Jets Sign TE Keller To Multi-Year Deal

ImageThe Jets signed TE Dustin Keller, the #30 pick, to a multi-year deal on Friday.

Keller will have to battle vets Chris Baker and Bubba Franks, plus several other players to get much playing time in 2008. The good news is that none of them are very good.

Ravens Sign QB Flacco
ImageThe Baltimore Ravens and Joe Flacco, the team's first-round draft pick, agreed in principle Wednesday night to a five-year deal expected to reach $30 million.

Flacco, the former University of Delaware standout, is expected to earn over $30 million which includes a guaranteed money of $8.75 million, according to his agent, Joe Linta.

This is good news for the young signal caller if he has any chance of starting in week 1. He is still a longshot sure, but they didn't move back up in the first to get him for nothing.

Cowboys Sign FS Hamlin To 6-Year Deal

ImageThe Dallas Cowboys have signed FS Ken Hamlin to a new 6-year contract worth $39 million, including $15 million guaranteed.

Hamlin had his finest season as a pro in 2007, including his first trip to the Pro Bowl. This really locks up a good secondary for Dallas for the long term, especially if Adam Jones actually gets to play AND keep his nose clean.

Bears Agree With RB Jones For 1-Year Deal

ImageThe Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with FA RB Kevin Jones on a 1-year, $605, 000 contract according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network.

Well this definitely puts a little hesitation in drafting Matt Forte now. Forte is still the future, but Jones plays almost the same type of game as Forte, so this will almost certainly means he splits carries, a t the elast, with Jones for 2008.

Colts QB Manning To Miss 4-6 Weeks

ImageColts QB Peyton Manning will miss 4-6 weeks after having a bursa sac removed from his left knee. That timetable means he would miss at least the start of training camp. The Colts open camp on July 25 and break camp on Aug. 15.

"The procedure was routine. The Colts' medical staff expects a full and complete return to action," said Colts president Bill Polian.

He will most likely miss a good portion of training camp, but if anyone can get away with missing some time, Peyton is that guy. This is nothing to be concerned about, Manning is still the #2 QB in fantasy circles.

RB Henry Fails Another Drug Test
ImageFormer Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry has tested positive for marijuana again, reports Fox 31 Sports in Colorado.

An NFL source told the television station late Thursday about the positive test and said Henry likely would be suspended for a year for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

This is the second time that he faces a 1-year suspension for drugs. He beat the last one on a technicality, but you can bet the league covered their bases on this one. If he is indeed suspended for a year, it may be his death knell in the NFL.

Jaguars WR Jones Arrested
ImageJacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones was arrested early Thursday morning in his former college town and charged with felony possession of cocaine. Jones, 25, and two other men were arrested just before 1:00 a.m. on Thursday after police said they observed Jones cutting up cocaine with a credit card in a car.

A first-round draft pick by the Jaguars in 2005, Jones has been a disappointment as a wide receiver in the NFL. The 6-foot-6, 238-pound wideout had 24 catches for 317 yards and four touchdowns last season, and has 101 catches for 1,392 yards and 13 scores in three seasons with Jacksonville.

Just another player with loads of talent that couldn't control themselves. The writing was on the wall that the team would cut him before this, now it just becomes when.

Ex-NFL Player Kiel Killed In Car Crash
ImageEx-San Diego Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was killed in a car smash, police said Saturday. He was 27.

San Diego police said Kiel's body was thrown from his 2004 Chevrolet sedan, which crashed into a wall.

Kiel, who was driving alone after leaving a party, was conscious when paramedics arrived at the crash. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

A 2003 second-round National Football League entry draft selection, Kiel appeared in 59 games over parts of four seasons with the Chargers.

Browns' WR Jurevicius Undergoes 2nd Knee Surgery

Cleveland Browns' wide receiver Joe Jurevicius underwent a second knee surgery this week after experiencing discomfort and swelling in the surgically-repaired joint.

No determination has been regarding Jurevicius' availability for the start of training camp.

Chargers Sign RB Thomas, T Clark
Image The San Diego Chargers on Tuesday signed two of their 2008 draft picks, running back Marcus Thomas and tackle Corey Clark, to four-year contracts.

A fifth-round selection, Thomas rushed for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior at Texas-El Paso.

Clark, who was taken in the seventh round, was a two-year starter at Texas A&M.

Thomas is a pounding back and could easily surprise Fantasy owners in 2008. There is a chance he will get a shot to be the goal line back. Keep your eye on him to see how the Chargers use him during training camp.

    Chris Brown (RB, TEN)
    Vince Young (QB, TEN)

    Injury Watch

    Arizona Cardinals
Adrian Wilson (S) 10/19: The Cardinals listed safety Adrian Wilson as questionable for Sunday's game with a hamstring injury. he has not missed a game since 2002, so expect him to play. Antrel Rolle may get the nod if Wilson is sidelined.
Kurt Warner (QB) 10/15: The Cardinals lost their second quarterback in as many weeks Sunday when Kurt Warner left with an elbow injury. Warner said Sunday night that he has torn ligaments in the left elbow (non-throwing), but hopes that he will be able to return in a few weeks. He underwent an MRI on Monday, and while the results are not yet known, he has ruled himself out of week 7's game. Tim Rattay will start.

Update: 10/16: An MRI confirmed that Warner tore some ligaments in his left elbow, but he is reportedly going to try to practice on Wednesday and see how well he can grip the ball. If he can hold on well enough to hand off during the game, he can theoretically play with a brace on his arm. It may be slightly premature to rule him out, but the safer bet is likely on the Cardinals resting him this week and over the bye to attempt to return in week 9.

Update: 10/17: Warner has been told that playing will not cause additional damage, and he was on the practice field Wednesday despite considerable swelling. He experimented with some different wraps and braces in an effort to find a way to stabilize the elbow so that he can play. Warner plans to practice throughout the week to see if he can play on Sunday. Chances are that he will sit out this game.

Update: 10/19: After practicing on Thursday, Warner is optimistic that he will be able to play on Sunday at Washington.

Update: 10/19: Warner said after Friday's practice that he didn't feel as good as he did on Thursday. He is questionable for the game, and is considered a game-time decision.

Karlos Dansby (LB) 10/15: Linebacker Karlos Dansby says that he is hopeful his sprained knee is no more than a sprained MCL, which will sideline him a couple of weeks. The best case scenario for Dansby seems to be that he will be out for a couple of games.

10/17: Dansby is likely to miss three-to-four weeks with his sprained knee.

