Jets Sign TE Keller To Multi-Year Deal

ImageThe Jets signed TE Dustin Keller, the #30 pick, to a multi-year deal on Friday.

Keller will have to battle vets Chris Baker and Bubba Franks, plus several other players to get much playing time in 2008. The good news is that none of them are very good.

Ravens Sign QB Flacco
ImageThe Baltimore Ravens and Joe Flacco, the team's first-round draft pick, agreed in principle Wednesday night to a five-year deal expected to reach $30 million.

Flacco, the former University of Delaware standout, is expected to earn over $30 million which includes a guaranteed money of $8.75 million, according to his agent, Joe Linta.

This is good news for the young signal caller if he has any chance of starting in week 1. He is still a longshot sure, but they didn't move back up in the first to get him for nothing.

Cowboys Sign FS Hamlin To 6-Year Deal

ImageThe Dallas Cowboys have signed FS Ken Hamlin to a new 6-year contract worth $39 million, including $15 million guaranteed.

Hamlin had his finest season as a pro in 2007, including his first trip to the Pro Bowl. This really locks up a good secondary for Dallas for the long term, especially if Adam Jones actually gets to play AND keep his nose clean.

Bears Agree With RB Jones For 1-Year Deal

ImageThe Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with FA RB Kevin Jones on a 1-year, $605, 000 contract according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network.

Well this definitely puts a little hesitation in drafting Matt Forte now. Forte is still the future, but Jones plays almost the same type of game as Forte, so this will almost certainly means he splits carries, a t the elast, with Jones for 2008.

Colts QB Manning To Miss 4-6 Weeks

ImageColts QB Peyton Manning will miss 4-6 weeks after having a bursa sac removed from his left knee. That timetable means he would miss at least the start of training camp. The Colts open camp on July 25 and break camp on Aug. 15.

"The procedure was routine. The Colts' medical staff expects a full and complete return to action," said Colts president Bill Polian.

He will most likely miss a good portion of training camp, but if anyone can get away with missing some time, Peyton is that guy. This is nothing to be concerned about, Manning is still the #2 QB in fantasy circles.

RB Henry Fails Another Drug Test
ImageFormer Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry has tested positive for marijuana again, reports Fox 31 Sports in Colorado.

An NFL source told the television station late Thursday about the positive test and said Henry likely would be suspended for a year for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

This is the second time that he faces a 1-year suspension for drugs. He beat the last one on a technicality, but you can bet the league covered their bases on this one. If he is indeed suspended for a year, it may be his death knell in the NFL.

Jaguars WR Jones Arrested
ImageJacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones was arrested early Thursday morning in his former college town and charged with felony possession of cocaine. Jones, 25, and two other men were arrested just before 1:00 a.m. on Thursday after police said they observed Jones cutting up cocaine with a credit card in a car.

A first-round draft pick by the Jaguars in 2005, Jones has been a disappointment as a wide receiver in the NFL. The 6-foot-6, 238-pound wideout had 24 catches for 317 yards and four touchdowns last season, and has 101 catches for 1,392 yards and 13 scores in three seasons with Jacksonville.

Just another player with loads of talent that couldn't control themselves. The writing was on the wall that the team would cut him before this, now it just becomes when.

Ex-NFL Player Kiel Killed In Car Crash
ImageEx-San Diego Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was killed in a car smash, police said Saturday. He was 27.

San Diego police said Kiel's body was thrown from his 2004 Chevrolet sedan, which crashed into a wall.

Kiel, who was driving alone after leaving a party, was conscious when paramedics arrived at the crash. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

A 2003 second-round National Football League entry draft selection, Kiel appeared in 59 games over parts of four seasons with the Chargers.

Browns' WR Jurevicius Undergoes 2nd Knee Surgery

Cleveland Browns' wide receiver Joe Jurevicius underwent a second knee surgery this week after experiencing discomfort and swelling in the surgically-repaired joint.

No determination has been regarding Jurevicius' availability for the start of training camp.

Chargers Sign RB Thomas, T Clark
Image The San Diego Chargers on Tuesday signed two of their 2008 draft picks, running back Marcus Thomas and tackle Corey Clark, to four-year contracts.

A fifth-round selection, Thomas rushed for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior at Texas-El Paso.

Clark, who was taken in the seventh round, was a two-year starter at Texas A&M.

Thomas is a pounding back and could easily surprise Fantasy owners in 2008. There is a chance he will get a shot to be the goal line back. Keep your eye on him to see how the Chargers use him during training camp.

Injury Watch

\
Arizona Cardinals
Bryant Johnson (WR) 10/11: Receiver Bryant Johnson sat out Wednesday's practice with a bruised quadriceps muscle, but should be fine to play this weekend. At last update, he was dressed and appeared ready to participate in Thursday's practice.
Matt Leinart (QB) 10/8: Quarterback Matt Leinart ended the quarterback shuffle in Arizona on Sunday by breaking his collarbone. He will miss several weeks, at least, and is currently considered out indefinitely.

Update: 10/9: The Cardinals placed Leinart on injured reserve Tuesday, ending his season. Journeyman Tim Rattay was signed to the open roster spot, and Kurt Warner will start.

Levi Brown (OT) From Week 4 : Offensive tackle Levi Brown has an ankle injury. There was no significant damage on his MRI, but Brown sat out Sunday.

Update: 10/11: Brown was limited in practice Wednesday, then managed to tweak his injured ankle and was sitting out by the end of the session. His status for Sunday does not look promising.

Update: 10/13: Brown is officially out for Sunday's game.

Anquan Boldin (WR) From Week 4: Boldin was held out of Sunday's game with a hip injury.

Update: 10/10: Boldin went through a tough workout on Monday, and did not experience a setback in his sore hip. However, he spent Wednesday's practice session rehabbing, and his status for Sunday is still up in the air.

Update: 10/12: Boldin is increasingly unlikely to play this week.

Update: 10/13: The Cardinals listed Boldin as doubtful Friday after he missed yet another practice. He may be physically able to play, but without practicing in three weeks his chances of getting on the field are slim and none.

Atlanta Falcons
Byron Leftwich (QB) 10/12: Quarterback Byron Leftwich left Thursday's practice with an ankle injury. X-rays were negative, and he later said that it's a minor sprain.
Todd Weiner (OL) 10/10: Starting right tackle Todd Weiner underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee Wednesday, and will miss two-to-six weeks. Second-year player Tyson Clabo is expected to start at right tackle.
Wayne Gandy (OT) 10/8: Offensive tackle Wayne Gandy was lost for the season Sunday with a torn ACL. He was replaced in the lineup by Renardo Foster.
Jonathan Babineaux (DT) From Week 4: Babineaux sat out Sunday's game with stretched knee ligaments. It is the second-straight game he has missed.

