Cleveland Browns' wide receiver Joe Jurevicius underwent a second knee surgery this week after experiencing discomfort and swelling in the surgically-repaired joint.
No determination has been regarding Jurevicius' availability for the start of training camp. |
The San Diego Chargers on Tuesday signed two of their 2008 draft picks, running back Marcus Thomas and tackle Corey Clark, to four-year contracts.
A fifth-round selection, Thomas rushed for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior at Texas-El Paso.
Clark, who was taken in the seventh round, was a two-year starter at Texas A&M.
Thomas is a pounding back and could easily surprise Fantasy owners in 2008. There is a chance he will get a shot to be the goal line back. Keep your eye on him to see how the Chargers use him during training camp.
|
|
The Chicago Bears have agreed to a deal with 2nd round rookie RB Matt Forte on a 4-year contract. The terms of the contract have not been disclosed.
Forte is considered to be the starter for the Bears when training camp opens up, but temper some expectations with the fact that the Bears offense probably won't be very good this year.

Carolina Panthers' second-year receiver Dwayne Jarrett pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated on Monday, receiving a 30-day suspended sentence, revocation of his driver's license, $420 in costs and fines, and 24 hours of community service.
The DWI places Jarrett in the league's substance abuse program, but it is unclear whether there will be additional penalties coming from the NFL following the guilty plea. |
|
Tennessee Titan's DE Jevon "The Freak" Kearse was arrested early Sunday morning in Nashville for DUI.
Nashville police say Kearse was "speeding and swerving several times" while behind the wheel. Kearse reportedly exhibited red eyes, slurred speech, and his breath smelled like alcohol when an officer pulled him over.
This is Kearse's first strike, so the league will likely not take any action against him.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the Green Bay Packers are pursing a possible deal to acquire veteran defensive end Jason Taylor from the Miami Dolphins.
The Packers inquired about Taylor before the NFL Draft, but Miami's asking price was considered too high. The price has reportedly dropped, and Taylor is rumored to be pressing for a trade, so the Packers are exploring their options. |
|
Mascot Love Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Johnson will undergo surgery to have bone chips removed from his ankle. This is something that the team asked him to do as soon as the season ended and he is just doing it now.
The team cannot be happy that he waited, but he should be ready by training camp....Unless of course he decides he needs some extra time to rest (and not practice)...
|
Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker was found unconscious on a Las Vegas street Monday after apparently being the victim of a robbery.
Police spokesman Bill Cassell said in a statement that Walker was taken to a hospital with "significant injuries" after being found early Monday on a street off the Las Vegas Strip.
Cassell said Walker remained in fair condition at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.
Several sources have said that Walker had an "orbital fracture", which is a fracture of the bones around the eye socket, but this has not yet been confirmed.
This is not what Walker needed before the start of training camp, but we all hope that he is okay.

|
New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress showed up to the start of Giants manditory minicamp on Wednesday, but quickly proclaimed that he wasn't going to practice until the Giants negotiate a new contract with him.
Surprise, surprise, surprise the malcontent wants more money. I am getting so tired of this mentality. I say if he wants a new contract give it to him.......but with caveats.
Must attend ALL practice sessions.
Must keep his mouth shut.
Must keep out of jail.

The New Orleans Saints have agreed to a 6-year, $70 million contract extention with DE Will Smith on Wednesday. $26 million of the contract is guaranteed.

|
Week 4 wasn't as bloody as the previous week, but the 2007 season thus far has hardly been a healthy one.
This issue, we have significant injuries to keynote players like Cadillac Williams, Travis Henry, Rob Morris, LaMont Jordan, Alex Smith, Todd Heap, Troy Polamalu, and more. Stay tuned to Injury Watch during the week for frequent updates.
Last Updates:
| Arizona Cardinals |
|
| Levi Brown (OT) |
From Week 3 : Offensive tackle Levi Brown left has an ankle injury. There was no significant damage on his MRI, but Brown sat out Sunday's win against the Steelers.
Update: 10/3: Brown was on the practice field Wednesday, although he did not seem to be working very much with the first team.
|
| Anquan Boldin (WR) |
From Week 3: Boldin was held out of Sunday's game against the Steelers with a hip injury. He was hopeful that he'd be able to play, so it is likely that Boldin will be able to take the field in week 5.
Update: 10/3: Boldin's hip prevented him from practicing on Wednesday. A Monday exam revealed no damage to the bone, but coach Ken Whisenhunt said that he isn't sure if he partially tore or strained a muscle around the hip. Bryant Johnson will start if Boldin cannot play.
|
| |
|
| Atlanta Falcons |
|
| Jonathan Babineaux (DT) |
From Week 3: Babineaux sat out Sunday's game with stretched knee ligaments. |
| |
|
| Baltimore Ravens |
|
| Dan Cody (LB) |
10/3: Linebacker Dan Cody, currently on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, appeared to injure his left leg during workouts on Wednesday. Cody is recovering from offseason surgery on his right knee, but he did suffer a torn PCL in his left knee last year. |
| Todd Heap (TE) |
10/1: Tight end Todd Heap has a hamstring injury. Head coach Brian Billick said Monday that the injury is to the lower part of the hamstring, which is a little less likely to linger than if it were to the upper part. Daniel Wilcox is hurt (toe), so Quinn Sypniewski may see some extra game time on Sunday aganst the 49ers.
Update: 10/4: Heap and Wilcox both missed practice Wednesday and Thursday. Wilcox "guarantees" he will play, but Heap is still a question mark.
|
| Samari Rolle (CB) |
From Week 3 : Rolle missed the last two games due to a medical condition, the nature of which has not been revealed, and the effects of medication he is taking for the aforementioned condition.
Update: 10/4: Rolle was out Thursday morning running around and making cuts. He reportedly looked good, but was not wearing his shells and was carrying his helmet in his hand.
|
| Jonathan Ogden (OT) |
From Week 3: Ogden's turf toe forced him to miss another game Sunday. We will keep an eye on his status during the course of the week. He was participating in practice drills at the end of last week, so may give it a shot in week 5, if he doesn't aggravate the injury in practice. |
| |
|
| Buffalo Bills |
|
| Peerless Price (WR) |
10/6: Wide receiver Peerless Price will be placed on injured reserve after undergoing surgery to repair a disc in his neck, according to Bills' head coach Dick Jauron. Roscoe Parrish and Josh Reed will likely see a few more targets with Price sidelined. It is uncertain which one will step into the starting lineup, but Reed seems the most likely choice. |
| Ashton Youboty (CB) |
10/1: A twisted ankle suffered in the first quarter of Sunday's game has cornerback Ashton Youboty's status for week 5 uncertain. He appears likely to sit out until after the Bills' week 6 bye. He has not yet been ruled out, but the team is not optimistic that he will be available for this week's game. Jabari Greer will likely start if Youboty can't play Monday night.
