Browns' WR Jurevicius Undergoes 2nd Knee Surgery

Cleveland Browns' wide receiver Joe Jurevicius underwent a second knee surgery this week after experiencing discomfort and swelling in the surgically-repaired joint.

No determination has been regarding Jurevicius' availability for the start of training camp.

Chargers Sign RB Thomas, T Clark
Image The San Diego Chargers on Tuesday signed two of their 2008 draft picks, running back Marcus Thomas and tackle Corey Clark, to four-year contracts.

A fifth-round selection, Thomas rushed for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior at Texas-El Paso.

Clark, who was taken in the seventh round, was a two-year starter at Texas A&M.

Thomas is a pounding back and could easily surprise Fantasy owners in 2008. There is a chance he will get a shot to be the goal line back. Keep your eye on him to see how the Chargers use him during training camp.

Bears Agree To Deal With RB Forte

ImageThe Chicago Bears have agreed to a deal with 2nd round rookie RB Matt Forte on a 4-year contract. The terms of the contract have not been disclosed.

Forte is considered to be the starter for the Bears when training camp opens up, but temper some expectations with the fact that the Bears offense probably won't be very good this year.

Panthers' WR Jarrett Pleads Guilty to DWI

Carolina Panthers' second-year receiver Dwayne Jarrett pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated on Monday, receiving a 30-day suspended sentence, revocation of his driver's license, $420 in costs and fines, and 24 hours of community service.

The DWI places Jarrett in the league's substance abuse program, but it is unclear whether there will be additional penalties coming from the NFL following the guilty plea.

"The Freak" Arrested For DUI

ImageTennessee Titan's DE Jevon "The Freak" Kearse was arrested early Sunday morning in Nashville for DUI.

Nashville police say Kearse was "speeding and swerving several times" while behind the wheel. Kearse reportedly exhibited red eyes, slurred speech, and his breath smelled like alcohol when an officer pulled him over.

This is Kearse's first strike, so the league will likely not take any action against him.

Packers Pursuing DE Jason Taylor

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Green Bay Packers are pursing a possible deal to acquire veteran defensive end Jason Taylor from the Miami Dolphins.

The Packers inquired about Taylor before the NFL Draft, but Miami's asking price was considered too high. The price has reportedly dropped, and Taylor is rumored to be pressing for a trade, so the Packers are exploring their options.

Ocho Cinco To Have Surgery

Mascot Love
Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Johnson will undergo surgery to have bone chips removed from his ankle. This is something that the team asked him to do as soon as the season ended and he is just doing it now.

The team cannot be happy that he waited, but he should be ready by training camp....Unless of course he decides he needs some extra time to rest (and not practice)...

Raider WR Found Unconscious In Las Vegas
ImageRaiders wide receiver Javon Walker was found unconscious on a Las Vegas street Monday after apparently being the victim of a robbery.

Police spokesman Bill Cassell said in a statement that Walker was taken to a hospital with "significant injuries" after being found early Monday on a street off the Las Vegas Strip.

Cassell said Walker remained in fair condition at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

Several sources have said that Walker had an "orbital fracture", which is a fracture of the bones around the eye socket, but this has not yet been confirmed.

This is not what Walker needed before the start of training camp, but we all hope that he is okay.

Burress Wants New Contract

ImageNew York Giants WR Plaxico Burress showed up to the start of Giants manditory minicamp on Wednesday, but quickly proclaimed that he wasn't going to practice until the Giants negotiate a new contract with him.

Surprise, surprise, surprise the malcontent wants more money. I am getting so tired of this mentality. I say if he wants a new contract give it to him.......but with caveats.

Must attend ALL practice sessions.
Must keep his mouth shut.
Must keep out of jail.

Saints, DE Smith Agree On Extention
ImageThe New Orleans Saints have agreed to a 6-year, $70 million contract extention with DE Will Smith on Wednesday. $26 million of the contract is guaranteed.

Injury Watch

Arizona Cardinals
Mike Gandy (OT) 10/22: The Cardinals lost offensive tackle Mike Gandy to a galf injury suffered in the third quarter of Sunday's game. With Gandy out, Levi Brown slid over from left tackle and Elton Brown stepped into to the left side. Coach Whisenhunt later said that he is unsure how long Gandy will be sidelined.
Adrian Wilson (S) From Last Week:Wilson played with a hamstring injury. He registered 2 solo tackles.
Kurt Warner (QB) From Last Week: Warner played with a brace on his injured elbow, throwing 41 times with 27 completions, 282 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.
Karlos Dansby (LB) From Last Week: Linebacker Karlos Dansby is expected to miss a little more time with a sprained knee, but reports are surfacing that indicate he has a chance to return this week.
Aaron Francisco (S) From Last Week: Reserve safety Aaron Francisco has a tear in his MCL, and is expected to miss another two-to-three weeks.
Anquan Boldin (WR) From Last Week: Boldin was on the field Sunday, catching 8 passes, including 2 touchdowns. He only managed 26 yards, and is likely still limited, but barring a setback or fresh injury, expect him to keep playing and getting healthier each week.