Aaron Francisco (S) 10/15: Reserve safety Aaron Francisco has a tear in his MCL, and is expected to miss three or four weeks. The injury occurred on the last defensive play of the game.
Levi Brown (OT) From Week 5 : Offensive tackle Levi Brown has an ankle injury. There was no significant damage on his MRI, but Brown sat out Sunday for the second week in a row.

Update: 10/17: Brown participated in part of Wednesday's practice, and said that he feels better than he did at this time last week.

Anquan Boldin (WR) From Week 5: Boldin was held out of Sunday's game once again with a hip injury. He is expected to return to the field in week 7.

Update: 10/18: Boldin would not say that he is 100%, but did acknowledge that he will be playing this week.

    Atlanta Falcons
Alge Crumpler (TE) 10/19: The Falcons listed tight end Alge Crumpler as doubtful for Sunday's game due to knee and ankle injuries. Dwayne Blakley and rookie Martrez Milner are Crumpler's backups. Keep an eye on rookie Milner...
Todd Weiner (OL) From Week 5 : Starting right tackle Todd Weiner underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee last Wednesday, and will miss two-to-six weeks. Second-year player Tyson Clabo is expected to start at right tackle.

    Baltimore Ravens
Ray Lewis (LB) 10/19: Lewis is considered a gametime decision for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills.
Willis McGahee (RB) 10/17: Wednesday morning, running back Willis McGahee complained that he was "beat up" in Sunday's game, and was extremely sore. He said that he is looking forward to getting treatment on Thursday. McGahee sat out of practice Wednesday, but there is virtually NO chance he misses this week's game against his old team, the Buffalo Bills.

Update: 10/18: McGahee returned to full practice on Thursday.

Chris McAlister (CB) 10/15: On Monday, head coach Brian Billick revealed that cornerback Chris McAlister "tweaked" his knee and is considered a day-to-day decision.

Update: 10/16: Head coach Chris McAlister said Tuesday that McAlister is considered doubtful for Sunday's game at the Buffalo Bills, but indicated that he should be able to play November 5th against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Update: 10/17: McAlister says that the team informed him that he will likely be sidelined three weeks due to his strained knee. He hopes to return by November 5th to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Update: 10/18: A Baltimore radio station reported that McAlister will be out up to six weeks, but that's news to the Ravens, coach Brian Billick, and McAlister himself. They are still targeting November 5th against the Steelers, and have listed him as doubtful for this week. Samari Rolle and Corey Ivy are expected to start.

Steve McNair (QB) From Week 5: Steve McNair is now dealing with both his groin, which has bothered him for several weeks now, and a sore back. He is expected to sit out week 7, giving the start to Kyle Boller.

Update: 10/18: McNair missed practice both Wednesday and Thursday. He is still not expected to play.

Mike Flynn (C) From Week 5: Center Mike Flynn suffered a right knee injury that forced him to miss Sunday's game. On Monday, coach Billick said that Flynn's return is "very likely" this week.

Update: 10/18: Flynn was at Thursday's practice, but was limited.

Adam Terry (LT) From Week 5: Left tackle Adam Terry is reportedly progressing well from a sprained left ankle, but on Monday coach Brian Billick said that he isn't sure if Terry will be able to play this week.

Update: 10/18: Terry practiced on a limited basis Thursday.

Todd Heap (TE) From Week 5: Tight end Todd Heap has a hamstring injury that head coach Brian Billick said he hopes will be feeling well enough by the end of the week that Heap might play against the Bills. Quite frankly, that's hardly a ringing endorsement. If you're counting on Heap, start making plans to start someone else.

Update: 10/18: Heap missed practice both Wednesday and Thursday.

Update: 10/19: The Ravens listed Heap as doubtful on Friday. Make other plans...

Dan Cody (LB) From Week 5: Dan Cody will not be activated from the PUP list after suffering a leg injury.
Jonathan Ogden (OT) From Week 5: Ogden's turf toe forced him to miss another game Sunday, and coach Billick said Monday that the team is starting to work on a contingency plan in case Ogden is unable to play at all this year. Ogden is expected to miss another game this week against the Bills.

Update: 10/18: Ogden practiced Thursday, and there has been speculation by Ravens beat writers that coach Brian Billick mentioned a possible trip to injured reserve in an effort to "motivate" Ogden to get back on the field.

    Buffalo Bills
Sam Aiken (WR) 10/19: Receiver Sam Aiken has been held out of practice this week with a hamstring injury. He was around on Friday, but did not do much, prompting the Bills to list him as doubtful for Sunday's game. With Peerless Price slated to go on IR on Friday, it seems likely that the Bills will grab a receiver in the short term.
Brad Butler (OL) From Week 5: (The Bills Had A Week 6 Bye) A hip injury sidelined offensive guard Brad Butler early in last Monday night's game against the Cowboys. On Monday, he was able to return to practice.

Update: 10/17: Butler practiced fully on Wednesday.

Ashton Youboty (CB) From Week 5: (The Bills Had A Week 6 Bye) Youboty sat out last Monday night's game against the Cowboys with an ankle injury. He appears ready to return to action following the bye week.

Update: 10/17: Youboty was limited in practice on Wednesday due to his sprained ankle. He was on the field, though, and should be able to play this

Update: 10/18: Jabari Green seems to have taken the starting job from Youboty while he was sidelined. Head coach Dick Jauron indicated that Greer will remain the starter, even after Youboty returns to health.

Update: 10/19: The Bills listed Youboty as doubtful for Sunday's game.

Jim Leonhard (S) From Week 5: (The Bills Had A Week 6 Bye) Safety Jim Leonhard missed last Monday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys due to a calf injury. On Monday following the bye, he missed practice.

Update: 10/17: Leonhard has been declared out for Sunday's game./td>

J.P. Losman (QB) From Week 5 : (The Bills Had A Week 6 Bye) Quarterback J.P. Losman suffered a sprained knee in week 3 and sat out Monday night's game against the Cowboys. Trent Edwards has filled in very well with Losman out. As of Monday following the bye week, head coach Dick Jauron refused to name a starting quarterback for week 7. Receiver Lee Evans has endorsed Losman, but says that the team should stick with whichever one is chosen to start. In any event, Losman appears healthy enough to play.

Update: 10/17: Losman fully participated in practice Wednesday, although Edwards has been named the starter.