Baltimore Ravens
Steve McNair (QB) 11/11: It is not yet known why, but quarterback Steve McNair sat out practice Thursday. McNair has been battling a groin injury for several weeks.

Update: 10/12: McNair missed practice again Friday, but he is not out because of his groin. Apparently, a sore back has him sidelined. He should be able to play, but if you're thinking about starting him, better keep an eye on the Whiz inactive lists.

Update: 10/13: As alluded to on Friday's update, McNair is being considered a game-time decision.

Derrick Mason (WR) 10/10: Receiver Derrick Mason is dealing with a knee injury, and was not on the practice field on Wednesday.

Update: 10/11: Mason sat out Wednesday with a stomach bug. He was back on the field Thursday.

Mike Flynn (C) 10/8: Center Mike Flynn suffered a right knee injury that forced him from Sunday's game.

Update: 10/10: Flynn sat out Wednesday's practice

Update: 10/11: Mike Flynn was wearing a brace on his sprained knee, but he was at practice Thursday and appeared to be moving around well.

Update: 10/13: Flynn has been limited in workouts, but is a game-time decision. He says that his sprained knee feels better, but that returning this week would "really beat the curve."

Adam Terry (LT) 10/8: Left tackle Adam Terry, filling in for Jonathan Ogden, left Sunday's win over the 49ers with a left ankle injury. Head coach Brian Billick said Monday that the injury could force Terry to the bench for week 6's game against the Rams.

Update: 10/10: Terry was not at Wednesday's practice.

Update: 10/11: Terry was not at Thursday's practice.

Update: 10/13: Terry is out.

Dan Cody (LB) From Week 4 : Linebacker Dan Cody, currently on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, injured his foot last week. The severity of the injury and whether or not it would set him back were not disclosed.
Todd Heap (TE) From Week 4 : Tight end Todd Heap has a hamstring injury that prevented him from playing on Sunday. Coach Brian Billick said Monday that he is hopeful Heap will be able to play against the Rams on Sunday.

Update: 10/10: Heap was back on the practice field Wednesday.

Update: 10/13: Heap is expected to play Sunday.

Samari Rolle (CB) From Week 4 : Rolle missed the last three games due to a medical condition, the nature of which has not been revealed, and the effects of medication he is taking for the aforementioned condition.

Update: 10/10: Rolle finally returned to practice on Wednesday.

Update: 10/13: Rolle is questionable. The Ravens may want to hold him out one more week to help him get back up to speed, but he was able to practice this week and should at least be available.

Jonathan Ogden (OT) From Week 4: Ogden's turf toe forced him to miss another game Sunday. We will keep an eye on his status during the course of the week. Head coach Brian Billick hinted on Monday that Ogden may be ready to give it another shot this week against the Rams.

Update: 10/10: Ogden was on the field Wednesday wearing pads, but did not appear to be taking part in contact drills.

Update: 10/13: Ogden is questionable. If he plays, don't expect to see a lot of him.

Buffalo Bills
Brad Butler (OL) 10/8: A hip injury sidelined offensive guard Brad Butler early in Monday night's game against the Cowboys.

Update: 10/10: Butler's injured hip prevented him from practicing on Wednesday.

Ashton Youboty (CB) From Week 4: Youboty sat out Monday night's game against the Cowboys with an ankle injury.

Update: 10/10: Youboty practiced Wednesday, but was reportedly not at full speed.

Jim Leonhard (S) From Week 4: Safety Jim Leonhard missed Monday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys due to a calf injury.

Update: 10/10: Leonhard was held out Wednesday, and coach Dick Jauron said that his injury may keep him out longer than some of the other injured Bills.

Keith Ellison (LB) From Week 4: Linebacker Keith Ellison was active for Monday night against the Cowboys.
J.P. Losman (QB) From Week 4: Quarterback J.P. Losman suffered a sprained knee in week 3 and sat out Monday night's game against the Cowboys. Trent Edwards has filled in very well with Losman out.

Update: 10/10: The Bills had Losman on the practice field Wednesday, and he reportedly looked pretty good. The Bills want to see him in pads before making a decision on their QB situation.

Coy Wire (LB) From Week 4: Wire was inactive again on Sunday. With a grade 2 sprain of the MCL, Wire is getting closer but seems likely to miss a little more time.

Update: 10/10: Wire practiced Wednesday, but did not look as fluid as he should. BuffaloBills.com's Chris Brown reports that he appeared to be "limited in his movement."

Carolina Panthers
David Carr (QB) 10/8: Quarterback David Carr suffered a back injury Sunday that forced him from the game temporarily. He was carted from the field, and says that he was worried that his career might be over. After some time in the locker room, he was able to return and finish the game. Matt Moore is the only other QB currently on the roster. The Panthers will pick up another QB this week.

Update: 10/10: The Panthers have signed QB Vinny Testaverde to back up Carr. At this point, it still looks like Carr will play. He did miss practice Wednesday, and said that he suffered "squished" (his word) vertebrae, but we expect that with a little more treatment and rest, he should be able to go.

Update: 10/11: After Carr missed another practice Thursday, speculation that Vinny Testaverde may start began to fly. Don't buy into it... Carr did sit out Thursday, but did some throwing on the side and said that he felt good. He's a little tight in his release, but said that he feels a lot better than on Monday, and believes that he will be nice and loose by Sunday. Let someone else get all excited over the colorblind quadragenarian.

Update: 10/12: In this business, a good "we told you so" goes a long way. While coach John Fox was still saying after Friday's practice that Carr will be a game-time decision, the Panthers listed him as probable for Sunday. He practiced, did everything he needed to, and reportedly looked good. The only way Testaverde even has a shot at starting is if Carr has a major setback.

Update: 10/13: And... there's been a setback. On the flight to Phoenix, Carr's back reportedly tightened up. The Panthers have downgraded him to questionable on the injury report, and it will now be a game-time decision. Quite frankly, we still expect to see Carr on the field Sunday, but this is more or less the worst possible news for Carr. If he can't play, the team has to decide between undrafted Matt Moore, and really old guy Vinny Testaverde, who joined the team on Tuesday. Testaverde has reportedly looked good in practice, but how fluent with the offense could he possibly be? He would likely get the start, but if he does, don't expect much complexity to the Panthers' offense.