Update: 10/3: The early word on Youboty is that he likely will not be available Monday night. As mentioned, Jabari Greer will start if that is the case.
Update: 10/3: Youboty watched practice on Wednesday.
Update: 10/5: On Friday, the Bills ruled Youboty out for Monday night's game.
|
| Jim Leonhard (S) |
10/1: Safety Jim Leonhard added yet another injury to the Bills' laundry list. He appears likely to sit out Monday night's game with a calf injury suffered late in Sunday's game against the Jets.
Update: 10/3: Is it expected that Leonhard's calf injury will cost him at least this week's Monday Night game. Journeyman Bryan Scott, who has bounced around several teams since entering the league five years ago and just signed with the Bills on September 12th, is likely to start with Leonhard sidelined.
|
| Kevin Harrison (LB) |
10/1: The Bills signed linebacker Kevin Harrison last week to bolster the depleted depth chart at the position. On Sunday, Harrison suffered a likely season-ending knee injury. With Ellison and Wire getting close to returning, the team will probably not pick up another linebacker.
Update: 10/5: Harrison has been placed on IR.
|
| Keith Ellison (LB) |
From Week 3: Linebacker Keith Ellison was seen during last week's practices wearing an air cast on his injured ankle andrunning laps. This is a good sign for Ellison and the Bills, in large part because the team is down to starting Leon Joe at weakside linebacker this week, the #5 on the initial depth chart.
Update: 10/3: Ellison is reportedly practicing on Wednesday.
Update: 10/4: Ellison appears likely to play Monday night, but is not slated to start. He will probably end up splitting time with Mario Haggan.
|
| J.P. Losman (QB) |
From Week 3 : Quarterback J.P. Losman suffered a sprained knee on the first series of week three's game, and will miss at least another week. Trent Edwards played well as the starter on Sunday.
Update: 10/5: The Bills ruled Losman out of Monday's game on Friday. Craig Nall will be the #2 quarterback behind Edwards.
|
| Coy Wire (LB) |
From Week 3: Wire was inactive again on Sunday. With a grade 2 sprain of the MCL, Wire is getting closer but seems likely to miss a little more time.
|
| |
|
| Carolina Panthers |
|
| Steve Smith (WR) |
10/6: Panthers' start receiver Steve Smith hurt his leg late in Friday's practice session. Head coach John Fox said afterwards that he does not believe that the injury is anything to be concerned about. |
| Nick Goings (RB) |
10/2: Running back Nick Goings was forced from Sunday's game with a concussion. His status for week 5 is uncertain, but the Panthers have brought RB Alex Haynes back to the practice squad so that he is close in case Goings can't play.
Update: 10/6: Goings has been listed as OUT for Sunday.
Update: 10/7: The Panthers activated Haynes on Saturday, hinting that the team may think Goings will miss more than just one week due to the concussion he suffered in week 4.
|
| Dan Morgan (LB) |
From Week 3 : We're SHOCKED that Dan Morgan is hurt.An ankle injury sidelined the Crystalline Linebacker on Sunday.
Update: 10/1: Morgan's injury is a partially torn Achilles' tendon. He doesn't think it will be a long-term injury (he called the tear "small"), but did indicate that he will not play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
|
| Jake Delhomme (QB) |
From Week 3 : Delhomme's elbow injury forced him to miss Sunday's game, but he was on the field as the third quarterback. With the way David Carr played, expect to see Delhomme back as soon as he is able to handle the load. Don't look for him this week, but he could be back as soon as week 6. The Panthers' bye week is week 7, so it wouldn't be out of the question for Carolina to be conservative and wait until after the bye to put him back into action.
Update: 10/2: The NFL Network's Adam Schefter insists that Delhomme's injury may be a much longer-term recovery than the Panthers are willing to admit at the moment. He indicates that surgery may be necessary, as well. While the Panthers are calling Delhomme day-to-day, Schefer notes that he's more like week-to-week or even month-to-month.
Update: 10/2: Delhomme has acknowledged that surgery is a possible necessity to repair his damaged elbow, but he is hopeful that an aggressive rehabilitation program will be sufficient.
|
| |
|
| Chicago Bears |
|
| Kevin Payne (S) |
10/1: Rookie safety Kevin Payne, who started his first career game on Sunday against the Lions, was placed on injured reserve Monday with a broken arm. |
| John Tait (OT) |
10/1: Offensive tackle John Tait left Sunday's game with a high ankle sprain, and left the stadium that night with a walking boot. He says that the boot makes the injury look worse than it is, but he was unable to return to the game after getting hurt early in the third quarter. He was replaced by John St. Clair.
Update: 10/5: Tait missed practice this week, including Friday, and will most likely not play on Sunday.
|
| Charles Tillman (CB) |
From Week 3 : Tillman was inactive Sunday with an ankle injury.
Update: 10/3: Tillman ran sprints on the side during Wednesday's practice, but reportedly did not look very good.
|
| Nathan Vasher (CB) |
From Week 3 : Cornerback Nathan Vasher sat out Sunday night's game with a partially torn groin. He is expected to miss a month or more. |
| Lance Briggs (LB) |
From Week 3 : Briggs ended up missing Sunday's game with a groin injury. He said earlier in the week that he was "fine." Expect him to be on the field against the Packers in week 5.
Update: 10/3: Briggs did sprints during practice Wednesday, and reportedly didn't look very good.
Update: 10/5: After missing practice for a court date Thursday, Briggs was present Friday in practice gear and with his helmet, but it's not yet known how much he participated. For what it's worth, Briggs received a sentence of 15 8-hour days of community service taking to students about safe driving when he pleaded guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident.
|
| Adam Archuleta (S) |
From Week 3 : Safety Adam Archuleta has a broken right hand, but planned to play Sunday against the Detroit Lions, anyway. He ended up inactive for the loss to the Lions.
