaesed wide receiver Joe Horn is going to give the Atlanta Falcons the first opportunity to offer him a deal to join the team. Horn's agent, Ralph Vitolo, feels that something should be decided in the next 24-48 hours.  If no deal is agreed upon, Horn will begin looking elsewhere for employment.

ESPN.com reports that the San Francisco 49ers have reached a contract agreement with free agent linebacker Tully Banta-Cain, formerly of the New England Patriots.

Adam Schefter of NFL.com is reporting that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and free agent tackle Luke Petitgout have agreed to a deal.

UPDATE: The deal is for three years and $15.5 million.

Green Bay Packers' fullback William Henderson told WBAY on Monday that the Packers intend to relase the veteran as soon as Thursday.

Henderson's departure will mean that quarterback Brett Favre is the last remaining member of the team to have played in Superbowl XXXI.

Free agent running back Paul Smith because the second new RB added to the Denver Broncos' roster on Monday.

Smith joins the Broncos after spending time with the Rams, Lions, and 49ers during the course of his seven years in the NFL. He will join Travis Henry as new players in the Denver backfield.