Nick Goings (RB) From Week 4 : Goings sat out Sunday's game with a concussion. The Panthers have hinted that Goings may miss more than just the one game.
Dan Morgan (LB)

From Week 4 : We're SHOCKED that Dan Morgan is hurt.A partially torn Achilles' tendon sidelined the Crystalline Linebacker once again on Sunday. Rookie Jon Beason started, and may end up taking the job on a permanent basis.

Update: 10/10: Coach John Fox didn't officially rule Morgan out for this week, but for all intents and purposes he ruled Morgan out for this week. The Panthers have a bye in week 7, and it appears that they want to rest Morgan and evaluate him over the bye.

Jake Delhomme (QB) From Week 4 : Delhomme will undergo reconstructive surgery on his elbow next week, and will be placed on injured reserve. Recovery will take at least 6-9 months, and there is a chance he will not recover sufficiently to play next year. David Carr is starting, but was also injured Sunday.

Chicago Bears
Bernard Berrian (WR) 10/10: Wide receiver Bernard Berrian was hurt in Sunday night's win over the Packers. On Wednesday, he was held out of practice due to a toe injury.

Update: 10/12: Berrian returned to practice Friday, and appeared to be in good spirits.

Darwin Walker (DT) 10/10: Defensive tackle Darwin Walker suffered a sprained knee in the first half of Sunday night's game against the Green Bay Packers. He is expected to sit out week 6's game against the Vikings, and return October 21st against his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles. Anthony Adams will replace Walker in the starting lineup.
John Tait (OT) From Week 4 : John Tait has a high ankle sprain, and was forced to miss Sunday night's game against the Packers.

Update: 10/12: Tait returned to practice Friday.

Nathan Vasher (CB) From Week 4 : Cornerback Nathan Vasher sat out Sunday night's game with a partially torn groin. He is expected to miss a few more weeks.

Cincinnati Bengals
Willie Anderson (RT) From Week 4 (BYE) : (The Bengals had a bye. The following is the IW entry from last week.) Right tackle Willie Anderson has been hampered by a foot injury since training camp that has limited him, and also suffered a knee injury against the Seattle Seahawks in week 3. After week 4's game against the Patriots, in which Anderson played only three snaps, he had a significant amount of trouble moving around and getting dressed. He is uncertain if the bye week will be enough time to be ready to play on October 14th in Kansas City.

Update: 10/10: Anderson said Wednesday that he will not play Sunday, and does not even expect to be on the sidelines with his teammates. Stacy Andrews will start for Anderson.

Rudi Johnson (RB) From Week 4 (BYE): (The Bengals had a bye. The following is the IW entry from last week.) Johnson was inactive Monday night with a hamstring injury.

Update: 10/10: The bye was apparently not enough time for Johnson to heal. On Wednesday, he was watching practice in street clothes before heading inside with a team trainer, ostensibly for a workout session.

Update: 10/11: Johnson sat out practice again Thursday.

Update: 10/12: Good news on Rudi - he was dressed and ready to practice on Friday. He will most likely end up splitting carries with Watson this week, but it's a very good sign that he was dressed. Coach Marvin Lewis said after practice that Rudi is healthy, but he will still be a game-time decision.

Caleb Miller (LB)

From Week 4 (BYE) : (The Bengals had a bye. The following is the IW entry from last week.) Linebacker Caleb Miller's lower back injury landed him on the inactive list for Monday night's matchup with the New England Patriots.

Update: 10/10: Miller was in street clothes watching practice on Wednesday.

Update: 10/11: Miller missed practice again on Thursday.

Update: 10/12: It seems unlikely that Miller will play after sitting out again Friday.

Ahmad Brooks (LB) From Week 4 (BYE): (The Bengals had a bye. The following is the IW entry from last week.) Brooks missed Monday night's game against the Patriots with a groin injury.

Update: 10/10: Brooks was not practicing on Wednesday. He was seen watching practice in street clothes.

Update: 10/11: Brooks missed practice again on Thursday.

Update: 10/12: Brooks will most likley sit out this week's game after missing practice again on Friday.

Tab Perry (WR) FromWeek 4: (The Bengals had a bye. The following is the IW entry from last week.) Perry's hamstring forced him to miss week 4's game against the Patriots.

Update: 10/10: Perry is already listed as out for week 6.

Cleveland Browns
Joe Jurevicius (WR) 10/8: Wide receiver Joe Jurevicius experienced some knee swelling during Sunday's game against the New England Patriots. He underwent X-rays, which came up negative. Head coach Romeo Crennel said Monday that he is not sure what Jurevicius' availability will be this week.

Update: 10/11: Head coach Romeo Crennel said Thursday that Jurevicius will try to play Sunday despite his swollen knee.

Jamal Lewis (RB) 10/8: Running back Jamal Lewis left Sunday's game against the Patriots in the first quarter with a foot injury. He did not return. X-rays came back negative, and he is not expected to miss any additional time. Still, we'll keep an eye on his situation. Jason Wright took the RB touches with Lewis sidelined.

Update: 10/10: The NFL Network is reporting that Lewis is expected to miss this week's game.

Update: 10/11: Lewis was wearing a walking boot on Wednesday, but he has not yet been ruled out of Sunday's game. He is considered a game-time decision, and coach Romeo Crennel seems to think that Lewis will be able to play in spite of his sprained foot. Don't hold your breath, but check back here Sunday for the Whiz early inactive lists if you're considering starting him.

Update: 10/13: Lewis will not play Sunday. Jason Wright will start.

Brodney Pool (S) 10/8: Safety Brodney Pool left Sunday's game with a thigh contusion, but the injury does not appear to be serious and he is not expected to miss any game time.

Update: 10/11: Pool was limited on Wednesday.

Darnell Dinkins (TE) 10/8: A hand injury has tight end Darnell Dinkins slated to see a specialist.

Update: 10/11: Dinkins is wearing a cast on his injured hand, and his status for Sunday is doubtful.

Dave Zastudil (P) From Week 4: Zastudil was inactive again with a strained oblique. Scott Player started in his place.

Update: 10/8b: The Browns waived Player on Monday, likely indicating that Zastudil is healthy enough to play in week 6.

Update: 10/11: Zastudil insists that he's fully healed from his back injury.

Dallas Cowboys
Kevin Burnett (LB) 10/9: Linebacker Kevin Burnett has a thigh contusion. His injury was initially reported as a hamstring. His availability for this week's game is uncertain.
Anthony Henry (CB) From Week 4: Cornerback Anthony Henry suffered a right ankle injury in week 4, and sat out Monday night's game against the Bills. He will likely miss a little more time, possibly as much as 3 or 4 games.