Update: 10/3: Archuleta was on the practice field with his broken right hand on Wednesday.
|
| |
|
| Cincinnati Bengals |
|
| Chad Johnson (WR) |
10/3: Receiver Chad Johnson is nursing a sprained ankle that had him in a walking boot during practice on Wednesday. He was seen talking with offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski during drills. |
| Willie Anderson (RT) |
10/2: Right tackle Willie Anderson has been hampered by a foot injury since training camp that has limited him, and also suffered a knee injury against the Seattle Seahawks in week 3. After week 4's game against the Patriots, in which Anderson played only three snaps, he had a significant amount of trouble moving around and getting dressed. He is uncertain if the bye week will be enough time to be ready to play on October 14th in Kansas City. |
| Rudi Johnson (RB) |
From Week 3: Johnson was inactive Monday night with a hamstring injury. |
| Caleb Miller (LB) |
10/1: Linebacker Caleb Miller's lower back injury landed him on the inactive list for Monday night's matchup with the New England Patriots.
|
| Lemar Marshall (LB) |
From Week 3: Marshall played Monday, but left the game early in the first quarter with a left Achilles' tendon injury. He did not return to the game.
Update: 10/2: Marshall's torn Achilles' tendon landed him on injured reserve Tuesday. Linebacker Corey Mays, off waivers from the New England Patriots, was signed to the open roster spot.
|
| Ahmad Brooks (LB) |
From Week 3: Brooks missed Monday night's game against the Patriots with a groin injury. |
| Tab Perry (WR) |
FromWeek 3: Perry's hamstring forced him to miss week 4's game against the Patriots. |
| |
|
| Cleveland Browns |
|
| Kellen Winslow, JR (TE) |
From Week 3 : Tight end Kellen Winslow played well Sunday with a mild sublixation (separation) of the shoulder.
Update: 10/5: The Browns have listed Winslow as probable to play this week.
|
| Dave Zastudil (P) |
From Last Week: Zastudil was inactive again with a strained oblique. Scott Player started in his place.
Update: 10/5: Zastudil has been listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots. He practiced fully during the course of the week.
|
| |
|
| Dallas Cowboys |
|
| Anthony Henry (CB) |
10/1: Cornerback Anthony Henry suffered a right ankle injury late in the first quarter of Sunday's win over the Rams. He was able to leave the field under his own power, and X-rays were negative, but he did not return to the game. Terence Newman took most of the defensive snaps with Henry out.
Update: 10/2: Henry will miss the team's upcoming game against the Buffalo Bills with a high ankle sprain, and seems likely to miss a second week. There is a chance that Henry will end up sitting out up to four games.
|
| Bobby Carpenter (LB) |
From Week 3 :Linebacker Bobby Carpenter is playing with a partially torn quadriceps tendon. If he tears is further, it will end his season. |
| |
|
| Denver Broncos |
|
| Jason Elam (K) |
10/2: The Broncos will evaluate kicker Jason Elam later in the week due to a strained groin. |
| John Engelberger (DE) |
10/2: Defensive end John Engelberger hurt his shoulder Sunday, and will be re-evaluated later in the week. |
| Travis Henry (RB) |
10/1: It sounds like running back Travis Henry dodged a bullet Sunday. He said Monday that he felt a sharp pain in his knee, then his ankle when his foot caught in the turf at the RCA dome. X-rays have come back negative, and he thinks he will play in week 5 against the Chargers. Henry already has a sprained knee from a preseason game, and a sprained ankle from the season opener. If Henry can't play or is limited, Selvin Young would get the bulk of the workload.
Update: 10/3: Henry had an MRI that came back negative, which is great news for him. His knee and ankle are sore and he was held out of practice Wednesday, but at this point it appears that there is a good chance Henry will be able to play on Sunday.
Update: 10/5: Henry sat out practice again Thursday, and news broke of a failed drug test which came back positive for marijuana. If Henry plays this week, it just might be his last game for a while.
Update: 10/5b: For what it's worth, Henry insists that he is playing this week. Coach Shanahan agrees, noting that he will play if he is fully recovered from his knee and ankle injuries.
|
| Mike Bell (RB) |
From Week 3 : The Broncos placed Bell on the inactive list due to lingering effects of a concussion.
Update: 10/5: Bell fully participated in practice Thursday.
|
| Javon Walker (WR) |
From Week 3 : Receiver Javon Walker was hoping to play Sunday with inflammation in his knee, but the Broncos ended up putting him on the inactive list. He should return for week 5.
Update: 10/2: Walker assures everyone that his knee injury is not long-term, but admits that he isn't sure whether or not he will be able to practice or play this week against the San Diego Chargers. He does not think he will be able to practice until the fluid in his knee is reduced.
Update: 10/3: As expected, Walker did not practice on Wednesday.
Update: 10/5: Walker did not practice on Thursday.
Update: 10/5b: Walker is considered doubtful to play on Sunday. Coach Mike Shanahan said that Walker will not play, and will need a couple more weeks of recovery time. Brandon Stokley will start.
Update: 10/7: The Broncos downgraded Walker to OUT for Sunday. Walker said Saturday that he will be back for the October 21st game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
|
| John Lynch (S) |
From Week 3 : Lynch's groin was not healed sufficiently to allow him to play against the Colts on Sunday.
Update: 10/2: Lynch is making progress and will be re-evaluated later in the week.
Update: 10/3: Lynch declared himself "back" after returning to practice on Wednesday. He intends to play on Sunday.
Update: 10/7: Sure enough, Lynch appears slated to start Sunday.
|
| |
|
| Detroit Lions |
|
| Jason Hanson (K) |
10/1: Kicker Jason Hanson fractured his left wrist while trying to stop Devin Hester in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Bears. The injury is not expected to keep Hanson from performing his kicking duties. |
| Damien Woody (G) |
From Week 3 : Woody's injured ribs landed him on the inactive list Sunday. He was expected to play, and should be okay for week 5.
Update: 10/3: Woody fully participated in practice Wednesday.
Update: 10/5: Damien Woody is healthy enough to play, but has lost his starting job to Stephen Peterman, announced the Lions on Thursday.
|
| Alex Lewis (LB) |
From Week 3 : Linebacker Alex Lewis was inactive Sunday with an injured hamstring.
Update: 10/3: Lewis did not practice on Wednesday.
|
| Calvin Johnson (WR) |
From Week 3 : Rookie wideout Calvin Johnson landed hard on his back during week 3's loss to the Eagles, and suffered some severe bruising. He was inactive on Sunday, but should be suffiently healed to play in week 5.
Update: 10/3: Johnson was limited in practice Wednesday.
Update: 10/5: Johnson was limited during practice all week, and has been listed as questionable for Sunday's game.
|
| Kalimba Edwards (DE) |
From Week 3: Edwards sat out again Sunday with an ankle injury.
Update: 10/3: Edwards was limited in practice on Wednesday.