Coy Wire (LB) From Week 5: (The Bills Had A Week 6 Bye) Wire appears to be ready to return after hurting his knee in week 1. <

Update: 10/17: Wire fully participated in Wednesday's practice session./td>

    Carolina Panthers
David Carr (QB) From Week 5: Quarterback David Carr suffered a back injury last Sunday that forced him from the game temporarily. He appeared healthy enough to start in week 6, but his back tightened up on him during the flight to the west coast and he ended up sidelined while Vinny Testaverde started. Testaverde is not a threat to take the starting job on a long-term basis, so look for Carr to start in week 8 following the Panthers' bye.
Nick Goings (RB) From Week 5: Goings sat out Sunday's game with a concussion. It was the second game that Goings has missed. He should be okay following the bye week.

Update: 10/18: Goings is targeting the October 28th game against the Indianapolis Colts to return.

    Dan Morgan (LB)

From Week 5: We're SHOCKED that Dan Morgan is hurt.A partially torn Achilles' tendon sidelined the Crystalline Linebacker once again on Sunday. Rookie Jon Beason started, and has likely now taken the starting job on a permanent basis.

    Chicago Bears
Tommie Harris (DT) 10/17: Harris has been dealing with hamstring and knee injuries for a few weeks now. He played Sunday, but said after the game that he's not fully healthy, and on Wednesday he sat out of practice.
Ruben Brown (OG) 10/15: Guard Ruben Brown left in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game after aggravating a shoulder injury.
Bernard Berrian (WR) From Week 5: Wide receiver Bernard Berrian has been dealing with a toe injury, and did not finish Sunday's loss to the Vikings. He did score a touchdown, and will likely be available to play in week 7.
Darwin Walker (DT) From Week 5: Defensive tackle Darwin Walker was inactive Sunday after spraining his knee in week 5. Anthony Adams started at DT.

Update: 10/17: Walker practiced Wednesday on a limited basis. He would not say that he's going to play Sunday, but the Bears are going up against Walker's former team, the Eagles, and it seems unlikely that he would miss it.

John Tait (OT) From Week 4 : John Tait has a high ankle sprain, but toughed it out and played Sunday.
Nathan Vasher (CB) From Week 4 : Cornerback Nathan Vasher sat out Sunday night's game with a partially torn groin. He may be able to return soon, but it seems likely that he will miss another game before returning. The Bears have a week 9 bye.

Update: 10/17: Vasher was "playing catch" during practice, which is an improvement over the last several weeks, but he was not participating in Wednesday's session.

    Cincinnati Bengals
Willie Anderson (RT) From Week 5: A foot injury cost Willie Anderson his first game after 117 starts, and appears likely to miss a second game this week.

Update: 10/17: Anderson was on the field practicing on Wednesday.

Update: 10/18: On Thursday, Anderson was once again on the practice field. It looks like he will likely be available for Sunday.

Rudi Johnson (RB) From Week 5: Johnson was active Monday night despite a hamstring injury, but Kenny Watson still got the start. Rudi carried the ball just 4 times to Watson's 13.

Update: 10/18: Rudi is making fantasy owners everywhere nervous by standing around in sweats watching practices. Don't lose any hair just yet - he will most likely play, but it's understandably disconcerting.

Update: 10/19: On Friday, the Bengals listed Johnson as doubtful to play Sunday. He did not practice, and no longer looks like he will be ramping back up into the featured role this week. Play it safe and let his hammy heal...

    Caleb Miller (LB)

From Week 5: Linebacker Caleb Miller's lower back injury landed him on the inactive list for Sunday. On Monday, coach Marvin Lewis said that he thinks Miller has a chance to return to practice this week.

Update: 10/17: Miller sat out of Wednesday's practice.

Update: 10/18: MIA again on Thursday.

Update: 10/19: Miller has been ruled out for Sunday's game.

Ahmad Brooks (LB) From Week 5: Brooks missed Sunday's game with a groin injury. In his Monday press conference, coach Marvin Lewis indicated that Brooks will have to be evaluated during the week.

Update: 10/17: Brooks missed practice Wednesday.

Update: 10/18: Sitting out again on Thursday.

Update: 10/19: Brooks has been ruled out for Sunday's game.

Tab Perry (WR) FromWeek 5: Perry's hamstring forced him to miss week 6 's game, and he will most likely not be available for week 7, either.

Update: 10/17: Perry was placed on injured reserve, ending his season. He underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair his troublesome hip. Coach Marvin Lewis believes that Perry will be able to play football again.

    Cleveland Browns
Jamal Lewis (RB) From Week 5: Jason Wright started Sunday with Jamal Lewis dealing with a sprained foot. Lewis should be fine following the Browns' week 7 bye.

Update: 10/18: Lewis told the Akron Beacon-Journal that he is confident he will play in week 8, following the Browns' bye this week.

    Dallas Cowboys
Tony Romo (QB) 10/15: Romo came out of Sunday's game against the Patriots with a sore, strained left shoulder. He said that he isn't sure if he will get an MRI on it, but was certain he would be ready for the team's next game.
Terry Glenn (WR) 10/15: Glenn said Sunday that he plans to begin running this week, but would not commit to a timetable for his return to the playing field.
Anthony Henry (CB) From Week 5: Cornerback Anthony Henry suffered a right ankle injury in week 4, and sat out Sunday's loss to the Patriots. The Cowboys aren't sure when Henry will be able to return. He will begin rehabbing his ankle this week.

Update: 10/17: Confirming the obvious, Henry has been officially ruled out for week 7.

Bobby Carpenter (LB) From Week 5: Linebacker Bobby Carpenter is playing with a partially torn quadriceps tendon. If he tears is further, it will end his season.

    Denver Broncos
Simeon Rice (DE) From Week 5: (The Broncos Had A Week 6 Bye) Defensive end Simeon Rice sat out last Sunday's blowout loss to the Chargers due to shoulder pain that he has been dealing with all season. He and coach Mike Shanahan have both indicated - Rice directly, and Shanahan indirectly - that the DE's play this year has been a disappointment due to the left shoulder. Rice is improving and says that his range of motion is getting better, and he expects to play October 21st against the Steelers.

Update: 10/16: Coach Mike Shanahan said that Rice practice fully on Monday. He has been regaining strength, and appears likely to play this week, barring a setback.

Update: 10/20: Rice has been informed that he will be inactive again this week. Rice is clearly frustrated, saying that he is fully healed. He indicated that he will not request his release from the team, despite his frustration - this one sounds like a healthy inactivation, which is surprising considering that Rice has 121 career sacks and the Broncos' defense has been struggling.

Champ Bailey (CB) From Week 5: (The Broncos Had A Week 6 Bye) Head coach Mike Shanahan says that a quadriceps injury suffered by cornerback Champ Bailey would likely have kept him out for a week 6 game, if the Broncos were not on a bye. Thanks to the extra time to heal, though, Shanahan says that he does not think Bailey will miss the team's week 7 game against the Steelers.