Update: 10/9: Head coach Wade Phillips said Tuesday that Henry is progressing, and is out of his walking boot. The team is hopeful that he can be available for this week's game against the Patriots.

Bobby Carpenter (LB) From Week 4 :Linebacker Bobby Carpenter is playing with a partially torn quadriceps tendon. If he tears is further, it will end his season.

Denver Broncos
Simeon Rice (DE) 10/11: Defensive end Simeon Rice sat out Sunday's blowout loss to the Chargers due to shoulder pain that he has been dealing with all season. He and coach Mike Shanahan have both indicated - Rice directly, and Shanahan indirectly - that the DE's play this year has been a disappointment due to the left shoulder. Rice is improving and says that his range of motion is getting better, and he expects to play October 21st against the Steelers.
Champ Bailey (CB) 10/9: Head coach Mike Shanahan says that a quadriceps injury suffered by cornerback Champ Bailey would likely have kept him out for this week's game, if the Broncos were not on a bye. Thanks to the extra time to heal, though, Shanahan says that he does not think Bailey will miss the team's week 7 game against the Steelers.
Tom Nalen (C) 10/8: 14-year veteran Tom Nalen suffered a torn right biceps in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the Chargers. He has been lost for the season.
Nate Jackson (TE) 10/8: Tight end Nate Jackson tore his groin on Sunday, ending his season.
Mike Bell (RB) From Week 4 : The Broncos placed Bell on the inactive list for the second week in a row due to lingering effects of a concussion.
Javon Walker (WR) From Week 4 : The Broncos ruled receiver Javon Walker out for Sunday's loss to the Chargers. Walker said Saturday that he will be back for the October 21st game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Detroit Lions
Alex Lewis (LB) From Week 4 : Linebacker Alex Lewis was inactive again Sunday with an injured hamstring.
Calvin Johnson (WR) From Week 4 : Rookie wideout Calvin Johnson played Sunday against the Redskins, but was largely ineffective (along with the rest of the Lions' offense), and eventually came out of the game when his injured back begame sore.

Green Bay Packers
Junius Coston (OL) 10/12: Coston turned his ankle in practice on Thursday, and sat out Friday. The team hopes the day of rest will allow him to play Sunday.
Vernand Morency (RB) 10/11: The Packers limited running back Vernand Morency on Wednesday. On Monday, he complained of soreness in the strained patellar tendon that cost him the early portion of the season. On Thursday, after being limited the day before, Morency sat out of practice. His status for Sunday has to be considered up in the air.

Update: 10/13: Morency practiced fully on Friday, and is probable for Sunday's game.

Scott Wells (C) 10/9: The Packers saw a big dropoff on the offensive line after center Scott Wells left Sunday night's game against the Bears with a fractured eye socket. He will miss at least this week's game against the Redskins, and possibly longer.
Brandon Jackson (RB) From Week 4 : A shin sprain prevented rookie running back Brandon Jackson from playing in Sunday's game against the Bears. DeShawn Wynn and Vernand Morency handled the workload.

Update: 10/10: Jackson was on the practice field Wednesday, but his status for Sunday against the Redskins is still uncertain. He may not even be activated ahead of Ryan Grant.

Update: 10/11: Jackson was practicing in pads again Thursday, but his status for Sunday is likely tied to Vernand Morency's knee.

Houston Texans
Ahman Green (RB) From Week 4: Ahman Green missed Sunday's game against the Falcons with a knee injury. It was hoped that he would be able to go after a pre-game evaluation, but he ended up on the inactive list. Ron Dayne was unimpressive in relief.

Update: 10/10: Green fully practiced on Wednesday, and should be ready to play on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Update: 10/13: Green isn't even on the Texans' injury report this week.

Jacoby Jones (WR) From Week 4 : Rookie Jacoby Jones got his first NFL start in week 3, and finished the game with a separated shoulder that forced him to sit out the last two Sundays.

Update: 10/11: Jones participated in Wednesday's practice on a limited basis.

Update: 10/13: On Friday, Jones fully participated in practice and has been listed as probable to play this week.

Andre Johnson (WR) From Week 4: Johnson's sprained knee cost him a third game on Sunday.

Update: 10/11: Head coach Gary Kubiak says that Johnson is doubtful to play in week 6. He sat out practice on Wednesday. Expect him to miss this week's game.

Update: 10/13: Johnson has been ruled OUT of Sunday's game.

Indianapolis Colts
Freddy Keiaho (LB) From Week 4 : Linebacker Freddy Keiaho missed Sunday's game with a concussion. The Colts have a bye in week 6.
Marvin Harrison (WR) From Week 4 : Marvin Harrison's knee injury forced him to sit out Sunday's game against the Buccaneers. The Colts have a bye in week 6.
Joseph Addai (RB) From Week 4 : Running back Joseph Addai was inactive Sunday with a shoulder injury. Late in the week, there was a chance he would play, but ultimately the Colts decided to deactivate him. Kenton Keith had an excellent day, running for 121 yards and 2 TDs. The Colts have a bye in week 6.
Bob Sanders (S) From Week 4 : Sanders has bruised ribs, and was ruled out for Sunday's win over the Buccaneers. The Colts have a bye in week 6, after which Sanders should be back.

Jacksonville Jaguars
Reggie Hayward (DE) 10/13: A strained hamstring may force defensive end Reggie Hayward to miss Sunday's game against the Texans. He is listed as questionable on the injruy report. If he is not healthy enough to play, Paul Spicer is expected to get the start.
Fred Taylor (RB) 10/12: After practicing Wednesday, running back Fred Taylor was limited in practice Thursday, and completely missed it on Friday. He has been listed as questionable with a groin injury. Maurice Jones-Drew will start if Taylor is unable to play Sunday against the Texans.

Update: 10/13: Taylor told the Jacksonville Times-Union that he might not play this week against the Houston Texans. He added that he did not feel when he strained the groin, but it was somewhere between Sunday's game against the Chiefs and Wednesday's practice. Taylor says that he could play if he "wanted," but that he and the team have discussed resting it because the Jaguars do not have any more off weeks. He felt pretty good on Friday during practice, so it will be a game-time decision based on how he feels after stretching it out in pregame warmups.

Khalif Barnes (OT) From Week 4: Even with the bye week, Barnes was not ready to play Sunday. He sat out to rest his injured ankle another week.

Update: 10/13:Barnes' ankle appears to be healed, and he will play.

Josh Scobee (K) From Week 4:Scobee's quadriceps strain prevented him from playing again in week 5. John Carney continues to play in Scobee's place.