Update: 10/5: The Lions listed Edwards as questionable for week 5.
|
| |
|
| Green Bay Packers |
|
| Will Blackmon (CB) |
10/4: Cornerback and kick returner Will Blackmon broke his foot in practice Wednesday. The severity is not certain, but it is the same foot he broke last year that prevented him from practicing from May 21, 2006 until October 10, 2006. |
| Nick Collins (S) |
10/1: Free safety Nick Collins has a left knee injury that is expected to keep him out of practice until Friday to give him some extra rest. It is not expected that the injury is serious enough to force him to miss any game time. |
| Brandon Jackson (RB) |
From Week 3 : A shin sprain prevented rookie running back Brandon Jackson from playing in Sunday's game against the Vikings. Vernand Morency saw most of the action. He was sore on Monday, and will likely be limited on Wednesday.
Update: 10/4: It appears that Jackson will not be available for Sunday's game against the Bears.
|
| |
|
| Houston Texans |
|
| N.D. Kalu (DE) |
From Week 3 : Kalu was inactive Sunday with a hand injury. He tried to play with the injury the first few weeks, but it was not healing well and it was determined that Kalu will sit out until his hand is sufficiently improved. That means Kalu will likely miss a couple more weeks, at least.
Update: 10/4: Kalu reportedly practiced on Wednesday, indicating that the training staff may feel comfortable enough with his progress to let him try to play again. Then again, it may also just mean that Wednesday's practice are light enough that they weren't worried about him.
|
| Jerome Mathis (WR) |
From Week 3 : X-rays came back negative last week, but a leg injury still forced receiver Jerome Mathis to the inactive list for week 4. |
| Ahman Green (RB) |
From Week 3: Ahman Green missed Sunday's game against the Falcons with a knee injury. An MRI last week showed no significant damage, and it was thought that Green had a chance to play in week 4, but he ended up on the inactive list. He should be okay to play in week 5. Ron Dayne started, and did a decent job.
Update: 10/6: Green increased his workload on Friday, prompting head coach Gary Kubiak to say that his performance was very encouraging. Green is a gametime decision, but appears ready to play. Watch the inactive lists on Sunday.
|
| Jacoby Jones (WR) |
From Week 3 : Rookie Jacoby Jones got his first NFL start in week 3, and finished the game with a separated shoulder that forced him to sit out Sunday's loss to the Falcons, and is expected to sideline him for another week or two.
Update: 10/6: As expected, Jones does not appear ready to play on Sunday.
|
| Andre Johnson (WR) |
From Week 3: Johnson's sprained knee cost him a second game on Sunday. He was questionable to start the week, but the Texans ruled him out for game 4 against the Falcons in the middle of the week. His status is uncertain for week 5.
Update: 10/4: Johnson appears slated to sit out week 5 due to his sprained knee.
|
| |
|
| Indianapolis Colts |
|
| Freddy Keiaho (LB) |
10/5: Linebacker Freddy Keiaho missed practices all week with concussion symptoms. As of Friday afternoon, he may not have even been tested, and will likely have to pass a concussion test before he is allowed to play on Sunday. Don't count on it - Keiaho will probably be sidelined for Sunday's game against the Titans. |
| Rob Morris (LB) |
From Week 3 : Morris was active Sunday, but an apparently serious knee injury forced him from the game. Coach Tony Dungy said that Morris' injury is to a tendon in his left leg, but did not indicate whether or not it would be season-ending. ESPN's John Clayton is reporting, however, that Morris tore his ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. Rocky Boiman is the likely option to step into Morris' starting role. |
| Marvin Harrison (WR) |
10/1: Marvin Harrison left Sunday's game with a bruised knee. The injury isn't expected to be serious, but Harrinson's status for week 5 is currently up in the air.
Update: 10/5: Head coach Tony Dungy said Friday that a many of a group of starters listed as questionable are "unlikely" to play. That list includes Marvin Harrison, who is dealing with his left knee injury. Harrison is one who probably will end up sitting, but watch the inactive lists, just in case.
|
| Joseph Addai (RB) |
10/1: Running back Joseph Addai hurt his shoulder in the second half of Sunday's win over the Broncos.
Update: 10/5: Addai has been listed as questionable on the Colts' injury report, and there is apparently a decent chance he will not play. Contrary to some other reports surfacing, Addai has not been ruled out of Sunday's game. However, head coach Tony Dungy indicated that there is a decent likelihood that Addai will sit out Sunday against the Titans. He is dealing with a chest soreness that originated from his shoulder and did not practice on Friday. The injury is similar to the one he had during the playoffs last year. Dungy said that he played then because it was "do or die," and not week 5. The safe choice would be to bench Addai, as he is supposedly not expected to play - but do keep an eye on the inactive lists and pregame reports. This could very easily be a nice bit of gamesmanship by Dungy and company.
|
| Bob Sanders (S) |
10/1: Sanders bruised his ribs in the second half of Sunday's game. The injury is not thought to be serious enough to foce him to miss any more game time.
Update: 10/5: Sanders is listed as questionable on the Colts' injury report with bruised ribs, and was part of a group of starters that coach Tony Dungy addressed by saying "I would say it's unlikely many of them will play." Sanders certainly has not been ruled out, but it would be best to keep an eye on the inactive lists Sunday to be sure.