Atlanta Falcons
Byron Leftwich (QB) 10/21: Byron Leftwich finally got his first start as a Falcon on Sunday, throwing 15 of 23 for 145 and a touchdown before suffering a high ankle sprain. After the game, he was wearing a boot and using crutches. Joey Harrington took over for the remainder of the game, throwing 12 of 18 for 128 yards. Leftwich is expected to miss at least two weeks, and head coach Bobby Petrino indicated that there is no certainty when the quarterback will be able to return. Petrino muddied the water even more by saying, "I'm hoping Byron's on a timetable that he's back at some point." Some point. Wonderful. Welcome back, Joey! They never doubted ye.

Update: 10/24: Leftwich is reportedly undergoing a surgical procedure that will insert two screws in his badly sprained ankle. The surgery reportedly has a high rate of success, and may allow him to return to the field in about two weeks.

Renardo Foster (OL) 10/21: Foster, starting with left tackle Todd Weiner sidelined, was carted off the field in the fourth quarter after suffering a left knee injury. He was placed on IR on Monday. Second-year pro Quinn Ojinnaka is expected to take over Foster's left tackle position.
Alge Crumpler (TE) From Last Week: Crumpler was sidelined Sunday with knee and ankle injuries. Blakley had 1 reception for 4 yards, while rookie Milner caught 2 passes for 10. He will not need surgery, and the Falcons hope Crumpler will be ready to play after the bye week.
Todd Weiner (OL) From Last Week: Starting right tackle Todd Weiner is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his knee, and will miss another one-to-five weeks.

Baltimore Ravens
Chris McAlister (CB) From Last Week: McAlister sat out Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills with a knee injury that was rumored to sideline him for up to six week. McAlister and the Ravens insist that they are targeting November 5th as his return date. Samari Rolle started in McAlister's place.
Steve McNair (QB) From Last Week: Steve McNair is dealing with both his groin, which has bothered him for several weeks now, and a sore back. He sat out Sunday's loss to the Bills. Kyle Boller replaced him, throwing 21 of 36 for 191 yards and a touchdown.
Mike Flynn (C) From Last Week: Center Mike Flynn played Sunday, but appeared to aggravate his right knee injury.
Todd Heap (TE) From Last Week: Tight end Todd Heap has a hamstring injury that prevented him from playing in Sunday's loss to the Bills.
Jonathan Ogden (OT) From Last Week: Ogden, dealing with a turf toe injury that prompted head coach Brian Billick to suggest that the team may end up putting Ogden on IR if he was not ready to play this week, was active on Sunday, but did not start. He entered the game in the second quarter.

Update: 10/23: Ogden played for about a dozen snaps on Sunday, but seems pleased with the way his injured foot and toe have responded. He said that he couldn't have played the entire game, but more so because he is not in game shape.

Buffalo Bills
Sam Aiken (WR) From Last Week: Receiver Sam Aiken sat out Sunday's win over the Ravens with a hamstring injury.

Update: 10/25: Aiken practiced Wednesday, but did not appear to be doing much during individual drills on Thursday. Coach Dick Jauron said that Aiken fully participated in team drills.

Brad Butler (OL) From Last Week: Depite practicing during the week, the Bills decided to deactivate Butler due to his hip injury.
Ashton Youboty (CB) From Last Week: Youboty sat out Sunday's game against the Ravens with an ankle injury. Youboty has lost his starting job to Jabari Greer.

Update: 10/25: Youboty sat out both Wednesday and Thursday practices.

Jim Leonhard (S) From Last Week: Safety Jim Leonhard missed Sunday's game against the Ravens with a calf injury.

Update: 10/25: Leonhard did some limited work on Thursday, and may be available for Sunday's game. If he is, it seems unlikely that he will start.

J.P. Losman (QB) From Last Week: Quarterback J.P. Losman suffered a sprained knee in week 3 and was the backup behind Edwards on Sunday. Expect the Bills to stick with Edwards from here on out, regardless of Losman's health.

Carolina Panthers
DeShaun Foster (RB) 10/25: Running back DeShaun Foster is dealing with a case of turf toe and missed Wednesday's practice, but he participated on Thursday and insists that he will play on Sunday.

Update: 10/26: Foster has been listed as probable after participating in practices both Thursday and Friday.

David Carr (QB) From Week 5: (The Panthers Had A Bye In Week 7 - the following is the Week 6 Report) Quarterback David Carr suffered a back injury last Sunday that forced him from the game temporarily. He appeared healthy enough to start in week 6, but his back tightened up on him during the flight to the west coast and he ended up sidelined while Vinny Testaverde started. Testaverde is not a threat to take the starting job on a long-term basis, so look for Carr to start in week 8 following the Panthers' bye.

Update: 10/25: Carr practiced both Wednesday and Thursday, but coach John Fox is holding off on naming him the starter over Vinny Testaverde. Fox has indicated that Carr will start if he is healthy.

Update: 10/26: Coach John Fox decided Friday that Carr is not quite ready to regain the starting job. Carr, listed as probable, will back up Vinny Testaverde on Sunday.

Nick Goings (RB) From Week 5: (The Panthers Had A Bye In Week 7 - the following is the Week 6 Report) Goings sat out Sunday's game with a concussion. It was the second game that Goings has missed. He should be okay following the bye week.

Update: 10/18: Goings is targeting the October 28th game against the Indianapolis Colts to return.

Update: 10/24: The Panthers placed Goings on injured reserve Wednesday. He was not responding quickly enough as he recovered from his most recent concussion. Linebacker Donte Curry was signed to the open roster spot.