Update: 10/13: Scobee is still out.

Kansas City Chiefs
Damon Huard (QB) 10/8: Quarterback Damon Huard left Sunday's game with a shoulder injury. As of Monday evening, he was still awaiting test results that will allow Huard and the Chiefs to know whether or not he will be available this week. If not, Brodie Croyle will get the start.<

Update: 10/9: The NFL Network is reporting that an MRI on Huard's shoulder shows no significant damage. Don't be surprised of Brodie Croyle still starts this week, but Huard should not be sidelined for long.

Update: 10/10: Damon Huard WILL START for the Chiefs this week against he Saints. His shoulder held up fine in practice Wednesday, and coach Herm Edwards said afterwards that Huard will play barring a setback.

Kyle Turley (OL) 10/8: Offensive tackle Kyle Turley sat out Sunday's game with an ankle injury. Chris Terry started in Turley's place.
Eddie Kennison (WR) From Week 4: Kennison finally returned to action Sunday, but aggravated his injured hamstring early in the game. He was scheduled for a Monday MRI to determine the extent of the injury. He was replaced by Samie Parker.

Miami Dolphins
Jason Taylor (DE) 10/11: Jason Taylor is barely practicing due to a pair of injuries he suffered in practice last week. He is dealing with a neck injury and a bruised thigh.
Trent Green (QB) 10/8: Quarterback Trent Green suffered another serious concussion Sunday when he took a knee to the head while trying to block. He was taken from the field on a stretcher and spent some time in the hospital before going home with the rest of the team. He will certainly miss at least a week or two, and his career is rightfully in question. Green missed most of last season with a severe concussion, as well. Cleo Lemon filled in Sunday, but a decision will have to be made between Lemon and John Beck. The team may not make that decision until late in the week.

Update: 10/9: Well, that didn't take long. Lemon will start, and coach Cam Cameron said that he never even considered starting Beck.

Donovin Darius (S) From Week 4 : A calf injury sidelined Darius for week 5. He was inactive for the game.
Travares Tillman (S) From Week 4 : Safety Travares Tillman underwent knee surgery last Monday. He sat out Sunday's game, but it is unclear how much longer he will be sidelined.
Vonnie Holliday (DT) From Week 4 : Defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday, as expected, missed Sunday's game after suffering a fracture in his lower right leg last week. Coach Cam Cameron called it a "slight fracture" and noted that it should not affect the defensive tackle long-term. He is likely to miss another week.
Channing Crowder (LB) From Week 4 : Linebacker Channing Crowder injured his ankle in week 4, and sat out Week 5's game. Zach Thomas returned to the starting spot that Crowder filled while Thomas was out.

Minnesota Vikings
Darrion Scott (DE) 10/9: The Vikings lost defensive end Darrion Scott for the season due to a foot injury. Scott was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday. He was primarily serving as a backup at DE and DT after losing the competition to start at DE to Kenechi Udeze. The Star Tribune reports that Scott broke his foot in practice on Monday.
Ray Edwards (DE) From Week 4 :(The Vikings had a bye. The following is last week's IW report.) Defensive end Ray Edwards left Sunday's game against the Packers with a bruised hip. The injury is not expected to cause him to miss any time.
Tarvaris Jackson (QB) From Week 4 :(The Vikings had a bye. The following is last week's IW report.) Jackson was held out again Sunday, but should be ready to go after the team's week 5 bye. Kelly Holcomb hasn't exactly been tearing up the league, so Jackson should be able to at least compete for the job. However, it's not a sure thing at this point that he will start.

Update: 10/3: Head coach Brad Childress says that he thinks Jackson will play on Sunday against the Bears in week 6.

Update: 10/9: Jackson worked with the first team offense on Monday. His groin is not yet 100%, and coach Brad Childress would not commit to starting him, but it looks increasingly like Jackson will be available to play in week 6. As for Jackson himself, he said after practice that he thinks he'll be starting.

Update: 10/12: Head coach Brad Childress said after practice Friday that Jackson is considered probable for Sunday. He did not name Jackson the starter, but it seems likely that he will regain his old job. Jackson did work with the first-team offense during practice, while Kelly Holcomb watched.

New England Patriots
Kevin Faulk (RB) 10/10: Running back Kevin Faulk hurt his leg in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Browns. He said Wednesday that he had a scare, but that he avoided serious injury and will be able to play this week.
Laurence Maroney (RB) From Week 4 : We don't expect to hear much of anything in terms of updates on Maroney, or any other Patriot through the week other than whether or not he practiced, but it's worth noting that he was inactive for the second week in a row on Sunday against the Browns.

Update: 10/10: The media was present for stretching and some individual drills on Wednesday, but Maroney was apparently present. For what that's worth...

Update: 10/12: Head coach Bill Belichick said Friday that Maroney is improving, and was able to do a few things in practice. He added that the running back will likely be a game-time decision. Knowing how Belichick works, and considering how effective Maroney has been, you're better off playing it safe.

Update: 10/13: Belichick has termed Maroney a game-time decision, and he did make the trip to Dallas with the rest of the team, but at the Boston Herald is saying that Maroney will NOT play against the Cowboys. Sammy Morris is expected to get the start.

New Orleans Saints
Olindo Mare (K) 10/11: The Saints have been disappointed in kicker Olindo Mare's performance, which seems to be at least in part due to a groin injury he suffered in practice on October 4th. While his job itself is rumored to be at stake, Mare is hurt and says that he may not have the "power and pop to get the ball up in the air." He will be evaluated during practice on Thursday to determine if the team will need to bring in a kicker for this week's game. On Tuesday, the Saints worked out Mike Vanderjagt, Martin Gramatica, Billy Cundiff, Josh Huston, Seth Marler, Shane Andrus, and Brandon Page. Coach Payton said Wednesday that the plan is to see how Mare does Thursday, and make a decision.

Update: 10/12: The Saints decided to stick with Mare for the time being on Thursday.

Scott Fujita (LB) From Week 4 : Linebacker Scott Fujita has a sprained ankle that has forced him to miss Sunday's game.
Jason David (CB) From Week 4:Saints' starting cornerback Jason David is expected to miss at least another 3-4 weeks after suffering a fractured forearm in week 3 against the Titans. The Saints have not made a decision regarding David's replacement, but it is likely to be one of veteran Fred Thomas, Jason Craft, or rookie Usama Young.

New York Giants
Steve Smith (WR) 10/11: Receiver Steve Smith's shoulder has healed enough for him to put on the pads and begin practicing. He was on the field Thursday. If he plays this weekend, it will likely be very sparingly.