|
| |
|
| Jacksonville Jaguars |
|
| Khalif Barnes (OT) |
From Week 3 : [Jaguars were on a bye in week 4. The following is week 3's IW report:]Offensive tackle Khalif Barnes sprained his right ankle early in Sunday's game. He was replaced by Mo Williams, and was able to return later. He flew home Sunday with a walking boot on his injured ankle. |
| John Henderson (DT) |
From Week 3: [Jaguars were on a bye in week 4. The following is week 3's IW report:]Henderson sat out week 3's game with a head injury (concussion). He should be okay to go in week 5, but we'll keep an eye on him. |
| Josh Scobee (K) |
From Week 3: [Jaguars were on a bye in week 4. The following is week 3's IW report:]Scobee's quadriceps strain is still expected to sideline him a bit longer. John Carney may just be giving the team something to think about in the mean time... |
| |
|
| Kansas City Chiefs |
|
| Eddie Kennison (WR) |
From Week 3: Kennison is getting closer to returning from his hamstring injury, but was still inactive on Sunday. Rookie Dwayne Bowe has been playing well with Kennison out. |
| |
|
| Miami Dolphins |
|
| Donovin Darius (S) |
10/6: The Miami Dolphins ruled Darius OUT on Saturday for Sunday's game with a calf injury. Cameron Worrell is expected to be the fifth starting safety this season for hte Dolphins. |
| Travares Tillman (S) |
10/3: Safety Travares Tillman underwent knee surgery on Monday. The exact nature of the injury to his left knee is unclear, but Tillman will miss some time, if not the remainder of the season. Stay tuned. In the mean time, Donovin Darius and Lamont Thompson will handle Tillman's safety duties. |
| Vonnie Holliday (DT) |
10/1: Defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday is expected to miss at least a game or two after suffering a fracture in his lower right leg. Coach Cam Cameron called it a "slight fracture" on Monday and noted that it should not affect the defensive tackle long-term. |
| Channing Crowder (LB) |
10/1: Linebacker Channing Crowder, starting for Zach Thomas, is day-t0-day after injuring his ankle Sunday. |
| Zach Thomas (LB) |
From Week 3: Thomas was held out another week as he recovers from effects of a concussion. He is expected to be ready to play in week 5. |
| |
|
| Minnesota Vikings |
|
| Ray Edwards (DE) |
10/1: Defensive end Ray Edwards left Sunday's game against the Packers with a bruised hip. The injury is not expected to cause him to miss any time. |
| Tarvaris Jackson (QB) |
From Week 3: Jackson was held out again Sunday, but should be ready to go after the team's week 5 bye. Kelly Holcomb hasn't exactly been tearing up the league, so Jackson should be able to at least compete for the job. However, it's not a sure thing at this point that he will start.
Update: 10/3: Head coach Brad Childress says that he thinks Jackson will play on Sunday against the Bears in week 6.
|
| |
|
| New England Patriots |
|
| Laurence Maroney (RB) |
10/1: We don't expect to hear much of anything in terms of updates on Maroney through the week other than whether or not he practiced, but it's worth noting that he was inactive for Monday night's game against the Bengals with a groin injury. |
| |
|
| New Orleans Saints |
|
| Scott Fujita (LB) |
10/4: Linebacker Scott Fujita has a sprained ankle that has forced him to miss practice both Wednesday and Thursday. Head coach Sean Payton said that Fujita is feeling better than he was on Wednesday, but that he will have to practice at some point before he can play. If he is unable to go, Brian Simmons and Troy Evans are both in line to play at Fujita's strong side linebacker position.
Update: 10/6: Fujita is being termed a gametime decision by coach Sean Payton. He initially sprained his ankle on September 24th, and has not been able to practice until Friday. Payton said that Fujita felt "a little better, but it is what it is."
|
| Jason David (CB) |
From Week 3 : [Saints were on a bye in week 4. The following is week 3's IW report:]Saints' starting cornerback Jason David is expected to miss at least a month (4-6 weeks) after suffering a fractured forearm Monday night against the Titans. The Saints have not made a decision regarding David's replacement, but it is likely to be one of veteran Fred Thomas, Jason Craft, or rookie Usama Young. |

|
| New York Giants |
|
| Osi Umenyiora (DE) |
10/4: Defensive end Osi Umenyiora apparently hurt his knee on Sunday, in addition to registering six sacks on the day. It sounds minor, and is not expected to prevent him from playing, but he was held out of practice Wednesday to receive treatment.
Update: 10/5: Osi rode the stationary bike again on Friday, but insists that he will play come Sunday. It's not really up to him, but chances are that he is correct.
|
| Chase Blackburn (LB) |
10/4: Linebacker Chase Blackburn was injured Sunday in the New York Giants' locker room following the team's win over the Philadelphia Eagles. A reporter bumped into him while he had a cotton swab (q-tip) in his ear, and nearly ruptured his eardrum. The ear reportedly bled where the Q-tip was jammed into the wall of his ear canal, and he lost hearing, in addition to experiencing some significant pain. Doctors expect Blackburn's hearing to return slowly as the blood dissipates. Blackburn should be able to play on Sunday. |
| Sam Madison (CB) |
10/1: Cornerback Sam Madison suffered a bruised A-C joint in his shoulder on Sunday. He stayed in the game, which is a good sign, but will undergo a battery of tests to determine the extent of the injury. |
| Chris Snee (OL) |
10/1: Guard Chris Snee had an MRI Monday due to a sore knee.
Update: 10/3: The MRI on Snee's knee showed no damage. He is sore, but practicing and should be ready to play come Sunday.
|
| Plaxico Burress (WR) |
From Week 3 : Burress has a badly sprained ankle, but is playing through the pain. He should not miss much, if any, game time. However, don't expect him to fully participate in many practices.
Update: 10/5: Burress has sat out of practices this week, as expected, but says that he will play on Sunday.
|
| Brandon Jacobs (RB) |
From Week 3: Jacobs is almost ready to return from his sprained knee. Late last week, he was thought to be a possibility to play in week 4, but his return has been pushed back. At this point, he is expected to return week 5. |
| |
|
| New York Jets |
|
| Erik Coleman (S) |
10/4: Safety Erik Coleman has a concussion that he suffered in Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills, but did not mention to team officials until Monday. He appears likely to sit out this week's game. If Coleman is unable to play, Eric Smith will get the start. |
| |
|
| Oakland Raiders |
|
| LaMont Jordan (RB) |
10/1: Running back LaMont Jordan was clearly in tremendous pain after injuring his back Sunday. He was unable to walk under his own power, and was immediately carted to the locker room after making his way off the field. On Monday, coach Lane Kiffin said that X-rays on Jordan's back were negative, and that he was undergoing more tests. Dominic Rhodes is not available to re-join the team until next week, giving the Raiders time to evaluate Jordan's injury before deciding who to cut to make room to add Rhodes to the active roster.
Update: 10/3: Jordan was off the practice field with a member of the training staff on Wednesday. He looked much better than he did on Sunday as he worked on stepping over hurdles.
|
| Derrick Burgess (DE) |
From Week 3: Burgess' injured calf landed him on the inactive list again on Sunday. The Raiders have a bye week, so look for Burgess to try to get back on the field in week 6.
Update: 10/3: Burgess was on the field with his teammates Wednesday, but it's not known how much he participated in practice.
|
| Josh McCown (QB) |
From Week 3: McCown sat out Sunday after yet another injury finally managed to land him on the inactive list. Daunte Culpepper started against the Dolphins, and played well enough to threaten McCown's job. The QB drama in Oakland continues after the team's week 5 bye. On Monday, McCown was still wearing a walking boot.