Dan Morgan (LB)

From Week 5: (The Panthers Had A Bye In Week 7 - the following is the Week 6 Report) We're SHOCKED that Dan Morgan is hurt.A partially torn Achilles' tendon sidelined the Crystalline Linebacker once again on Sunday. Rookie Jon Beason started, and has likely now taken the starting job on a permanent basis.

Update: 10/25: Morgan's Achilles' tendon forced him to miss practices Wednesday and Thursday, likely meaning that he will be sidelined yet again on Sunday.

Chicago Bears
Alex Brown (DE) 10/25: Defensive end Alex Brown ended up not participating in Thursday's practice with a reported back injury.
Tommie Harris (DT) 10/24: Defensive tackle Tommie Harris has been banged up most of the season, and sat out of Wednesday's practice. He did not look good as he made his way through the locker room, but he is expected to play on Sunday.

Update: 10/25: Harris returned to practice on Thursday.

Brandon McGowan (S) 10/22: Reserve safety Brandon McGowan hurt his elbow in the first half of Sunday's game, and did not return.

Update: 10/24: McGowan sat out of Wednesday's practice.

Update: 10/25: After missing Thursday's practice, McGowan said that his sprained elbow is "fine."

Darwin Walker (DT) From Last Week: Defensive tackle Darwin Walker was inactive Sunday after spraining his knee in week 5. Anthony Adams started at DT. He was able to practice a little last week, so don't expect him to be out much longer.

Update: 10/24: Walker practiced Wednesday with a brace on his knee.

Nathan Vasher (CB) From Last Week: Cornerback Nathan Vasher sat out Sunday night's game with a partially torn groin. He may be able to return soon, but it seems likely that he will miss one more and return after the Bears' week 9 bye.

Update: 10/24: Vasher was working out on the side during Wednesday practice - a step forward for him.

Update: 10/25: Vasher did some backpedaling on the side Thursday, but did not participate in the team's practice. He's getting closer, but it's hard to believe that he would be on the field this week.

Cincinnati Bengals
Willie Anderson (RT) From Last Week: A foot injury cost Willie Anderson his first game after 117 starts, but he returned to the field in week 7. Coach Marvin Lewis said Monday that Anderson banged his knee, but should be able to play.

Update: 10/24: Anderson sat out Wednesday's practice.

Update: 10/24b: After practice on Wednesday, the Bengals ruled Anderson OUT for Sunday's game against the Steelers.

Rudi Johnson (RB) From Last Week: Johnson was inactive Monday night with his hamstring injury, and Kenny Watson still got the start. Watson played well, making a bid for additional playing time when Rudi returns. On Monday, head coach Marvin Lewis indicated that Johnson may be able to return to practice.

Update: 10/24: Rudi Johnson was still not practicing on Wednesday.

Update: 10/25: Johnson was not seen at practice on Thursday.

Update: 10/26: On Friday, Rudi was able to do some warmups with the team, but he was in sweats and did not participate in the regular practice. Keep an eye on inactive lists, but don't hold your breath expecting a great performance against the Steelers this week - in part because he's hurt, and in part because he will be playing the Steelers, if he is active.

Update: 10/26: Johnson has been listed as doubtful for Sunday. He is very unlikely to play after missing practices all week.

Caleb Miller (LB)

From Last Week: Linebacker Caleb Miller's lower back injury landed him on the inactive list again on Sunday. On Monday, coach Marvin Lewis said that he thinks Miller has a chance to return to practice this week. Of course, he said that last week, too.

Update: 10/24: Miller may return to practice this week, but he didn't do it on Wednesday.

Update: 10/25: Miller was not practicing on Thursday.

Update: 10/26: Miller sat out Friday's practice.

Ahmad Brooks (LB) From Last Week: Brooks missed Sunday's game with a groin injury. In his Monday press conference, coach Marvin Lewis indicated that Brooks may be able to return to practice this week, but is the furthest away from working out than the other members of the Bengals' injury watch list.

Update: 10/24: Brooks was sidelined during practice on Wednesday.

Update: 10/24b: The Bengals listed Brooks as OUT for Sunday's game after Wednesday's practice session.

Update: 10/25: Brooks was not at practice Thursday.

Cleveland Browns
Jamal Lewis (RB) From Week 5: (The Browns Had A Bye In Week 7 - the following is the Week 6 Report) Jason Wright started Sunday with Jamal Lewis dealing with a sprained foot. Lewis should be fine following the Browns' week 7 bye.

Update: 10/18: Lewis told the Akron Beacon-Journal that he is confident he will play in week 8, following the Browns' bye this week.

Update: 10/26: Lewis has been limited in practice both Wednesday and Thursday.

Dallas Cowboys
Tony Romo (QB) From Last Week: Romo came out of last Sunday's game against the Patriots with a sore, strained left shoulder. This Sunday, he was hobbled momentarily by an apparent hamstring injury. He didn't miss any snaps, and now has a bye week to heal up.
Terry Glenn (WR) From Last Week: Glenn said that he planned to begin running last week, but would not commit to a timetable for his return to the playing field.
Anthony Henry (CB) From Last Week: Cornerback Anthony Henry suffered a right ankle injury in week 4, and has been out since. The Cowboys aren't sure when Henry will be able to return, but coach Phillips said Monday that Henry is rehabbing and might be available after the bye.
Bobby Carpenter (LB) From Last Week: Linebacker Bobby Carpenter is playing with a partially torn quadriceps tendon. If he tears is further, it will end his season.

