Another week down. More players down! It seems like every NFL player needs to have their physical therapist sitting on the bench with them! For this reason working the waiver wire is crucial to your team’s success each and every week. These are the players you should target for week 8.
Chris Hester of Rotohog.com is here to give you his choices.
Low Risk
Jesse Chatman RB MIA: With starting RB Ronnie Brown out for the season, the 0-7 Miami Dolphins will now rely on the speedy Chatman for the remainder of the season. Chatman has never had the chance to be the #1 guy but he should get the majority of the touches from here on out. Rookie Lorenzo Booker may be activated and steal a carry or two, as will Patrick Cobbs, but expect Jesse to be the work horse for the rest of the season in Miami.
Kevin Walter WR HOU: Taking full advantage of the opportunity he has seen since Andre Johnson went down with injury; Walter has over 400 yards receiving and 1 touchdown in his last four games. Johnson is getting closer to returning, and once he does you should expect to see a drop in Walter’s numbers. One would imagine, however, that Kevin has shown enough to the Texans coaching staff that he will still get targeted a fair number of times the remainder of the season.
Ike Hilliard WR TBB: Hilliard has always been a good possession receiver and is once again getting a chance to show it. With injuries to others he has basically moved into the #2 role and has 323 yards and a TD in his last 4 games, but if you are in a PPR league he becomes a very good buy as he has 28 receptions in those same 4 games. Tampa goes against a stout Jacksonville defense in week 8, but then he gets rewarded Arizona and Atlanta in his next two.
Brandon Stokley WR DEN: Stokley was always the third option in the Indianapolis passing attack, and for a while he was the same in Denver. But now he finds himself in the first chair playing with the big boys, and so far he has held his own. Against a very tough Pittsburgh secondary he caught 5 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. He gets to face the secondaries of Green Bay, Detroit and Kansas City in the next three and should improve on those numbers.
Donald Lee TE GBP: Lee has at least 3 catches in each game this year and with Bubba Franks out with injury, Lee is a good pickup. What makes him a Low Risk pickup is the fact that he is going against Denver. Denver is great against opposing WRs, but they have serious problems versus good TEs. Both Heath Miller and Dallas Clark had 2 TDs against them. Look for Lee to have a big game this week.
Worth a Risk
Kellen Clemens QB NYJ: The Jets have announced that Chad Pennington will get the start this week, but it was anything but a ringing endorsement. With the team pretty much done for the year, it is only a matter of time before they make the switch. With offensive weapons all around him and a young, improving offensive line, Clemens will have a nice opportunity to produce if he starts.
Roddy White WR ATL: Well, FINALLY an Atlanta Falcons WR showed that they had a pulse. It’s been years in the making, but watch out, Roddy White may have finally arrived on the scene! Sunday against the Saints White caught 8 balls for 110 yards and a touchdown, his second 100+ yard game of the season. The team is on a bye this week and will probably come out of it with Joey Harrington back in the saddle, but White is a must pick up.
Glenn Martinez WR DEN: During the preseason I thought that Brian Clark was the unknown receiver that would vault up the depth charts for Denver, but he was since dropped, and all of a sudden Glenn Martinez is that guy. With Javon Walker out indefinitely and Rod Smith most likely not seeing the field again, and now up-and-coming rookie Brandon Marshall getting arrested for DUI, the path is suddenly clear for Martinez to be a major contributor. He has good hands and quickness will make a good spot starter for the rest of the season.
Ted Ginn Jr. WR MIA: The Dolphins have thrown in the towel for this season, so all the youngsters will get a big look going forward. Many are not sold on Ginn being an every down receiver, but Miami must see something the rest of us don’t. Add in the fact that he was a first round pick and you can be sure he will get a ton of chances to prove us all wrong.
Kyle Brady TE NEP: Brady will never get you 5-6 receptions in a game, or most likely not even 50 yards, but he has a TD in each of the last two games. As long as Ben Watson is hurt, Brady is a good play in TD heavy leagues.
Will Heller TE SEA: Heller is another getting a chance due to injury (go figure…), as starter Marcus Pollard is likely to need surgery on his knee. Heller has some real tough match-ups coming up which keeps his risk value high, along with the fact that he is on bye, but Hasselbeck will still use his TE.
Highly Risky
Kyle Boller QB BAL: Ok maybe highly risky is not stating it properly, but that is our lowest shelf so we will use it. Boller is finally getting a chance to prove everyone wrong, but so far he hasn’t done a great job of it. He only has 1 touchdown in his last 2 starts and those were against St Louis and Buffalo, not the staunchest of defenses. Now add to that the fact that he is on bye this week then faces Pittsburgh on his return and it makes this pick hazardous to the health of your team.
Sage Rosenfels QB HOU: The Texans had to feel like they were in an old Western flick Sunday afternoon, “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly”...and most of that was just the 4th quarter! Stepping in for the injured Matt Schaub, Sage threw for four touchdown passes in the 4th quarter to give Houston a late lead (“the good”). Unfortunately for Texans fans Kerry Collins found Roydell Williams for a late 46 yard pass to help set up Rob Bironas for the game winning filed goal (“the bad”). Rosenfels, who as I mentioned had 4 touchdown passes, also committed 4 turnovers during his time on the field (“the ugly”) when he threw three interceptions and lost one fumble. Overall Sage had very nice numbers filling in for Schaub and he may be worth a look if Matt is unable to go next weekend against the San Diego Chargers.
Quinn Gray QB JAC: Gray is about as risky a pick as can be. When he came in last game against Indy he looked like a mouse caught in the headlights. He completed only 9 of 24 passing attempts, plus threw 2 interceptions and got caught for a safety. He looks likely that he will get the start this week against Tampa Bay. Risky, very risky.
Roydell Williams WR TEN: The Titans are having a bad time trying to find viable receivers, but in week 7 Williams stepped up with 5 receptions for 124 yards. Beware though, as there are still a ton of questions for this offense. There is a chance that Brandon Jones is back this week, as will be Vince Young. Hard to christen Williams a savior after one big game, but if you need to take a shot…
Byes: Cardinals, Falcons, Ravens, Cowboys, Chiefs, Seahawks