Update: 10/16: Bailey sat out practice Monday, but says that he hopes to be able to get back on the field Wednesday.

Update: 10/17: Wednesday came and went with Bailey watching from the sidelines. Coach Shanahan's comment when asked about Bailey was, "We'll see."

Update: 10/19: Bailey is considered a game day decision. He was able to practice on a limited basis Friday. If he can't go, Domonique Foxworth will start.

Javon Walker (WR) From Week 5: (The Broncos Had A Week 6 Bye) An inflamed knee has sidelined Walker for the last few weeks. Walker said last week that he will be back for the October 21st game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Update: 10/16: Walker practiced Monday, and appears to be on track to play against the Steelers this week.

Update: 10/17: Walker was limited in practice on Wednesday. He is determined to play, and notes that adrenalin will make him feel like he's 100%. Walker added that he doesn't feel "much" pain while he is playing, and that it usually sets in afterwards.

Update: 10/18: Walker reportedly will not play this week. The Denver Post reports that Walker will undergo surgery Thursday to repair his right knee. He is expected to miss another four weeks. Coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday that Walker looked ready to go on Monday, but that his knee pain acted up on Thursday and the medical staff says that he needs to get it cleaned out. Walker had the knee surgically repaired two years ago.

Update: 10/19: After the completion of surgery, Walker's doctors said that they expect him to miss six weeks, making him unavailable until December.

    Detroit Lions
Alex Lewis (LB) From Week 5: (The Lions Had A Week 6 Bye) Linebacker Alex Lewis was inactive again last Sunday with an injured hamstring.
Calvin Johnson (WR) From Week 5: (The Lions Had A Week 6 Bye) Rookie wideout Calvin Johnson played last Sunday against the Redskins, but was largely ineffective (along with the rest of the Lions' offense), and eventually came out of the game when his injured back begame sore.

    Green Bay Packers
Bubba Franks (TE) 10/15: Shortly after the refs stole a touchdown from him by missing a clear pushout, tight end Bubba Franks came up lame and had to be taken to the locker room on a cart. On Monday, head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Franks suffered a knee injury and will miss at least a few weeks.
Cullen Jenkins (DE) 10/15: Jenkins left the game in the second quarter with a knee injury. Coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that he does not believe it is serious, but that the medical staff wanted to do some more tests. The Packers have a week 7 bye.
Junius Coston (OL) From Week 5: Coston turned his ankle in practice on Thursday, and was inactive on Sunday. The Packers have a week 7 bye.
Vernand Morency (RB) From Week 5: Morency played Sunday, but carried the ball only 4 times and took a knee to the back that reportedly hurt his ribs. He did return to the game, but didn't do much. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that Morency might be limited in practices for the rest of the year. He should be able to play after the team's week 7 bye.
Scott Wells (C) From Week 5: Center Scott Wells was inactive Sunday with a fracture to the orbital bone around his eye.

    Houston Texans
Andre Johnson (WR) From Week 5: Johnson's sprained knee cost him another game Sunday, but the team is hopeful that he will be ready to return for week 7.

    Indianapolis Colts
Freddy Keiaho (LB) From Week 5: (The Colts Had A Week 6 Bye) Linebacker Freddy Keiaho missed last Sunday's game with a concussion. The Colts had a bye in week 6, which was likely enough time to get Keiaho back on the field.

Update: 10/19: Keiaho was able to practice during the week and should be on the field on Monday night.

Marvin Harrison (WR) From Week 5: (The Colts Had A Week 6 Bye) Marvin Harrison's knee injury forced him to sit out last Sunday's game against the Buccaneers. The Colts had a bye in week 6.

Update: 10/19: Harrison's status for Monday night is still uncertain. The Colts have listed him as questionable, and he has only participated in practice on a limited basis during the week. Coach Tony Dungy indicated Friday that he believes Harrison will be available, but it is far from certain.

Joseph Addai (RB) From Week 5: (The Colts Had A Week 6 Bye) Running back Joseph Addai was inactive last Sunday with a shoulder injury. Late in the week, there was a chance he would play, but ultimately the Colts decided to deactivate him. Kenton Keith had an excellent day, running for 121 yards and 2 TDs. The Colts had a bye in week 6, and Addai should get the nod for week 7.

Update: 10/19: Addai is expected to play Monday night.

Bob Sanders (S) From Week 5: (The Colts Had A Week 6 Bye) Sanders has bruised ribs, and was ruled out for last Sunday's win over the Buccaneers. The Colts had a bye in week 6, after which Sanders should be back.

Update:10/16: Sanders said Tuesday that he expects to play Monday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Update: 10/19: Sanders should be good to go for Monday night's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

    Jacksonville Jaguars
Reggie Hayward (DE) From Week 5: A strained hamstring forced defensive end Reggie Hayward to miss Sunday's game against the Texans. He is listed as questionable on the injruy report. If he is not healthy enough to play, Paul Spicer is expected to get the start.
Fred Taylor (RB) From Week 5: Taylor played Sunday, but was limited. Maurice Jones-Drew had a nice game, particularly in the fourth quarter, but Taylor managed 90 yards on six carries, as well.
Josh Scobee (K) From Week 5: Scobee's quadriceps strain prevented him from playing again in week 6. John Carney continues to play in Scobee's place.

    Kansas City Chiefs
Kyle Turley (OL) From Week 5: Offensive tackle Kyle Turley sat out Sunday's game with an ankle injury. Chris Terry started in Turley's place. Turley should be able to return this week, but is expected to be Terry's backup.
Eddie Kennison (WR) From Week 5: Aggravated his hamstring in week 5, and sat out week 6.

    Miami Dolphins
Trent Green (QB) From Week 5: Quarterback Trent Green is recovering from another serious concussion. He believes that he can return this year, but don't expect it soon. Cleo Lemon is the current starter.
Travares Tillman (S) From Week 5: Safety Travares Tillman underwent knee surgery during week 5. He sat out Sunday's game, but it is unclear how much longer he will be sidelined.
Vonnie Holliday (DT) From Week 5: Defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday, as expected, missed Sunday's game after suffering a fracture in his lower right leg in week 4. Coach Cam Cameron called it a "slight fracture" and noted that it should not affect the defensive tackle long-term.

    Minnesota Vikings
Dwight Smith (S) 10/18: Defensive back Dwight Smith was absent from practice on Thursday with a hamstring injury. He was limited all last week, but still managed to start on Sunday.

Update: 10/19: The Vikings have ruled Smith out for Sunday's game. Tank Williams and Mike Doss will get more time with Smith sidelined.