Denver Broncos
Travis Henry (RB) 10/22: Running back Travis Henry sat out the fourth quarter of Sunday's win over the Steelers with a rib injury. On Monday, it was announced that he has bruised ribs and is sore, but did not suffer any fractures. Coach Shanahan said Monday that the team hopes it isn't serious, but "any time you're dealing with ribs you're never sure until you start practicing."

Update: 10/24: Henry sat out Wednesday's practice with bruised ribs. He has an extra day to recover before Monday night, so expect him to be on the field at gametime.

Update: 10/27: Henry has now missed three straight practices, and was limited for a fourth on Saturday. He is questionable for Monday night. There is an increasing likelihood that he won't be available Monday, meaning that Selvin Young would get the start.

Tony Scheffler (TE) 10/22: Tight end Tony Scheffler hurt his leg Sunday and was sore on Monday. Coach Mike Shanahan said that he would know more on Wednesday.

Update: 10/24: Scheffler fully participated in practice on Wednesday.

Dre Bly (CB) 10/22: Cornerback Dre Bly suffered a separated shoulder in the first quarter of Sunday's game. He did not come out of the game, although he was clearly hurting. Coach Shanahan said Monday that he isn't sure if Bly will need a shoulder harness to play against the Packers this week.

Update: 10/24: Bly fully participated in Wednesday's practice. He says that he is rehabbing his shoulder, and will be on the field Monday.

Champ Bailey (CB) From Last Week: Bailey was inactive Sunday with the lingering effects of his quadriceps injury. He was considered a game-time decision, and seems likely to be available for the Broncos' next game.

Update: 10/24: Bailey was in uniform for Wednesday's practice, but was limited.

Update: 10/27: Bailey missed several practices due to his quadriceps strain, and has been listed as questionable. On Saturday, Bailey reportedly fully participated in practice. He is a game-time decision for Monday night. If Bailey can't play, Domonique Foxworth would start.

Javon Walker (WR) From Last Week: Walker underwent surgery last Thursday to repair his right knee. He is expected to miss another six weeks. Coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday that Walker looked ready to go last Monday, but that his knee pain acted up on Thursday and the medical staff says that he needs to get it cleaned out. Walker had the knee surgically repaired two years ago.

Detroit Lions
Idrees Bashir (S) 10/22: Safety Idrees Bashir suffered a rib injury Sunday. He was undergoing tests on Monday.

Update: 10/25: Bashir did not practice on Thursday.

Green Bay Packers
Justin Harrell (DT) Rookie defensive tackle Justin Harrell had his leg rolled up on during Tuesday's practice session, and injured his ankle. He has been ruled out of Monday nights' game against the Broncos, and will likely miss another game or two.
Bubba Franks (TE) From Last Week: (The Packers Had A Bye In Week 7 - the following is the Week 6 Report) Shortly after the refs stole a touchdown from him by missing a clear pushout, tight end Bubba Franks came up lame and had to be taken to the locker room on a cart. On Monday, head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Franks suffered a knee injury and will miss at least a few weeks.

Update: 10/25: Franks has been ruled out for Monday night's game against the Broncos.

Cullen Jenkins (DE) From Last Week: (The Packers Had A Bye In Week 7 - the following is the Week 6 Report) Jenkins left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury. Coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that he does not believe it is serious, but that the medical staff wanted to do some more tests. The Packers have a week 7 bye.
Junius Coston (OL) From Last Week: (The Packers Had A Bye In Week 7 - the following is the Week 6 Report) Coston turned his ankle in practice on Thursday, and was inactive on Sunday. The Packers have a week 7 bye.
Vernand Morency (RB) From Last Week: (The Packers Had A Bye In Week 7 - the following is the Week 6 Report) Morency played Sunday, but carried the ball only 4 times and took a knee to the back that reportedly hurt his ribs. He did return to the game, but didn't do much. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that Morency might be limited in practices for the rest of the year. He should be able to play after the team's week 7 bye.
Scott Wells (C) From Last Week: (The Packers Had A Bye In Week 7 - the following is the Week 6 Report) Center Scott Wells was inactive Sunday with a fracture to the orbital bone around his eye.

Update: 10/24: Wells has indicated that he plans to start Monday night against the Denver Broncos after missing time due to a broken bone in his eye socket. Doctors cleared him to practice on Monday.

Update: 10/25: Wells fully participated in Thursday's practice.

Houston Texans
Matt Schaub (QB) 10/22: Quarterback Matt Schaub left Sunday's game early with ankle and hip injuries, the more serious of which seems to be the hip. All tests reportedly came back negative, and Schaub is considered day-to-day. Coach Gary Kubiak said that Schaub has a "real bad bruise" on the right hip.

Update: 10/24: Schaub practiced on a limited basis Wednesday. Sage Rosenfels still took most of the first-team snaps, and Schaub is still considered day-to-day.

Update: 10/25: Schaub did more Wednesday than the Texans expected, but he was clearly not ready to play in a game situation. There is still time for Schaub, who is still considered day-to-day, to get back up to speed, but it is increasingly likely that Sage Rosenfels starts on Sunday.

Update: 10/27: Schaub insists that he is ready to play Sunday against the Chargers, but it is up to coach Gary Kubiak whether he or Sage Rosenfels starts.

Andre Johnson (WR) From Last Week: Johnson's sprained knee cost him another game Sunday, but the team is hopeful that he will be ready to return soon, but it looks like he will likely miss at least another week. Don't expect him back before the Texans' week 10 bye.