Update: 10/3: McCown was still in the boot on Wednesday.
|
| |
|
| Philadelphia Eagles |
|
| Todd Herremans (LG) |
10/2: The Eagles announced Tuesday that starting left guard Todd Herremand underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today. A timetable for his return is not going to be set until next week. Scott Young is listed as the backup at left guard. Max Jean-Gilles and Nick Cole may also be in the mix if Herremans is unable to return in time for the Eagles' next game following the week 5 bye. |
| William Thomas (LT) |
From Week 3 : Left tackle William Thomas sat out Sunday's blowout loss to the Giants. The Eagles' offensive line gave up 12 sacks, most of which came off the Eagles' left side, courtest of Osi Umenyiora (6 sacks by himself) and company. |
| LJ Smith (TE) |
From Week 3: Smith sat out last week, and is still considered week-to-week. The Eagles have a bye, after which Smith said that he HOPES to be able to play in week 6. |
| Brian Dawkins (S) |
From Week 3: Dawkins missed Sunday's loss to the Giants with a stinger suffered in week 3. |
| Brian Westbrook (RB) |
From Week 3: Westbrook has a painful abdominal injury that forced him to miss Sunday's loss to the Giants. The muscle covering his rib is torn, and at times the rib will push through the tear, creating intense pain. The Eagles have a bye this week, after which Westbrook will have to check and see how he is healing. Upon hearing about the nature of the injury, it seems unlikely that Westbrook will be ready to handle the full workload by week 6, but we'll keep an eye out for any updates.
Update: 10/2: Head coach Andy Reid denied Tuesday that Westbrook's injury is worse than the team has revealed, which is being assumed as meaning the sideline report Sunday that maintained the injury is a tear in the muscle near the rib was incorrect because the team has called the injury an abdominal strain. However, when asked about time frame, Reid said only that he hopes it is not going to be a long-term problem.
|
| Lito Sheppard (CB) |
From Week 3: Sheppard and his sprained MCL sat out Sunday's game. He should be ready to return following the team's week 5 bye. |
| |
|
| Pittsburgh Steelers |
|
| Bryant McFadden (CB) |
10/2: Cornerback Bryant McFadden is unlikely to play in week 5 after suffering a high ankle sprain on Sunday. He is considered doubtful to see the field against the Seattle Seahawks.
Update: 10/3: McFadden may miss as much as a month with his high ankle sprain.
|
| Troy Polamalu (S) |
10/1: Safety Troy Polamalu left Sunday's game against the Cardinals in the third quarter after suffering an abdominal injury. He did not return to the game.
Update: 10/2: Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Polamalu may be limited in practice this week, but should be fine to play on Sunday against the Seahawks.
|
| Casey Hampton (DT) |
10/1: Nose tackle Casey Hampton left Sunday's game against the Cardinals with a hamstring injury suffered in the first half. He did not return.
Update: 10/2: Head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Hampton should be fine to play on Sunday, although he may be limited in practice this week.
|
| Hines Ward (WR) |
From Week 3 : Wide receiver Hines Ward was inactive Sunday with a sprained knee. It was initially reported as a bone bruise, but reports later in the week were calling it a sprain. His status for week 5 is not yet certain. The Steelers have a bye week coming in week 6.
Update: 10/5: Ward has officially been ruled OUT for week 5.
|
| Matt Spaeth (TE) |
From Week 3: As expected, Spaeth sat out again Sunday with a thigh bruise. |
| |
|
| San Diego Chargers |
|
| Buster Davis (WR) |
10/3: Coach Norv Turner said Wednesday that he is not sure if rookie receiver Buster Davis will be available Sunday after suffering an ankle injury in week 4.
Update: 10/5: Davis' sprained ankle may force him to miss Sunday's game against teh Denver Broncos. He has been listed as questionable, and will be a gametime decision.
|
| Matt Wilhelm (LB) |
From Week 3: Wilhelm sat out Sunday's loss to the Chiefs with a calf injury. He should be close to returning to the lineup, possibly even this week. |
| |
|
| San Francisco 49ers |
|
| Alex Smith (QB) |
10/1: Quarterback Alex Smith suffered a separated shoulder in Sunday's game. Further examination revealed tears to the AC and CC ligaments in his throwing shoulder. He will not require surgery, but is expected to miss 4- to 6-weeks.
Update: 10/3: A source reportedly told ESPN's Ed Werder that an MRI on Smith's injured shoulder showed serious damage to the ligaments that would likely force the quarterback to undergo immediate surgery to repair the damage. Smith is seeking a second opinion from renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews before making the decision to go under the knife, which would likely cost him the remainder of the season.
Update: 10/3: The 49ers are disputing the aforementioned ESPN report. They say that Smith's lab results have been sent to Dr. Andrews, but that Smith is not scheduled to meet with him personally. Also, the team claims that there is no plan for Smith to undergo surgery. He reportedly tore two ligaments in his throwing shoulder, but has no other damage to the muscles or collarbone. It is still unclear, however, how long he will be out.
Update: 10/3b: Dr. Andrews has confirmed that Smith has a Grade 3 separation and does not need surgery. Expect him to miss at least 3-4 weeks, and possibly a little longer - but he will play again this season.
Update: 10/5: Smith had some good news this week, although it still seems unlikely that he will play in the next 3 weeks. However, with the good news on the nature and extent of his injury, Smith shed his sling on Friday and was tossing the ball to himself underhanded. No, he's not launching 60-yard bombs, but it's still a good sign.
|
| Vernon Davis (TE) |
From Week 3: Tight end Vernon Davis was sidelined Sunday with a sprained MCL in his right knee suffered in week 3. The 49ers have a bye in week 6. Davis will sit out week 5 and try to return for week 7. |
| |
|
| Seattle Seahawks |
|
| Ray Willis (OT) |
10/1: Reserve offensive tackle Ray Willis will sit about six weeks with a sprained knee. |
| Josh Wilson (CB) |
10/1: Reserve cornerback Josh Wilson will miss a week or two with an ankle injury. The Seahawks are short on cornerbacks on the depth chart. |
| Alvin Pearman (RB) |
10/1: Running back and special teams specialist Alvin Pearman tore a knee ligament during Sunday's name and will miss the remainder of the season. |
| DJ Hackett (WR) |
From Week 3: Hackett was inactive again Sunday, and is still expected to miss several more weeks with a high ankle sprain. Head coach Mike Holmgren said that Hackett could return to duty around the time of Seattle's bye week, which is October 28th. |
| |
|
| St Louis Rams |
|
| Corey Chavous (S) |
10/1: Starting safety Corey Chavous left Sunday's game in the fourth quarter with a strained left pectoral muscle.