Update: 10/11: Smith had to slow down and eventually stop practicing on Thursday, and says that he's a week to week-and-a-half away from being able to go. It doesn't look like he will be on the field this weekend.

Osi Umenyiora (DE) 10/11: He's still expected to play on Sunday, but defensive end Osi Umenyiora sat out Thursday's practice session. He has been battling a knee injury.
Plaxico Burress (WR) From Week 4 : Burress has a badly sprained ankle, but is playing through the pain. He should not miss much, if any, game time. However, don't expect him to fully participate in many practices.

New York Jets
Erik Coleman (S) From Week 4: Safety Erik Coleman sat out Sunday's game with a concussion. Eric Smith started in his place.

Oakland Raiders
Gerard Warren (DT) 10/12: The Raiders' sack leader (he has three) will miss Sunday's game with a thigh injury. The injury is not expected to be a long-term issue.
LaMont Jordan (RB) From Week 4: (The Raiders had a Bye. The following is last week's IW entry.) Running back LaMont Jordan was clearly in tremendous pain after injuring his back Sunday. He was unable to walk under his own power, and was immediately carted to the locker room after making his way off the field. On Monday, coach Lane Kiffin said that X-rays on Jordan's back were negative, and that he was undergoing more tests. Dominic Rhodes is not available to re-join the team until next week, giving the Raiders time to evaluate Jordan's injury before deciding who to cut to make room to add Rhodes to the active roster.

Update: 10/3: Jordan was off the practice field with a member of the training staff on Wednesday. He looked much better than he did on Sunday as he worked on stepping over hurdles.

Update: 10/10: Jordan was at practice Wednesday, but his back is still an issue. His status for week 6 is up in the air.

Update: 10/11: Coach Kiffin says that Jordan practiced "some," but that he is a game-day decision. He has received treatment and a shot (anti-inflammatory). Jordan himself admitted Thursday that he has been dealing with back problems for years, but that this is the worst it has been. He adds that he has improved since the Miami game, and hopes for a dramatic improvement from the anti-inflammatory shot.

Update: 10/12: Coach Lane Kiffin said Friday that Jordan is doubtful to play, but that he will join the team on the trip and have a chance to be evaluated Sunday before the game.

Derrick Burgess (DE) From Week 4: (The Raiders had a Bye. The following is last week's IW entry.) Burgess' injured calf landed him on the inactive list again on Sunday. The Raiders have a bye week, so look for Burgess to try to get back on the field in week 6.

Update: 10/3: Burgess was on the field with his teammates Wednesday, but it's not known how much he participated in practice.

Update: 10/10: Coach Lane Kiffin has labeled Burgess doubtful to play in week 6 after his bum calf acted up in practice Wednesday.

Update: 10/11: Kiffin has confirmed that Burgess is not expected to play.

Update: 10/12: Burgess is doubtful, but will travel with the team and be evaluated before the game.

Josh McCown (QB)

From Week 4: (The Raiders had a Bye. The following is last week's IW entry.) McCown sat out Sunday after yet another injury finally managed to land him on the inactive list. Daunte Culpepper started against the Dolphins, and played well enough to threaten McCown's job. The QB drama in Oakland continues after the team's week 5 bye. On Monday, McCown was still wearing a walking boot.

Update: 10/3: McCown was still in the boot on Wednesday.

Update: 10/8: The Raiders have already named Culpepper the starter for week 6.

Philadelphia Eagles
Todd Herremans (LG) From Week 4: (The Eagles had a Bye. The following is last week's IW entry.) The Eagles announced Tuesday that starting left guard Todd Herremand underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today. A timetable for his return is not going to be set until next week. Scott Young is listed as the backup at left guard. Max Jean-Gilles and Nick Cole may also be in the mix if Herremans is unable to return in time for the Eagles' next game following the week 5 bye.

Update: 10/10: Herremans was held out of practice Wednesday, according to coach Andy Reid. Reid added that he expects Herremans will be ready to play this week.

Update: 10/11: Herremans was limited in practice Thursday, but said that he hopes to be ready to play by Sunday.

William Thomas (LT) From Week 4: (The Eagles had a Bye. The following is last week's IW entry.) Left tackle William Thomas sat out Sunday's blowout loss to the Giants. The Eagles' offensive line gave up 12 sacks, most of which came off the Eagles' left side, courtest of Osi Umenyiora (6 sacks by himself) and company.

Update: 10/10: Thomas was able to participate in practice on Wednesday.

Update: 10/11: Thomas fully participated in Thursday's practice. He should be on the field come Sunday, depending on how his body responds.

LJ Smith (TE) From Week 4: (The Eagles had a Bye. The following is last week's IW entry.) Smith sat out last week, and is still considered week-to-week. The Eagles have a bye, after which Smith said that he HOPES to be able to play in week 6.

Update: 10/10: Smith returned to practice Wednesday, but it's not clear how much he did on the field.

Update: 10/11: Smith participated in practice again Thursday, and looks likely to be available on Sunday.

Brian Dawkins (S) From Week 4: (The Eagles had a Bye. The following is last week's IW entry.) Dawkins missed Sunday's loss to the Giants with a stinger suffered in week 3.

Update: 10/10: Head coach Andy Reid said that Dawkins does not have any permanent damage from his stinger, but that he is still sitting out. Reid said that he wants to make sure Dawkins is "right" before he goes back on the field.

Update: 10/11: Dawkins did not practice, and the team has no timeframe for his return. Don't expect to see him on the field on gameday.

Update: 10/12: As expected, Dawkins has been ruled out for week 6.

Brian Westbrook (RB) From Week 4: (The Eagles had a Bye. The following is last week's IW entry.) Westbrook has a painful abdominal injury that forced him to miss Sunday's loss to the Giants. The muscle covering his rib is torn, and at times the rib will push through the tear, creating intense pain. The Eagles have a bye this week, after which Westbrook will have to check and see how he is healing. Upon hearing about the nature of the injury, it seems unlikely that Westbrook will be ready to handle the full workload by week 6, but we'll keep an eye out for any updates.

Update: 10/2: Head coach Andy Reid denied Tuesday that Westbrook's injury is worse than the team has revealed, which is being assumed as meaning the sideline report Sunday that maintained the injury is a tear in the muscle near the rib was incorrect because the team has called the injury an abdominal strain. However, when asked about time frame, Reid said only that he hopes it is not going to be a long-term problem.

Update: 10/10: It's not clear how much, but Westbrook returned to the practice field on Wednesday.