Update: 10/25: On Thursday, head coach Gary Kubiak essentially ruled Johnson out for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers. He was able to do some work in practice, individual drills with the other receivers, but he is simply not quite ready to return to the field on gameday. A more likely target date is November 18th, following the Texans' bye week.

Indianapolis Colts
Marvin Harrison (WR) From Last Week: Harrison played, but did not look like himself. He was on the field only sparingly.

Update: 10/27: The Colts ruled Harrison OUT for Sunday's game against the Panthers. His knee is not yet fully up to speed, and the team needs to make sure he is able to return to his normal levels of performance for the remainder of the season.

Freddy Keiaho (LB) From Last Week: Keiaho played Monday against the Jaguars.

Update: 10/27: The Colts appear to be playing cautiously with Keiaho, likely to make sure he is able to play down the stretch. On Saturday, the Indy Star revealed that Keiaho has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Panthers.

Tony Ugoh (OL) 10/22: Right tackle Tony Ugoh sat out much of Monday night's game, apparently with a right foot injury. He also was wearing a neck roll in the game, but did not start with it. The exact nature of what is bothering him was unclear during the game.
Joseph Addai (RB) From Last Week: Running back Joseph Addai started Monday night, but appeared to be a touch hampered. He was relieved frequently by Kenten Keith.

Jacksonville Jaguars
Maurice Jones-Drew (RB) 10/22: Running back Maurice Jones-Drew left Monday night's game against the Colts late with a sprained left knee.

Update: 10/27: MJD says that he intends to play (he's listed as questionable), but with a sprained MCL that forced him to miss a significant amount of practice time this week, if he is on the field at all it will likely be somewhat limited.

David Garrard (QB) 10/22: Quarterback David Garrard was sidelined temporarily in the second quarter with an ankle injury. He left briefly to get the ankle taped and played some before halftime, but did not return to the playing field. Quinn Gray played with Garrard sidelined. After the game, coach Jack Del Rio said that Garrard is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks with a severely sprained ankle.

Update: 10/24: Garrard is expected to miss as much as a month with a badly sprained ankle. Quinn Gray will start while Garrard is sidelined, and the Jaguars have worked out several quarterbacks, including Drew Henson and Todd Bouman.

Update: 10/25: The Jaguars signed Todd Bouman.

Josh Scobee (K) From Last Week: Scobee's quadriceps strain prevented him from playing again in week 7. John Carney continues to play in Scobee's place.

Kansas City Chiefs
Kyle Turley (OL) From Last Week: Offensive tackle Kyle Turley sat out Sunday's game with an ankle injury - his second missed game in a row. Chris Terry started in Turley's place.
Eddie Kennison (WR) From Last Week: Kennison aggravated his hamstring in week 5, and sat out the last two weeks.

Miami Dolphins
Keith Traylor (DT) 10/25: Defensive tackle Keith Traylor missed practices both Wednesday and Thursday with an undisclosed illness. Normally, we wouldn't consider a mid-week illness to be something that should concern anyone, but with the Dolphins flying to England to play the Giants in London, it is possible that an illness could hamper Traylor, possibly even make him miss the game. It's worth noting that other players, such as the Ravens' Samari Rolle, have missed multiple games due to various illnesses.
Zach Thomas (LB) 10/24: After Sunday's loss to the New England Patriots, linebacker Zach Thomas was involved in an accident on the freeway that was initially reported to have caused no injuries. On Wednesday, however, Thomas was absent from practice and reports surfaced that he suffered head/neck (whiplash) injuries and was in Pittsburgh visiting a specialist. With his history of concussions, there is concern that Thomas will need some time to recover. Thomas is NOT expected to play Sunday against the Giants in London, England.

Update: 10/25: Thomas has been advised by specialists that he should sit out Sunday's game. He was not at Thursday's practice.

David Martin (TE) 10/24: A strained groin forced Dolphins' tight end David Martin to sit out Wednesday's practice. Justin Peelle worked out as the starter in practice, and Aaron Halterman was promoted from the practice squad, an indication that there is a chance Martin will sit out Sunday's game against the Giants in London, England.

Update: 10/25: Martin missed practice again on Thursday.

Update: 10/27: Martin has been ruled OUT of Sunday's game against the Giants.

Ronnie Brown (RB) 10/22: The Miami Dolphins lost their best player Sunday when running back Ronnie Brown suffered a season-ending knee injury. Brown tore the ACL in his right knee while trying to tackle the Patriots' Randall Gay on an interception return. Jesse Chatman is expected to take over as the starting running back.
Renaldo Hill (S) 10/22: Starting safety Renaldo Hill will miss the remainder of the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee. Jason Allen will replace Hill.
Travares Tillman (S) From Last Week: Safety Travares Tillman underwent knee surgery during week 5. He has been out since, and is considered to be out indefinitely.
Vonnie Holliday (DT) From Last Week: Defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday, as expected, missed Sunday's game after suffering a fracture in his lower right leg in week 4. Coach Cam Cameron called it a "slight fracture" and noted that it should not affect the defensive tackle long-term.

Update: 10/24: Holliday is still recovering from his fractured ankle and has not yet been cleared to practice with the team.

Minnesota Vikings
Chester Taylor (RB) 10/24: Adrian Peterson owners all across the country got all excited Wednesday when the Vikings listed Chester Taylor on the injury report with a groin injury. There has been no word on the injury from the Vikings outside of his listing as having been limited in practice.