Update: 10/3: As of Wednesday, safety Corey Chavous is expected to miss Sunday's game with a pectoral injury. Jerome Carter and Todd Johnson worked at strong safety Wednesday.
Update: 10/5: According to the St Louis Post Dispatch, Chavous has been ruled out of Sunday's game. Jerome Carter is expected to start.
|
| Raonall Smith (LB) |
10/1: Linebacker Raonall Smith was forced from Sunday's game against the Cowboys with a sprained knee. |
| Leonard Little (DE) |
10/1: A sprained knee forced defensive end Leonard Little from Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He underwent an MRI on Monday, but results were not immediately available. |
| Adam Goldberg (OL) |
Starting right tackle Adam Goldberg has a torn MCL in his left knee and will be sidelined a month. The injury, suffered early in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Cowboys, will not require surgery.
Update: 10/5: The St Louis Post Dispatch reports that the Rams will place Goldberg on injured reserve, ending his season. He will be the third starting offensive lineman to hit the Rams' IR, joining Orlando Pace and Mark Setterstrom.
|
| Marc Bulger (QB) |
From Week 3 : Quarterback Marc Bulger has been playing with two broken ribs. We're not sure if that's why he played so lousy on Sunday, but he was pretty bad. He's not expected to miss any gametime.
Update: 10/3: ESPN is reporting that Bulger has been ruled OUT for week 5. Gus Frerotte will start.
|
| Steven Jackson (RB) |
From Week 3: Running back Steven Jackson suffered a partially torn groin in week 3, and sat out Sunday's loss to the Cowboys. He has already been ruled out of week 5's game against the Cardinals. Brian Leonard did okay in relief, but was no threat to take the starting job. |
| Isaac Bruce (WR) |
10/1: Bruce hurt his hamstring Sunday and left his "guaranteed win" in the third quarter. He did not return.
Update: 10/5: Receiver Drew Bennett has been given the start ahead of Bruce for this week's game. The St Louis Post Dispatch is reporting that Bruce has been ruled out.
|
| |
|
| Tampa Bay Buccaneers |
|
| Brian Kelly (CB) |
10/7: The Buccaneers have activated cornerback Torrie Cox, releasing safety Donte Nicholson to make room. Cox's activation may be a clue that injured cornerback Brian Kelly's groin may well prevent him from playing on Sunday. He is listed as questionable on the injury report. |
| Cadillac Williams (RB) |
From Week 3: Cadillac Williams was playing Sunday against the Panthers in spite of his sore ribs, but suffered a severe knee injury. Williams' season is over with a torn patellar tendon. With successful rehabilitation, he could possibly be ready to return for the start of the 2008 season. On the flip side, there is a chance he will never be able to play again. |
| Luke Petitgout (OT) |
10/1: The Buccaneers lost offensive tackle Luke Petitgout for the season with a torn ACL. |
| |
|
| Tennessee Titans |
|
| Craig Hentrich (P) |
From Week 3: - [Titans were on a bye in week 4. The following is week 3's IW report:] Hentrich was inactive Monday night with a back injury. Josh Miller punted in his place.
Update: 10/2: Hentrich was cleared to practice Tuesday, and is considered day-to-day. The Titans will keep Josh Miller until they know that Hentrich is in the clear.
|
| |
|
| Washington Redskins |
|
| Clinton Portis (RB) |
10/1: Head coach Joe Gibbs revealed Monday that running back Clinton Portis has a recurrence of the tendinitis in his knee that sidelined him for much of the offseason and preseason. Gibbs said that he expects Portis to play this week.
Update: 10/2: Redskins' team trainer Bubba Tyer said Tuesday that Gibbs was incorrect when he said that Portis was dealing with tendinitis again. Tyer indicated that Portis has a bruised knee and a minor (Grade 1) sprain, and that neither issue is expected to prevent him from playing on Sunday. He is day-to-day for practice, but should be available on game day.
Update: 10/3: Portis said Tuesday afternoon that he hurt both his knee and ankle in the first half of last Sunday's game against the Giants. While he will likely be limited all week in practice, the initial feeling is that he will be on the field on Sunday.
|
| Roger 'Rocky' McIntosh (LB) |
From Week 3: [Redskins were on a bye in week 4. The following is week 3's IW report:] McIntosh left week 3's game in the fourth quarter with pain in both shoulders. He underwent an MRI on Monday, and has been ordered to have no contact for two weeks with a pinched nerve. The bye week comes at the right time, but he will likely still be a question mark for the team's next game.
Update: 10/2: Team trainer Bubba Tyer said Tuesday that McIntosh is scheduled to practice as normal.
|
| Fred Smoot (CB) |
From Week 3: [Redskins were on a bye in week 4. The following is week 3's IW report:] Cornerback Fred Smoot did not play week 3 due to a hamstring injury. Smoot says that his hamstring is feeling better, and that he expects to be fine after the bye week.
Update: 10/2: Smoot's hamstring is expected to limit him in practice, but should not prevent him from playing on Sunday after missing the last two games.
|
| Santana Moss (WR) |
From Week 3: [Redskins were on a bye in week 4. The following is week 3's IW report:] Santana Moss strained his groin Sunday. Fortunately, he will have an extra week to heal as the Redskins head into their bye week.
Update: 10/1: On Monday, Moss said that he is not sure his groin will be healed in time for Sunday's game. On Monday, the Redskins signed free agent receiver Keenan McCardell.
Update: 10/2: Bubba Tyer said Tuesday that Moss has not yet run since hurting his groin, and that Moss is the least likely to play Sunday of all the Redskins' injuries.
Update: 10/3: Moss tried to do some jogging during Wednesday's practice, but didn't last very long before he had to stop and ice down his injured groin. Shortly afterwards he made his way to the training room. He looks like a long shot to be able to play in week 5, and may even be hurt badly enough to place week 6 in jeopardy.
Update: 10/5: Moss missed praactice again Friday and is doubtful to play this week.
|
| Phillip Daniels (DE) |
From Week 3: [Redskins were on a bye in week 4. The following is week 3's IW report:] Daniels played, and left the field temporarily in the third quarter with a sprained ankle, but he returned and should be fine for the team's next game after the bye.
Update: 10/2: Daniels is expected to practice as normal, according to team trainer Bubba Tyer.

Medical DictionaryA-C Joint – An abbreviation for the Acromioclavicular joint, the A-C is the joint of the shoulder where the acromion process (of the scapula) and the distal end of the clavicle meet. The acromion is the upper-most part of the shoulder just above where there ball of the humerus meets the shoulder socket. Most shoulder separations occur at this point.