    New England Patriots
Sammy Morris (RB) 10/5: Morris was forced from Sunday's game with a chest injury. He did not return. It is unclear whether his injury is to the ribs, muscular, or otherwise. The Patriots are notorious for not revealing any injury information whatsoever, so if you're hoping to start Morris this week, you had better have a contingency plan and check the inactive lists before gametime.

Update: 10/17: A league source has revealed that Morris injured a bone in his chest, and will miss at least one week and possible a month. The injury was to the bone that connects the sternum (breastbone) to the clavicle (collarbone). While he was in severe pain, tests did not reveal any broken bones.

Update: 10/20: The Patriots officially ruled Morris out on Saturday.

Benjamin Watson (TE) 10/15: The Patriots lost tight end Benjamin Watson to an ankle injury late in the first half of Sunday's win over the Falcons. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, but did not return to the game.

Update: 10/20: Watson has been downgraded to OUT for Sunday's game.

Laurence Maroney (RB) From Week 5: Maroney made the trip to Dallas, but did not play. The fact that he traveled is a good sign for him, and his return may be escalated if Sammy Morris' chest injury turns out to be serious.

Update: 10/18: Maroney said Thursday that he will not jeopardize his own health by playing when he's not ready just because Sammy Morris is hurt. Doesn't sound too good, does it? He didn't say whether or not he is ready to play this week, but his statement certainly wasn't a "heck yea, I'm ready!" kind of comment.

    New Orleans Saints
Robert Meachem (WR) 10/17: Head coach Sean Payton says that Meachem has been improving from offseason arthroscopic surgery on his knee, and is reportedly running much better. However, Payton adds that Meachem is "still a ways away" from returning.
Usama Young (CB) 10/17: Rookie cornerback Usama Young hurt his shoulder on Sunday. His status for week 7 is currently uncertain.
Olindo Mare (K) From Week 5: Mare has been dealing with a groin injury, and very nearly lost his job last week, but he managed to hold on to it and kicked four PATs on Sunday. He was not asked to kick any field goals.
Jason David (CB) From Week 5: Saints' starting cornerback Jason David is expected to miss at least another 2-3 weeks after suffering a fractured forearm in week 3 against the Titans.

Update: 10/19: Cornerback Jason David returned to practice Thursday. He is not expected to play on Sunday.

    New York Giants
Brandon Jacobs (RB) 10/17: Running back Brandon Jacobs is reportedly dealing with an ankle injury. He says that he will be able to push through it.
Derrick Ward (RB) 10/17: Running back Derrick Ward has been banged up for a couple of weeks, now working through an ankle injury that he tweaked on Monday night on the hard Georgia Dome turf. He believes that he will be able to play.
Steve Smith (WR) From Week 5: Receiver Steve Smith's shoulder has healed enough for him to put on the pads and begin practicing. He was on the field for practices last week, but was unable to play on Monday night.

Update: 10/18: Smith fully participated in Thursday's practice, and appears on track to play this week.

Plaxico Burress (WR) From Week 5: Burress has a badly sprained ankle, but is playing through the pain. He should not miss much, if any, game time. However, don't expect him to fully participate in many practices.

    New York Jets
Chris Baker (TE) 10/20: The New York Jets on Saturday ruled tight end Chris Baker OUT of Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals due to a back injury. Baker had been listed as questionable, but the team downgraded him. It is unclear how long he might be sidelined. The Jets, much like the Patriots, will not clearly discuss injuries.

    Oakland Raiders
Sam Williams (LB) 10/15: Linebacker Sam Williams was inactive Sunday with a shoulder injury that he suffered two weeks earlier. The Raiders did not disclose the injury as required by the league, and are subject to a possible fine as a result.

Update: 10/19: Williams is not expected to play on Sunday.

Gerard Warren (DT) From Week 5: The Raiders' sack leader (he has three) missed Sunday's game with a thigh injury. The injury is not expected to be a long-term issue.

Update: 10/17: Warren worked on agility drills during practice on Wednesday. He said that he hopes to be able to practice Friday, and be a game-time decision for Sunday.

Update: 10/19: Warren will not play Sunday.

LaMont Jordan (RB) From Week 5: Jordan played through his back pain Sunday, carrying 18 times for 42 yards and catching 6 passes for another 46 yards against the Chargers. His back will likely be sore for several more weeks, but he should be okay.

Update: 10/17: Jordan practiced Wednesday, and surprised coach Lane Kiffin with how well he has rebounded after getting a heavy workload Sunday against the Chargers.

Derrick Burgess (DE) From Week 5: Burgess was a game-time decision, despite being doubtful, on Sunday, and ended up starting. He had a disappointing day, but was out there and at least came close to registering a sack.
    Josh McCown (QB)

From Week 5: McCown is still wearing a walking boot to protect his injured toe/foot. Daunte Culpepper was unimpressive Sunday, but McCown isn't ready to take the reins. There are whispers of JaMarcus Russell coming from Oakland, but that's not likely to happen, either.

Update: 10/17: McCown was on the field during practice Wednesday, taking a few snaps with the scout team. McCown said after practice, "I think I'm at the point now where if I'm needed, I could definitely go." Don't expect him to start this week, but the Raiders have to be close to a full-blown quarterback controversy - because NOBODY has been playing particularly well.

    Philadelphia Eagles
LJ Smith (TE) From Week 5: Smith returned to action Sunday, and participated in 23 offensive snaps. Coach Andy Reid said Monday that Smith was "pretty sore."

Update: 10/19: Smith was listed as doubtful Friday.

Brian Dawkins (S) From Week 5: Dawkins sat out again Sunday, but has made some improvement as he returns from what has been termed a neck stinger. Head coach Andy Reid said Monday that Dawkins is currently considered day-to-day.

Update: 10/19: The Eagles listed Dawkins as doubtful on Friday, but head coach Andy Reid ruled the safety out of Sunday's game.

Lito Sheppard (CB) From Week 5: Cornerback Lito Sheppard said last week that he would not play if he did not feel that he was 100%. He was practicing late in the week, and likely could have been available, but ultimately the Eagles placed him on the inactive list.

Update: 10/17: Sheppard said Wednesday that he GUARANTEES he will play this week against the Chicago Bears.

    Pittsburgh Steelers
Santonio Holmes (WR) From Week 5: (The Steelers Had A Week 6 Bye) Starting receiver Santonio Holmes injured his hamstring during pregame warmups last Sunday and did not play. Nate Washington and Cedrick Wilson received most of the WR looks. Holmes should be okay for week 7.