Update: 10/25: Taylor returned to practice Thursday. The injury has been termed "nothing serious."

Update: 10/26: Taylor is probable for Sunday.

Tarvaris Jackson (QB) 10/22: Vikings' starting quarterback topped off an impressive 6/19, 72-yard performance against the Cowboys with a broken index finger. A tendon or muscle reportedly tore a small piece of bone off the index finger on his throwing hand. If he is able to play, head coach Brad Childress said Monday that Jackson will start over Kelly Holcomb.

Update: 10/24: As of Wednesday, the Star-Tribune indicates that Holcomb is currently expected to start due to Jackson's fractured finger. Nothing official, or even an official hint has been given, and Jackson was listed Wednesday as having limited participation in practice.

Update: 10/25: Holcomb is still expected to start Sunday's game.

Update: 10/26: The Vikings listed Jackson as questionable for Sunday. Coach Brad Childress said Friday that Jackson will either start, or be third on the depth chart. Don't expect him to start...

Dwight Smith (S) From Last Week: Defensive back Dwight Smith sat out Sunday's loss with a lingering hamstring injury. His status for week 8 is uncertain, with coach Brad Childress saying that Smith isn't going to be rushed back.

Update: 10/25: It looks like Dwight Smith will miss another game Sunday, after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday practices.

Update: 10/26: The Vikings ruled Smith out for Sunday's game.

New England Patriots
Sammy Morris (RB) From Last Week: Morris sat out Sunday's game with a chest injury, which seems likely to hamper him even after the Patriots' week 8 bye. Maroney returned, but was largely ineffective.
Benjamin Watson (TE) From Last Week: The Patriots lost tight end Benjamin Watson to an ankle injury, and he was unable to play on Sunday. Kyle Brady started in Watson's place..
Laurence Maroney (RB) From Last Week: Maroney started on Sunday, but carried the ball only 6 times for a whopping 31 yards, despite the Patriots' putting the game away very early. Kevin Faulk and Kyle Eckel also had 6 carries each, and Heath Evans had 4. Does it sound like Maroney is healthy, based on that distribution? Fortunately, he has a bye week to work on getting back up to speed.

New Orleans Saints
Jeff Faine (C) 10/22: Center Jeff Faine left Sunday's win over the Falcons with a pectoral injury. On Monday, coach Sean Payton would not discuss the severity of Faine's injury, indicating that he will announce more on Wednesday. He noted that the team is optimistic.

Update: 10/25: Faine sat out Wednesday's practice, and it appears that he is a long-shot to play on Sunday. Jonathan Goodwin will start if Faine is sidelined.

Update: 10/26: Faine has been ruled out for Sunday's game. Goodwin will start in his place.

Robert Meachem (WR) From Last Week: Meachem is improving from offseason knee surgery, but is "still a ways away" from returning.
Jason David (CB) From Last Week: Saints' starting cornerback Jason David is sat out again Sunday, but is getting closer to his return from a fractured left forearm. When, exactly, he returns is uncertain.

Update: 10/25: David is participating in practices, and is expected to be available on Sunday. It is uncertain whether or not he will start ahead of Jason Craft.

New York Giants
James Butler (S) 10/23: Butler was initially reported with a mild hamstring injury, which Tom Coughlin later said was moderate. On Tuesday, Butler missed practice, but it is being reported that his ankle seems to be bothering him more than his hamstring.
Derrick Ward (RB) From Last Week: Running back Derrick Ward has been dealing with an ankle injury, but was able to play on Sunday.

Update: 10/23: Ward sat out Tuesday. His ankle is reportedly worse than it has been, although he should be able to play this week in London against the Dolphins.

Brandon Jacobs (RB) From Last Week: Running back Brandon Jacobs is dealing with an ankle injury. He says that he will be able to push through it. Head coach Tom Coughlin said Monday that Jacobs came through Sunday's game no worse than he was last week.
Derrick Ward (RB) From Last Week: Running back Derrick Ward has been banged up for a couple of weeks, now working through an ankle injury. He should be able to play.
Steve Smith (WR) From Last Week: Receiver Steve Smith's shoulder has healed enough for him to put on the pads and begin practicing. He was on the field for practices last week, but was unable to play on Sunday.

Update: 10/26: Smith appears unlikely to play Sunday against the Dolphins. His shoulder is sore, and at some point this week he pulled a hamstring.

Plaxico Burress (WR) From Last Week: Burress has a badly sprained ankle, but is playing through the pain. He should not miss much, if any, game time. However, don't expect him to fully participate in many practices.

New York Jets
Jonathan Vilma (LB) 10/24: The Jets have taken a page from Bill Belichick's playbook this year by refusing to even humor most discussion of injuries and player status. However, on Tuesday, head coach Eric Mangini mentioned that linebacker Jonathan Vilma is dealing with an injury that "dramatically affected" his performance. Details, naturally, were not forthcoming. Mangini added that Vilma will just have to work through it. The linebacker started the second half of Sunday's game on the sidelines. He is expected to play.

Update: 10/24: Vilma said on his radio show that he is upset about being benched in the second half, and that it was NOT because he was injured. The soap opera just keeps getting more interesting, though, because on Wednesday head coach Eric Mangini said that Vilma would not practice and was having additional tests done on his knee. The next 24-48 hours promise to be very -- dramatic.