Update: 10/11: Westbrook participated for a second day in a row, and seems encouraged by his progress. It's uncertain whether or not he will be ready to play this weekend, though. There seems to be an air of optimism, but neither Westbrook or the team has said that he will be ready.

Lito Sheppard (CB) From Week 4: (The Eagles had a Bye. The following is last week's IW entry.) Sheppard and his sprained MCL sat out Sunday's game. He should be ready to return following the team's week 5 bye.

Update: 10/10: Sheppard practiced on Wednesday.

Update: 10/11: Sheppard was able to practice again Thursday, and looks like he has a good chance to be available. However, he said that he will not play if he feels that he is not 100% healed from his sprained MCL that he suffered in week 1.

Pittsburgh Steelers
Santonio Holmes (WR) 10/8: Starting receiver Santonio Holmes injured his hamstring during pregame warmups Sunday and did not play. Nate Washington and Cedrick Wilson received most of the WR looks.

Hines Ward (WR) From Week 4: Wide receiver Hines Ward was inactive Sunday with a sprained knee. The Steelers have a bye week coming in week 6.

San Diego Chargers
Vincent Jackson (WR) 10/10: A shoulder injury has Jackson sitting out of practice Wednesday, and will likely limit him for the rest of the week. However, he is not expected to miss Sunday's game against the Raiders.

San Francisco 49ers
Alex Smith (QB) From Week 4: Quarterback Alex Smith suffered a separated shoulder in Sunday's game. Further examination revealed tears to the AC and CC ligaments in his throwing shoulder. He will not require surgery, but is expected to miss another 3 or 4 weeks. The 49ers have a bye this week.

Update: 10/10: Smith seems to be improving well. On Wednesday, he was tossing the ball with Vernon Davis, and some of his "tosses" had some nice zip on them. He is expected to be listed as questionable for Sunday.

Vernon Davis (TE) From Week 4: Tight end Vernon Davis was sidelined Sunday with a sprained MCL in his right knee suffered in week 3. The 49ers have a bye in week 6.

Seattle Seahawks
Deion Branch (WR) 10/8: Wide receiver Deion Branch suffered a sprained foot in Sunday's loss to the Steelers, and is expected to sit out the next two weeks. With DJ Hackett also out, Nate Burleson and Bobby Engram will likely start.

St Louis Rams
Dante Hall (WR/KR) 10/8: Kick returner and wide receiver Dante Hall, who started at wideout for the injured Isaac Bruce on Sunday, has what coach Scott Linehan termed a "significant" left ankle sprain. He suffered the injury on a kickoff return.

Jerome Carter (S) 10/8: Safety Jerome Carter, starting for Corey Chavous, is expected to be lost for the season after suffering a broken foot in Sunday's game. Ron Bartell finished the game, and may get a start this week with Corey Chavous possibly missing the game.

Update: 10/10: Carter was placed on IR Wednesday.

Todd Johnson (S) 10/8: Todd Johnson's status for week 6 is "iffy" due to a sprained neck, according to head coach Scott Linehan.

Update: 10/10: Johnson lined up with the starters Wednesday.

Corey Chavous (S) From Week 4: Starting safety Corey Chavous sat out Sunday's game with a left pectoral injury. Jerome Carter started, but Ron Bartell will likely get the nod if Chavous has to sit out another week.

Update: 10/10: It seems likely that Chavous will sit out week 6 after missing practice Wednesday. The Chargers signed Bhawoh Jue to add some depth at the safety positions.

Raonall Smith (LB) From Week 4: Linebacker Raonall Smith sat out Sunday with a sprained knee.
Marc Bulger (QB) From Week 4: Quarterback Marc Bulger sat out week 5 with broken ribs, and is expected to sit again on week 6, leaving the starting job in the hands of Gus Frerotte.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Barrett Ruud (LB) 10/10: Linebacker Barrett Ruud was limited in practice Wednesday with a knee injury. He is not expected to miss this week's game, but Jeremiah Trotter may be activated for the first time this season to provide some insurance and perhaps some extra time on the sideline.

Update: 10/12: The Buccaneers listed Ruud as questionable on Friday.

Michael Pittman (RB) 10/8: Running back Michael Pittman suffered a badly sprained ankle in Sunday's win over the Saints, and will be sidelined at least 6-to-8 weeks. Earnest Graham replaced Pittman, and is the only viable option at the position for the time being. The Bucs have promoted Kenneth Darby from the practice squad.
Ike Hilliard (WR) 10/8: Wide receiver Ike Hilliard suffered an injury in Sunday's win over the Saints, but coach Jon Gruden did not elaborate on the nature of the injury. He said more would be known on Wednesday.

Update: 10/12: The Buccaneers listed Kelly as doubtful on Friday.

Tennessee Titans
Brandon Jones (WR) 10/12: Receiver Brandon Jones is dealing with a knee injury and has been unable to participate in practices this week. On Friday, he did some light running, but no cutting. Washington Redskins
Antwaan Randle El (WR) 10/8: Receiver Antwaan Randle El was having a good game before he injured his hamstring and sat out the second half of Sunday's win over the Lions.

Update: 10/11: Randle El sat out again on Thursday./td>

Marcus Washington (LB) 10/8: In the third quarter of Sunday's win over the Detroit Lions, linebacker Marcus Washington left the game with a moderate hamstring strain.

Update: 10/10: It looks like Washington will likely sit out Sunday's game. He missed practice Wednesday, and it was revealed that his hamstring injury is worse than Antwaan Randle El's. Coach Joe Gibbs indicated that he is hoping for a miracle that will allow Randle El to play this week, which indicates that Washington may not be in very good shape.

Update: 10/11: Washington sat out again Thursday.

Update: 10/12: The Redskins listed Washington as doubtful. Don't expect him to play.

Santana Moss (WR) From Week 4: The Redskins managed to get relatively healthy over their bye week, and responded by embarrassing the Lions. Santana Moss, however, remained sidelined with a groin injury. By most reports, Moss was moving around with so much difficulty last week that his availability for week 6 against the Packers is in doubt.

Update: 10/10: Moss was present for practice Wednesday, but it's not clear how much he participated or what he was able to do.

Update: 10/10: Moss practiced fully on Wednesday, and appears on track to play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

Phillip Daniels (DE) From Week 4: Daniels returned from his ankle injury, but left Sunday's game with a separated shoulder. He returned to the game after suffering the injury, but was seen wearing a sling on Monday. He will likely play against the Packers this week, but nothing is certain with a shoulder separation.

Update: 10/10: It's not certain at this point how much or how well he performed, but Daniels was reportedly at practice Wednesday.