Update:10/16: The Tribune Review reports that Holmes is expected to play Sunday night.

Bryant McFadden (CB) From Week 5: (The Steelers Had A Week 6 Bye) Cornerback Bryant McFadden did not play last Sunday, and is expected to miss a few more weeks with a high ankle sprain.
Troy Polamalu (S) From Week 5: (The Steelers Had A Week 6 Bye) Safety Troy Polamalu sat out last Sunday's win over the Seahawks with an abdominal injury. He should be ready to go following the Steelers' week 6 bye.

Update:10/16: Polamalu is expected to play Sunday night.

Casey Hampton (DT) From Week 5: (The Steelers Had A Week 6 Bye) Nose tackle Casey Hampton missed last Sunday's game against the Seahawks with a hamstring injury. He should return following the week 6 bye.
Hines Ward (WR) From Week 5: (The Steelers Had A Week 6 Bye) Wide receiver Hines Ward was inactive last Sunday with a sprained knee. The Steelers had a bye week in week 6.

Update:10/16: Ward will reportedly be able to return to the field this week, according to the Tribune Review.

    San Diego Chargers
Eric Parker (WR) 10/15: Head coach Norv Turner said Monday that wide receiver Eric Parker is seeking a second opinion on his injured toe that has sidelined him for the entire season to date. Parker hurt the toe in June, and underwent surgery to repair the damage in August. If Parker is not going to be able to play this year, Turner said that the team will have to "look and see if there's another direction."
Nick Hardwick (C) 10/15: Pro Bowl center Nick Hardwick suffered a foot injury Sunday against the Raiders, and underwent an MRI on Monday. Hardwick hurt his right foot on the seventh play from scrimmage. The initial word is that he has a sprained foot. The Chargers fear that Hardwick could be out three to four weeks. Cory Withrow took over when Hardwick left the game.

Update: 10/17: Hardwick has a sprained foot, and is expected to be sidelined 3-to-4 weeks. With the bye week, he is likely to miss 2 or 3 games. The prognosis is the best Hardwick and the Chargers could have hoped for. Cory Withrow will fill in.

Jamal Williams (DT) 10/15: All-pro nose tackle Jamal Williams underwent arthroscopic surgery on both knees Monday following Sunday's win over the Oakland Raiders. The Chargers have a week 7 bye, and Williams' surgery was minor (he had some loose particles cleared out). He is hopeful that he will be able to play in week 8 against the Houston Texans.
Vincent Jackson (WR) From Week 5 : A shoulder injury limited Jackson in practice last week, but did not prevent hum from starting against the Raiders. However, he was essentially ineffective.

    San Francisco 49ers
Alex Smith (QB) From Week 5: (The 49ers Had A Week 6 Bye) Quarterback Alex Smith suffered a separated shoulder on September 30th, but is currently on track to return to practice on Wednesday and hopes to play Sunday against the New York Giants.

Update:10/17: Smith has received medical clearance to play, and was expected to practice some on Wednesday. If things go well, he will be able to start this week's game.

Update: 10/19: Head coach Mike Nolan decided to start Trent Dilfer in week 7, but Smith will be dressed for the game.

Update: 10/19: Head coach Mike Nolan said after Friday's practice that Smith will be the third quarterback behind Dilfer and Shaun Hill.

Vernon Davis (TE) From Week 5: (The 49ers Had A Week 6 Bye) Tight end Vernon David is returning from a sprained MCL. He is expected to practice Wednesday and should be ready to play Sunday against the New York Giants.

Update:10/17: Davis was expected to practice on Wednesday, and may be able to play Sunday if he performs well and does not suffer a setback.

    Seattle Seahawks
Marcus Pollard (TE) 10/19: Tight end Marcus Pollard practiced Friday for the first time this week. He was sidelined with a sore knee. While expected to play Sunday, Pollard has been listed as questionable.
Chuck Darby (DT) 10/15: The Seattle Seahawks lost defensive tackle Chuck Darby to a torn patellar tendon suffered during Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Saints. Rookie third-round draft pick Brandon Mebane is expected to start.
Deion Branch (WR) From Week 5: Wide receiver Deion Branch suffered a sprained foot in week 5's loss to the Steelers, and is expected to sit out at least another week. With DJ Hackett also out, Nate Burleson and Bobby Engram will likely start.
Ray Willis (OT) From Week 5: Reserve offensive tackle Ray Willis will sit about another month with a sprained knee.
DJ Hackett (WR) From Week 5: Hackett was inactive again Sunday, but is expected to return to the practice field on Wednesday. He was initially not expected to return until after the Seahawks' bye week, but that timetable appears to have been slightly accelerated.

Update: 10/19: Hackett is considered questionable to play Sunday. He has been participating in practice, and is being termed a game-day decision.

    St Louis Rams
Drew Bennett (WR) 10/15: Wide receiver Drew Bennett is the latest player to join the extensive Rams' injury list after sustaining a hamstring injury in Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He did not return to the game, and his status for week 7 is uncertain.

Update: 10/19: Bennett's sore hamstring has him listed as questionable on the Rams' injury report. He is NOT expected to play.

Brett Romberg (C) 10/15: Rams' center Brett Romberg sprained his left ankle just five minutes into the second quarter of Sunday's loss to the Ravens. X-rays came back negative, and Romberg underwent an MRI on Monday. He insists that he is not going to be out for long, but the extent of the injury is not yet certain. Andy McCollum shifted from left guard to center, with Claude Terrell coming off the bench to fill the open guard position.
Dante Hall (WR/KR) From Week 5: Kick returner and wide receiver Dante Hall has what coach Scott Linehan termed a "significant" left ankle sprain. Hall is expected to miss several weeks due to the injury. The Rams signed former 49er Brandon Williams to help out.

Update: 10/19: As expected, Hall will not play Sunday.

Corey Chavous (S) From Week 5: Starting safety Corey Chavous sat out Sunday's game with a left pectoral injury. Todd Johnson started for Chavous.
Raonall Smith (LB) From Week 5: Linebacker Raonall Smith sat out Sunday with a sprained knee.
Marc Bulger (QB) From Week 5: Quarterback Marc Bulger sat out week 6 with broken ribs, but coach Scott Linehan said Monday that Bulger is expected to start in week 7. We doubt it's a coincidence that Bulger is going to return after Gus Frerotte threw 5 interceptions to the Ravens.

Update: 10/19: Bulger practiced Friday and is listed as probable for Sunday's game.

Steven Jackson (RB) From Week 5: Running back Steven Jackson suffered a partially torn groin in week 3, and sat out Sunday's game. Rookie Brian Leonard has run relatively well the last two weeks. Jackson did some light running last week.