Avulsion Fracture - An avulsion fracture occurs when an injury causes a ligament or tendon to pull off a small piece of bone. This type of injury is often associated with an injury to the ligament or tendon itself. Avulsion fractures can cause intense pain, but rarely requires surgery to reattach the ligament or tendon, except in cases when a large portion of bone has been widely separated, or in the event of serious tendon or ligament damage. An avulsion fracture will normally heal on its own and will typically not cause any problems afterwards, although it may still be visible on an X-Ray.
Bruised Sternum – The sternum is often called the “breastbone”. It is the flat bone in the center of the chest that connects the first 7 sets of ribs and the clavicles. A bruised sternum can create intense pain with any movement, including throwing or even breathing. A significant injury to the sternum can also put pressure on the lungs and heart.
Collateral Ligament Injuries
MCL (Medial) and LCL (Lateral) Collateral Ligament Injuries - The collateral ligaments are located on the sides of the knee joint, with the MCL located on the inner side, and the LCL on the outer. They provide stabilization, especially for side-to-side motion. The LCL is very rarely injured, but the MCL can be damaged with relative ease. A hit to the outside of the knee while the lower leg is stationary can cause an injury. Surgery is generally required only in the case of a complete tear. Otherwise, rest, ice, compression, and elevation are considered the best means to recovery.
Cruciate Ligament Injuries
ACL (Anterior) and PCL (Posterior) Cruciate Ligament Injuries – The knee contains two cruciate ligaments and two collateral. The cruciate ligaments, called “cruciate” because they form a cross inside the knee, are the ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, and PCL, or posterior cruciate ligament. The ACL is located toward the front and prevents the shin bone from sliding forward beneath the thigh bone. A tear of the ACL typically requires reconstructive surgery. The PCL is injured much less frequently than the ACL, and an athlete can often return to action quickly with rehabilitation.
Concussion – A concussion is typically caused by some sort of severe head trauma. The brain will often be moved violently against the skull, creating a reaction similar to a seizure. The short term result of a concussion may include some bleeding on the brain, fluid drainage from the ears, nose, or mouth, vomiting, confusion and dizziness, and unconsciousness. A concussion will also often include some short-term memory loss, usually of events immediately before and after the event. For the long term, a concussion may cause persistent dizziness, confusion, and a greater likelihood to suffer additional concussions. In addition, repeated or excessively severe brain injuries can cause permanent brain damage and memory loss.
Deltoid Ligament - The deltoid ligament is a strong, flat, triangular band that attaches the medial, or inside, portion of the ankle to the foot. The deltoid ligament is covered by several tendons.
Hamstring Injuries – The hamstring is a series of long muscles that run down the back of the thigh. These muscles help control both hip and knee movement and are critical to running or even walking. Hamstring injuries will often be a relatively minor pull or strain, which typically take a week or two of rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) to heal. More severe injuries can linger for 6 to 8 weeks, and a serious tear may require season-ending surgery. Hamstring injuries are particularly tricky because even minor pulls tend to linger and have been known to hamper an athlete for the entire season. This is because the hamstring is so commonly used and is involved with both the hip and the knee that it is extremely difficult for an athlete to give it proper treatment before returning to action.
Hip Flexor – The hip flexor is actually a muscle that helps the hip to bend forward. When an injury is referred to as a “hip flexor,” the player typically suffered a strain to the hip flexor muscle.
Hip Pointer – A hip pointer occurs when an athlete suffers an injury to the pelvis, specifically the iliac crest, caused by a direct blow to the area. The iliac crest is the bony portion of the pelvis, commonly called the “hip bone,” that can be felt along the waistline. While the term “hip pointer” usually refers to a bruise to either the bone or muscle, it can also be applied to more serious injuries such as a small chip or fracture, or a complete break. Typically, a player noted as having a hip pointer suffered a bruise to the crest that can be painful and limit mobility for a relatively short period of time.
Hyperextension - Extreme extension, or straightening, of a limb or body part.
Pectoral Muscle Tear – The pectoral muscle connects the ribs, clavicle, and upper arm with a large mass of muscle, commonly known as the chest. As it is instrumental to everything from moving the arm to turning the head, to simply breathing, a tear or rupture in this muscle mass will often result in a player being placed on injured reserve. A pectoral injury can take at least three or four months to heal.
Plantar Fascia Injuries – The Plantar Fascia is a thick, broad, inelastic band of fibrous material that attaches to the heel and fans out along the bottom of the foot to attach to the metatarsal bones around the ball of the foot. It is inelastic and typically drawn quite tight to maintain the foot’s arch. While an injury can occur anywhere on the plantar fascia, most are localized around point where it meets the heel and involve some amount of tearing.
Sprain – A sprain is a ligament injury that can cause pain, swelling, and bruising of a joint. While it is more common to sprain a knee, wrist, or ankle, a player can sprain other joints as well, including the foot, back, chest, etc... Sprains can often linger for several weeks and vary in severity from relatively mild, which will cause some manageable pain, to severe, which will create enough pain and swelling to limit mobility and keep a player out of a game. Certain positions are more limited by sprains than others. In the case of a wide receiver, a mid-foot sprain can be debilitating due to the sprinting and cutting the player must perform.
Stinger – A stinger, sometimes called a burner or pinched nerve, is an injury to the nerves of the neck or shoulder. The term “stinger” refers primarily to the symptoms an athlete experiences that include painful electrical sensations through one of the arms. Technically, a stinger is usually a spine injury, but never a spinal cord injury. As it does not involve damage to the spinal cord, paralysis is not a serious concern. While symptoms will often fade on their own, stingers do tend to recur and can result in persistent pain and weakness in the arm, which can result in lost playing time. A stinger can occur when a nerve is compressed by the head being forced backward and toward one side, or when the nerves in the neck and shoulder are over-stretched by the head being forced sideways.
Strain – A strain occurs when a muscle is overstretched and tears. Also called a “pulled muscle,” this type of injury, while painful, is fairly common. Unlike a complete muscle tear, in which the entire muscle group will often completely separate, a player can often play despite a strain. More severe strains, and strains of important muscle groups, can hold a player out until the injury heals. Surgery is not a serious consideration to repair a strain.
Turf Toe – Turf Toe is an injury, perhaps a bruise or sprain, to the joint that connects the big toe to the rest of the foot. The injury is usually caused by severe or excessive upward bending or hyperextension of the big toe. Common symptoms are pain, swelling, and tenderness, and severe cases will often cause restriction of motion and bruising. Surgery is very rare, but the healing process can be lengthy. A turf toe injury will often bother an athlete all season, but will not end his year.