Update: 10/24b: The Daily News reports that Vilma's year may be over with a "significant" knee injury. The exact nature of the injury and prognosis has not been released, but the use of the word "significant" has been interpreted as meaning Vilma likely needs surgery and will miss the remainder of the season. It's rife with speculation, but Vilma did undergo an MRI on Monday and has since undergone more tests. Rookie David Harris is slated to start with Vilma sidelined.

Update: 10/25: Coach Eric Mangini continued to not discuss anything at all worth mentioning, except to say that Vilma would not practice again on Thursday. More reports are surfacing that confirm the "significant" knee injury appears likely to sideline Vilma for a while, possibly the remainder of the season.

Update: 10/27: Vilma was placed on injured reserve Saturday. The exact nature of the injury has still not been revealed, but Vilma is expected to make a full recovery and is reportedly currently seeking medical opinions on whether or not to undergo surgery to repair the damage.

Chris Baker (TE) From Last Week: The New York Jets on Saturday ruled tight end Chris Baker OUT of Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals due to a back injury. It is unclear how long he might be sidelined. The Jets, much like the Patriots, will not clearly discuss injuries.

Update: 10/25: Baker practiced on a limited basis Thursday.

Sam Williams (LB) From Last Week: Linebacker Sam Williams was inactive Sunday with a shoulder injury that he suffered three weeks earlier.
Gerard Warren (DT) From Last Week: Warren is getting closer to returning from his thigh injury, but was inactive again on Sunday.
Josh McCown (QB)

From Last Week: McCown was simply not ready to play Sunday, but with Daunte Culpepper playing remarkably uninspired football since the Miami game, once McCown is healthy enough to play, he just might be handed the starting job. It's also possible that the team decides to try rookie JaMarcus Russell at some point before the end of the season. In any event, McCown probably won't be ready to play for a few more weeks.

Update: 10/23: I take it back. McCown is reportedly hopeful that he will be able to practice on Wednesday, and might be ready to play Sunday. Coach Lane Kiffin would not say whether or not McCown would start if he is able to play.

Update: 10/24: McCown did some individual work before practice on Wednesday, and did not show any signs of being slowed by his injuries.

Update: 10/24: Dawkins was expected to practice on Wednesday. Coach Andy Reid said that Dawkins is improving, but is not yet back to 100%.

Update: 10/24b: Dawkins ended up not practicing Wednesday, although it was ostensibly for "personal reasons."

Update: 10/25: Dawkins practiced on Thursday, but ran primarily with the scout team. Coach Andy Reid said that Dawkins will work with the scout team until the medical staff is comfortable with allowing him to rejoin the first team defense.

Update: 10/26: Dawkins fully participated in practice Friday, but is considered doubtful to play.

Pittsburgh Steelers
Ryan Clark (S) 10/23: Steelers' safety Ryan Clark did not return to Pittsburgh with the rest of his team after their loss at Denver because he was hospitalized with an inflamed spleen. Vincent Jackson (WR) From Last Week: (The Chargers Had A Bye In Week 7 - the following is the Week 6 Report) A shoulder injury limited Jackson in practice last week, but did not prevent hum from starting against the Raiders. However, he was essentially ineffective.

Update: 10/24: Smith tested his shoulder on Tuesday, and hoped to rejoin his team on Wednesday. Coach Mike Nolan said that the team will ease Smith back into things. He has a chance to start on Sunday. If Smith isn't ready to go, Trent Dilfer is no longer a shoe-in to start. Shaun Hill will get a look during the week, and may get the nod if Smith does not go.

Update: 10/24b: Smith made it through practice Wednesday and made all of the throws he had to make. The 49ers haven't yet committed to him, but it looks like Smith will be the starter come Sunday.

Update: 10/25: 49ers' head coach Mike Nolan said Thursday that Alex Smith will start at quarterback on Sunday.

A-C Joint – An abbreviation for the Acromioclavicular joint, the A-C is the joint of the shoulder where the acromion process (of the scapula) and the distal end of the clavicle meet. The acromion is the upper-most part of the shoulder just above where there ball of the humerus meets the shoulder socket. Most shoulder separations occur at this point.

Avulsion Fracture - An avulsion fracture occurs when an injury causes a ligament or tendon to pull off a small piece of bone. This type of injury is often associated with an injury to the ligament or tendon itself. Avulsion fractures can cause intense pain, but rarely requires surgery to reattach the ligament or tendon, except in cases when a large portion of bone has been widely separated, or in the event of serious tendon or ligament damage. An avulsion fracture will normally heal on its own and will typically not cause any problems afterwards, although it may still be visible on an X-Ray.

Bruised Sternum – The sternum is often called the “breastbone”. It is the flat bone in the center of the chest that connects the first 7 sets of ribs and the clavicles. A bruised sternum can create intense pain with any movement, including throwing or even breathing. A significant injury to the sternum can also put pressure on the lungs and heart.

Collateral Ligament Injuries
MCL (Medial) and LCL (Lateral) Collateral Ligament Injuries - The collateral ligaments are located on the sides of the knee joint, with the MCL located on the inner side, and the LCL on the outer. They provide stabilization, especially for side-to-side motion. The LCL is very rarely injured, but the MCL can be damaged with relative ease. A hit to the outside of the knee while the lower leg is stationary can cause an injury. Surgery is generally required only in the case of a complete tear. Otherwise, rest, ice, compression, and elevation are considered the best means to recovery.