Update: 10/10b: Updating the previous report, Daniels apparently did not practice on Wednesday. The team is preparing for Daniels to not be ready to play Sunday.

Update: 10/11: Daniels did not practice again on Thursday.

A-C Joint – An abbreviation for the Acromioclavicular joint, the A-C is the joint of the shoulder where the acromion process (of the scapula) and the distal end of the clavicle meet. The acromion is the upper-most part of the shoulder just above where there ball of the humerus meets the shoulder socket. Most shoulder separations occur at this point.

Avulsion Fracture - An avulsion fracture occurs when an injury causes a ligament or tendon to pull off a small piece of bone. This type of injury is often associated with an injury to the ligament or tendon itself. Avulsion fractures can cause intense pain, but rarely requires surgery to reattach the ligament or tendon, except in cases when a large portion of bone has been widely separated, or in the event of serious tendon or ligament damage. An avulsion fracture will normally heal on its own and will typically not cause any problems afterwards, although it may still be visible on an X-Ray.

Bruised Sternum – The sternum is often called the “breastbone”. It is the flat bone in the center of the chest that connects the first 7 sets of ribs and the clavicles. A bruised sternum can create intense pain with any movement, including throwing or even breathing. A significant injury to the sternum can also put pressure on the lungs and heart.

Collateral Ligament Injuries
MCL (Medial) and LCL (Lateral) Collateral Ligament Injuries - The collateral ligaments are located on the sides of the knee joint, with the MCL located on the inner side, and the LCL on the outer. They provide stabilization, especially for side-to-side motion. The LCL is very rarely injured, but the MCL can be damaged with relative ease. A hit to the outside of the knee while the lower leg is stationary can cause an injury. Surgery is generally required only in the case of a complete tear. Otherwise, rest, ice, compression, and elevation are considered the best means to recovery.

Cruciate Ligament Injuries
ACL (Anterior) and PCL (Posterior) Cruciate Ligament Injuries – The knee contains two cruciate ligaments and two collateral. The cruciate ligaments, called “cruciate” because they form a cross inside the knee, are the ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, and PCL, or posterior cruciate ligament. The ACL is located toward the front and prevents the shin bone from sliding forward beneath the thigh bone. A tear of the ACL typically requires reconstructive surgery. The PCL is injured much less frequently than the ACL, and an athlete can often return to action quickly with rehabilitation.

Concussion – A concussion is typically caused by some sort of severe head trauma. The brain will often be moved violently against the skull, creating a reaction similar to a seizure. The short term result of a concussion may include some bleeding on the brain, fluid drainage from the ears, nose, or mouth, vomiting, confusion and dizziness, and unconsciousness. A concussion will also often include some short-term memory loss, usually of events immediately before and after the event. For the long term, a concussion may cause persistent dizziness, confusion, and a greater likelihood to suffer additional concussions. In addition, repeated or excessively severe brain injuries can cause permanent brain damage and memory loss.

Deltoid Ligament - The deltoid ligament is a strong, flat, triangular band that attaches the medial, or inside, portion of the ankle to the foot. The deltoid ligament is covered by several tendons.

Hamstring Injuries – The hamstring is a series of long muscles that run down the back of the thigh. These muscles help control both hip and knee movement and are critical to running or even walking. Hamstring injuries will often be a relatively minor pull or strain, which typically take a week or two of rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to heal. More severe injuries can linger for 6 to 8 weeks, and a serious tear may require season-ending surgery. Hamstring injuries are particularly tricky because even minor pulls tend to linger and have been known to hamper an athlete for the entire season. This is because the hamstring is so commonly used and is involved with both the hip and the knee that it is extremely difficult for an athlete to give it proper treatment before returning to action.

Hip Flexor – The hip flexor is actually a muscle that helps the hip to bend forward. When an injury is referred to as a “hip flexor,” the player typically suffered a strain to the hip flexor muscle.

Hip Pointer – A hip pointer occurs when an athlete suffers an injury to the pelvis, specifically the iliac crest, caused by a direct blow to the area. The iliac crest is the bony portion of the pelvis, commonly called the “hip bone,” that can be felt along the waistline. While the term “hip pointer” usually refers to a bruise to either the bone or muscle, it can also be applied to more serious injuries such as a small chip or fracture, or a complete break. Typically, a player noted as having a hip pointer suffered a bruise to the crest that can be painful and limit mobility for a relatively short period of time.

Hyperextension - Extreme extension, or straightening, of a limb or body part.

Pectoral Muscle Tear – The pectoral muscle connects the ribs, clavicle, and upper arm with a large mass of muscle, commonly known as the chest. As it is instrumental to everything from moving the arm to turning the head, to simply breathing, a tear or rupture in this muscle mass will often result in a player being placed on injured reserve. A pectoral injury can take at least three or four months to heal.

Plantar Fascia Injuries – The Plantar Fascia is a thick, broad, inelastic band of fibrous material that attaches to the heel and fans out along the bottom of the foot to attach to the metatarsal bones around the ball of the foot. It is inelastic and typically drawn quite tight to maintain the foot’s arch. While an injury can occur anywhere on the plantar fascia, most are localized around point where it meets the heel and involve some amount of tearing.

Sprain – A sprain is a ligament injury that can cause pain, swelling, and bruising of a joint. While it is more common to sprain a knee, wrist, or ankle, a player can sprain other joints as well, including the foot, back, chest, etc... Sprains can often linger for several weeks and vary in severity from relatively mild, which will cause some manageable pain, to severe, which will create enough pain and swelling to limit mobility and keep a player out of a game. Certain positions are more limited by sprains than others. In the case of a wide receiver, a mid-foot sprain can be debilitating due to the sprinting and cutting the player must perform.

Stinger – A stinger, sometimes called a burner or pinched nerve, is an injury to the nerves of the neck or shoulder. The term “stinger” refers primarily to the symptoms an athlete experiences that include painful electrical sensations through one of the arms. Technically, a stinger is usually a spine injury, but never a spinal cord injury. As it does not involve damage to the spinal cord, paralysis is not a serious concern. While symptoms will often fade on their own, stingers do tend to recur and can result in persistent pain and weakness in the arm, which can result in lost playing time. A stinger can occur when a nerve is compressed by the head being forced backward and toward one side, or when the nerves in the neck and shoulder are over-stretched by the head being forced sideways.

Strain – A strain occurs when a muscle is overstretched and tears. Also called a “pulled muscle,” this type of injury, while painful, is fairly common. Unlike a complete muscle tear, in which the entire muscle group will often completely separate, a player can often play despite a strain. More se