Update: 10/19: The Rams ruled Jackson out of Sunday's game on Friday.

Isaac Bruce (WR) From Week 4: Bruce hurt his hamstring in week 4, and sat out the next two weeks.

Update: 10/19: The Rams listed Bruce as probable for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.

    Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Alex Smith (TE) 10/15: Tight end Alex Smith was carted off the field Sunday with an ankle injury suffered early in the fourth quarter. While it looked serious, head coach Jon Gruden said Monday that Smith has a sprained ankle and there is a chance he could play Sunday against the Detroit Lions. Gruden added, "all we can do is update you in the coming days." Don't expect to see Smith on the field this week, but at least it sounds like he will be able to return without missing a significant amount of time.

Update: 10/19: Smith did not practice, and has been listed as questionable on the injury report. Check the inactive lists, but don't expect him to play after sitting out practices this week.

Patrick Chukwurah (DE) 10/15: Head coach Jon Gruden said Monday that the shoulder injury that forced defensive end Patrick Chukwurah out of Sunday's game is not believed to be a serious injury, and that the DE is considered questionable for this week's game against the Detroit Lions.

Update: 10/19: Chukwurah is not expected to play.

Michael Pittman (RB) From Week 5: Running back Michael Pittman suffered a badly sprained ankle in last Sunday's win over the Saints, and will be sidelined at least 6-to-8 weeks. Earnest Graham replaced Pittman, and is the only viable option at the position for the time being. The Bucs have promoted Kenneth Darby from the practice squad, signed Zack Crockett, and will likely use BJ Askew more in the run game.

Update: 10/18: Ready for a bit of a shocker? Michael Pittman is out of his walking boot, and says that he is about 80% recovered from the severe ankle sprain that was supposed to take 6 to 8 weeks. He claims that he wants to try to run next week, but notes that the training staff will probably hold him back. Nonetheless, there is a chance that Pittman will return to the lineup in just two more weeks. Of course, the Bucs traded for Michael Bennett, so Pittman may not find it quite so easy to step back into the starter's role, but don't write him off just yet...

Update: 10/19: Pittman isn't going to play on Sunday.

Brian Kelly (CB) From Week 5:Brian Kelly inactive Sunday after re-injuring his groin in week 5.

Update: 10/19: Kelly is not expected to play on Sunday.

    Tennessee Titans
Chris Brown (RB) 10/19: Running back Chris Brown has missed practices all week with an ankle injury. His status for Sunday is uncertain. LenDale While will likely get the bulk of any touches Brown would have taken.

Update: 10/21: Brown is expected to sit out Sunday's game. The Titans promoted Quinton Ganther from the practice squad, and we might see a little of him because fullback Ahmard Hall is also expected to miss the game.

Vince Young (QB) 10/15: Quarterback Vince Young reportedly suffered a quadriceps injury while running out of bounds in Sunday's game against the Buccaneers. He underwent an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury. Kerry Collins finished the game.

Update: 10/16: Coach Fisher said that Young's MRI shows that the damage isn't as bad as first feared, and that the quarterback is day-to-day.

Update: 10/19: Young had trouble practicing all week, and is a game-time decision. Kerry Collins took all the first team snaps on Friday.

Update: 10/21: Kerry Collins is expected to start Sunday's game, reports the Tennessean.

Brandon Jones (WR) From Week 5: Receiver Brandon Jones is dealing with a knee injury and has been unable to participate in practices last week. On Monday, he underwent arthroscopic surgery and is expected to miss the next two weeks.
Albert Haynesworth (DT) From Week 5: Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth played Sunday with a sore ankle, but sustained a groin injury during the game. He fought through the injury and finished the game. He reportedly felt better Monday.

    Washington Redskins
Casey Rabach (C) 10/15: Center Casey Rabach sustained a reportedly "minor" right groin strain in Sunday's loss to the Green Bay Packers. Director of Sports Medicine Bubba Tyer indicated Monday that Rabach is expected to be ok.

Update: 10/17: Rabach is still expected to play on Sunday, but is unlikely to practice before Friday.

Update: 10/18: Rabach did not practice Thursday, but still intends to play on Sunday.

Update: 10/19: The Redskins listed Rabach as probable, but indicated that he will be a game-time decision for Sunday.

Update: 10/20: Rabach was downgraded to questionable Saturday after a workout did not turn out as well as had been hoped. He will likely be a somewhat pessimistic game-time decision, with Mike Pucillo expected to start in Rabach's place.

Todd Wade (RT) 10/15: Right tackle Todd Wade left Sunday's game near the end of the first half with a groin injury. He returned late in the game when his replacement, Stephon Heyer, was also injured. With the injury to Casey Rabach, the Redskins had no other offensive linemen to step in when Heyer went down.

Update: 10/17: Wade currently expects to start on Sunday, despite the fact that he probably will not be able to practice before Friday, at the earliest. Jason Fabini is expected to work at tackle in practice this week.

Update: 10/18: Wade returned to practice Thursday. He says that he did not participate in every possible drill, but did enough to be listed as full participation.

Update: 10/19: Wade is listed as probable for Sunday.

Stephon Heyer (OL) 10/15: Reserve lineman Stephon Heyer pulled a hamstring late in Sunday's game. He was replaced by Todd Wade, who re-entered the game despite a strained groin.

Update: 10/18: Heyer remained sidelined Thursday.

Update: 10/19: The Redskins listed Heyer as questionable on Friday. Considering that he hasn't practiced all week, the Redskins will likely have to promote an OL or two, even if Heyer is available.

    Marcus Washington (LB)

From Week 5: Washington's hamstring prevented the linebacker from playing Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

Update: 10/17: Washington was on the practice field in pads on Wednesday, but was not expected to fully participate.

Update: 10/18: Washington was limited in practice Thursday, and has not ruled himself out of this week's game. He is, however, being cautious with his hamstring injury and working back into things slowly.

Update: 10/19: Washington is listed as questionable after not practicing on Friday.

Santana Moss (WR) From Week 5: Moss played Sunday against the Packers, but he was horrible. He eventually took HIMSELF out of the game, reportedly not because he was hurt but because he was playing so poorly.

    Medical Dictionary

A-C Joint – An abbreviation for the Acromioclavicular joint, the A-C is the joint of the shoulder where the acromion process (of the scapula) and the distal end of the clavicle meet. The acromion is the upper-most part of the shoulder just above where there ball of the humerus meets the shoulder socket. Most shoulder separations occur at this point.

