We based this draft on the presumption that there will be no trades (as trades are just too random to predict). Please feel free to tell us we are crazy - we are ready for it! This is only the first 10 picks, with more to come...
3. CLEVELAND - After his showing at the combine, and the fact that they only signed Jamal Lewis to a 1 year contract, RB Adrian Peterson is clearly the pick here. Peterson jumped out in front of the other RBs with his 4.37 40 run at the combine.
4. TAMPA BAY - There seems to be much consensus over this pick, as many believe that WR Calvin Johnson is the only call here for the Bucs, and we have to go along with them. Johnson has the chance to be a stud from day one. He is big, fast and has extremely good hands.
5. ARIZONA - When Arizona realizes that OT Joe Thomas is still available at this pick, they will run, not walk, to the podium and grab him. Their offensive line play has been horrendous the last few years and Thomas has a chance to make an immediate impact. Beware, though, that Thomas is not the strongest OT, benching a sub-par 28 reps of 225 lbs at the combine. Furthermore, his relatively short arms will not allow him to get a lot of separation in run blocking. He is still a major upgrade for them.
6. WASHINGTON - The Redskins desperately needed help in their secondary going into the off-season, and so far have managed to acquire Fred Smoot and are hunting for Dre Bly. So it seems as if they are trying to cover their DB needs before the draft, which allows them to tighten up their defensive line on draft day. DE Gaines Adams should be the pick here. He is an outstanding pass rusher, and since he will be playing in a division where the QBs can be rattled by a strong rush, this is the right place for him.
7. MINNESOTA - IF Minnesota can make it to the podium on time - and that is a big IF - then they will pick S Laron Landry. Their secondary was a shambles last year and Darren Sharper will be 32. Landry should step right in and be an upgrade from day 1.
8. HOUSTON - This pick is anybody's guess. There are so many rumors floating around the Texans: Carr possibly gone, Plummer coming out of retirement to play for them, Domanick Williams (Davis) possibly out for another season... We think the biggest need will be at OT. So in that vein, the Houston Texans choose OT Levi Brown. He is versatile enough to play at either tackle spot, or even at guard. 9. MIAMI - Miami is another team with multiple positions to fill, but we think they will look to a very young DT named Amobi Okoye from Louisville. He is only 19 but he really impressed many NFL coaches and scouts during the interview process of the combine.Â
10. ATLANTA - Atlanta will be glad to see that the player they wanted all along is still there at #10. They rush to make the call, and pick up DT Alan Branch of Michigan. Branch is a huge interior linemen that will help clog the run lanes and will occasionally get to the QB, too. He will be an instant upgrade to Grady Jackson and could start from day 1.