Cruciate Ligament Injuries
ACL (Anterior) and PCL (Posterior) Cruciate Ligament Injuries – The knee contains two cruciate ligaments and two collateral. The cruciate ligaments, called “cruciate” because they form a cross inside the knee, are the ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, and PCL, or posterior cruciate ligament. The ACL is located toward the front and prevents the shin bone from sliding forward beneath the thigh bone. A tear of the ACL typically requires reconstructive surgery. The PCL is injured much less frequently than the ACL, and an athlete can often return to action quickly with rehabilitation.

Concussion – A concussion is typically caused by some sort of severe head trauma. The brain will often be moved violently against the skull, creating a reaction similar to a seizure. The short term result of a concussion may include some bleeding on the brain, fluid drainage from the ears, nose, or mouth, vomiting, confusion and dizziness, and unconsciousness. A concussion will also often include some short-term memory loss, usually of events immediately before and after the event. For the long term, a concussion may cause persistent dizziness, confusion, and a greater likelihood to suffer additional concussions. In addition, repeated or excessively severe brain injuries can cause permanent brain damage and memory loss.

Deltoid Ligament - The deltoid ligament is a strong, flat, triangular band that attaches the medial, or inside, portion of the ankle to the foot. The deltoid ligament is covered by several tendons.

Hamstring Injuries – The hamstring is a series of long muscles that run down the back of the thigh. These muscles help control both hip and knee movement and are critical to running or even walking. Hamstring injuries will often be a relatively minor pull or strain, which typically take a week or two of rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to heal. More severe injuries can linger for 6 to 8 weeks, and a serious tear may require season-ending surgery. Hamstring injuries are particularly tricky because even minor pulls tend to linger and have been known to hamper an athlete for the entire season. This is because the hamstring is so commonly used and is involved with both the hip and the knee that it is extremely difficult for an athlete to give it proper treatment before returning to action.

Hip Flexor – The hip flexor is actually a muscle that helps the hip to bend forward. When an injury is referred to as a “hip flexor,” the player typically suffered a strain to the hip flexor muscle.

Hip Pointer – A hip pointer occurs when an athlete suffers an injury to the pelvis, specifically the iliac crest, caused by a direct blow to the area. The iliac crest is the bony portion of the pelvis, commonly called the “hip bone,” that can be felt along the waistline. While the term “hip pointer” usually refers to a bruise to either the bone or muscle, it can also be applied to more serious injuries such as a small chip or fracture, or a complete break. Typically, a player noted as having a hip pointer suffered a bruise to the crest that can be painful and limit mobility for a relatively short period of time.

Hyperextension - Extreme extension, or straightening, of a limb or body part.

Pectoral Muscle Tear – The pectoral muscle connects the ribs, clavicle, and upper arm with a large mass of muscle, commonly known as the chest. As it is instrumental to everything from moving the arm to turning the head, to simply breathing, a tear or rupture in this muscle mass will often result in a player being placed on injured reserve. A pectoral injury can take at least three or four months to heal.

Plantar Fascia Injuries – The Plantar Fascia is a thick, broad, inelastic band of fibrous material that attaches to the heel and fans out along the bottom of the foot to attach to the metatarsal bones around the ball of the foot. It is inelastic and typically drawn quite tight to maintain the foot’s arch. While an injury can occur anywhere on the plantar fascia, most are localized around point where it meets the heel and involve some amount of tearing.

Sprain – A sprain is a ligament injury that can cause pain, swelling, and bruising of a joint. While it is more common to sprain a knee, wrist, or ankle, a player can sprain other joints as well, including the foot, back, chest, etc... Sprains can often linger for several weeks and vary in severity from relatively mild, which will cause some manageable pain, to severe, which will create enough pain and swelling to limit mobility and keep a player out of a game. Certain positions are more limited by sprains than others. In the case of a wide receiver, a mid-foot sprain can be debilitating due to the sprinting and cutting the player must perform.

Stinger – A stinger, sometimes called a burner or pinched nerve, is an injury to the nerves of the neck or shoulder. The term “stinger” refers primarily to the symptoms an athlete experiences that include painful electrical sensations through one of the arms. Technically, a stinger is usually a spine injury, but never a spinal cord injury. As it does not involve damage to the spinal cord, paralysis is not a serious concern. While symptoms will often fade on their own, stingers do tend to recur and can result in persistent pain and weakness in the arm, which can result in lost playing time. A stinger can occur when a nerve is compressed by the head being forced backward and toward one side, or when the nerves in the neck and shoulder are over-stretched by the head being forced sideways.

Strain – A strain occurs when a muscle is overstretched and tears. Also called a “pulled muscle,” this type of injury, while painful, is fairly common. Unlike a complete muscle tear, in which the entire muscle group will often completely separate, a player can often play despite a strain. More severe strains, and strains of important muscle groups, can hold a player out until the injury heals. Surgery is not a serious consideration to repair a strain.

Turf Toe – Turf Toe is an injury, perhaps a bruise or sprain, to the joint that connects the big toe to the rest of the foot. The injury is usually caused by severe or excessive upward bending or hyperextension of the big toe. Common symptoms are pain, swelling, and tenderness, and severe cases will often cause restriction of motion and bruising. Surgery is very rare, but the healing process can be lengthy. A turf toe injury will often bother an athlete all season, but will not end his year.