Avulsion Fracture - An avulsion fracture occurs when an injury causes a ligament or tendon to pull off a small piece of bone. This type of injury is often associated with an injury to the ligament or tendon itself. Avulsion fractures can cause intense pain, but rarely requires surgery to reattach the ligament or tendon, except in cases when a large portion of bone has been widely separated, or in the event of serious tendon or ligament damage. An avulsion fracture will normally heal on its own and will typically not cause any problems afterwards, although it may still be visible on an X-Ray.

Bruised Sternum – The sternum is often called the “breastbone”. It is the flat bone in the center of the chest that connects the first 7 sets of ribs and the clavicles. A bruised sternum can create intense pain with any movement, including throwing or even breathing. A significant injury to the sternum can also put pressure on the lungs and heart.

    Collateral Ligament Injuries
MCL (Medial) and LCL (Lateral) Collateral Ligament Injuries - The collateral ligaments are located on the sides of the knee joint, with the MCL located on the inner side, and the LCL on the outer. They provide stabilization, especially for side-to-side motion. The LCL is very rarely injured, but the MCL can be damaged with relative ease. A hit to the outside of the knee while the lower leg is stationary can cause an injury. Surgery is generally required only in the case of a complete tear. Otherwise, rest, ice, compression, and elevation are considered the best means to recovery.

    Cruciate Ligament Injuries
ACL (Anterior) and PCL (Posterior) Cruciate Ligament Injuries – The knee contains two cruciate ligaments and two collateral. The cruciate ligaments, called “cruciate” because they form a cross inside the knee, are the ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, and PCL, or posterior cruciate ligament. The ACL is located toward the front and prevents the shin bone from sliding forward beneath the thigh bone. A tear of the ACL typically requires reconstructive surgery. The PCL is injured much less frequently than the ACL, and an athlete can often return to action quickly with rehabilitation.

Concussion – A concussion is typically caused by some sort of severe head trauma. The brain will often be moved violently against the skull, creating a reaction similar to a seizure. The short term result of a concussion may include some bleeding on the brain, fluid drainage from the ears, nose, or mouth, vomiting, confusion and dizziness, and unconsciousness. A concussion will also often include some short-term memory loss, usually of events immediately before and after the event. For the long term, a concussion may cause persistent dizziness, confusion, and a greater likelihood to suffer additional concussions. In addition, repeated or excessively severe brain injuries can cause permanent brain damage and memory loss.

Deltoid Ligament - The deltoid ligament is a strong, flat, triangular band that attaches the medial, or inside, portion of the ankle to the foot. The deltoid ligament is covered by several tendons.

Hamstring Injuries – The hamstring is a series of long muscles that run down the back of the thigh. These muscles help control both hip and knee movement and are critical to running or even walking. Hamstring injuries will often be a relatively minor pull or strain, which typically take a week or two of rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to heal. More severe injuries can linger for 6 to 8 weeks, and a serious tear may require season-ending surgery. Hamstring injuries are particularly tricky because even minor pulls tend to linger and have been known to hamper an athlete for the entire season. This is because the hamstring is so commonly used and is involved with both the hip and the knee that it is extremely difficult for an athlete to give it proper treatment before returning to action.

Hip Flexor – The hip flexor is actually a muscle that helps the hip to bend forward. When an injury is referred to as a “hip flexor,” the player typically suffered a strain to the hip flexor muscle.

Hip Pointer – A hip pointer occurs when an athlete suffers an injury to the pelvis, specifically the iliac crest, caused by a direct blow to the area. The iliac crest is the bony portion of the pelvis, commonly called the “hip bone,” that can be felt along the waistline. While the term “hip pointer” usually refers to a bruise to either the bone or muscle, it can also be applied to more serious injuries such as a small chip or fracture, or a complete break. Typically, a player noted as having a hip pointer suffered a bruise to the crest that can be painful and limit mobility for a relatively short period of time.

Hyperextension - Extreme extension, or straightening, of a limb or body part.

Pectoral Muscle Tear – The pectoral muscle connects the ribs, clavicle, and upper arm with a large mass of muscle, commonly known as the chest. As it is instrumental to everything from moving the arm to turning the head, to simply breathing, a tear or rupture in this muscle mass will often result in a player being placed on injured reserve. A pectoral injury can take at least three or four months to heal.

Plantar Fascia Injuries – The Plantar Fascia is a thick, broad, inelastic band of fibrous material that attaches to the heel and fans out along the bottom of the foot to attach to the metatarsal bones around the ball of the foot. It is inelastic and typically drawn quite tight to maintain the foot’s arch. While an injury can occur anywhere on the plantar fascia, most are localized around point where it meets the heel and involve some amount of tearing.

Sprain – A sprain is a ligament injury that can cause pain, swelling, and bruising of a joint. While it is more common to sprain a knee, wrist, or ankle, a player can sprain other joints as well, including the foot, back, chest, etc... Sprains can often linger for several weeks and vary in severity from relatively mild, which will cause some manageable pain, to severe, which will create enough pain and swelling to limit mobility and keep a player out of a game. Certain positions are more limited by sprains than others. In the case of a wide receiver, a mid-foot sprain can be debilitating due to the sprinting and cutting the player must perform.

Stinger – A stinger, sometimes called a burner or pinched nerve, is an injury to the nerves of the neck or shoulder. The term “stinger” refers primarily to the symptoms an athlete experiences that include painful electrical sensations through one of the arms. Technically, a stinger is usually a spine injury, but never a spinal cord injury. As it does not involve damage to the spinal cord, paralysis is not a serious concern. While symptoms will often fade on their own, stingers do tend to recur and can result in persistent pain and weakness in the arm, which can result in lost playing time. A stinger can occur when a nerve is compressed by the head being forced backward and toward one side, or when the nerves in the neck and shoulder are over-stretched by the head being forced sideways.

Strain – A strain occurs when a muscle is overstretched and tears. Also called a “pulled muscle,” this type of injury, while painful, is fairly common. Unlike a complete muscle tear, in which the entire muscle group will often completely separate, a player can often play despite a strain. More severe strains, and strains of important muscle groups, can hold a player out until the injury heals. Surgery is not a serious consideration to repair a strain.

Turf Toe – Turf Toe is an injury, perhaps a bruise or sprain, to the joint that connects the big toe to the rest of the foot. The injury is usually caused by severe or excessive upward bending or hyperextension of the big toe. Common symptoms are pain, swelling, and tenderness, and severe cases will often cause restriction of motion and bruising. Surgery is very rare, but the healing process can be lengthy. A turf toe injury will often bother an athlete all season, but will not end his year.
