Jets Sign TE Keller To Multi-Year Deal

ImageThe Jets signed TE Dustin Keller, the #30 pick, to a multi-year deal on Friday.

Keller will have to battle vets Chris Baker and Bubba Franks, plus several other players to get much playing time in 2008. The good news is that none of them are very good.

Ravens Sign QB Flacco
ImageThe Baltimore Ravens and Joe Flacco, the team's first-round draft pick, agreed in principle Wednesday night to a five-year deal expected to reach $30 million.

Flacco, the former University of Delaware standout, is expected to earn over $30 million which includes a guaranteed money of $8.75 million, according to his agent, Joe Linta.

This is good news for the young signal caller if he has any chance of starting in week 1. He is still a longshot sure, but they didn't move back up in the first to get him for nothing.

Cowboys Sign FS Hamlin To 6-Year Deal

ImageThe Dallas Cowboys have signed FS Ken Hamlin to a new 6-year contract worth $39 million, including $15 million guaranteed.

Hamlin had his finest season as a pro in 2007, including his first trip to the Pro Bowl. This really locks up a good secondary for Dallas for the long term, especially if Adam Jones actually gets to play AND keep his nose clean.

Bears Agree With RB Jones For 1-Year Deal

ImageThe Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with FA RB Kevin Jones on a 1-year, $605, 000 contract according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network.

Well this definitely puts a little hesitation in drafting Matt Forte now. Forte is still the future, but Jones plays almost the same type of game as Forte, so this will almost certainly means he splits carries, a t the elast, with Jones for 2008.

Colts QB Manning To Miss 4-6 Weeks

ImageColts QB Peyton Manning will miss 4-6 weeks after having a bursa sac removed from his left knee. That timetable means he would miss at least the start of training camp. The Colts open camp on July 25 and break camp on Aug. 15.

"The procedure was routine. The Colts' medical staff expects a full and complete return to action," said Colts president Bill Polian.

He will most likely miss a good portion of training camp, but if anyone can get away with missing some time, Peyton is that guy. This is nothing to be concerned about, Manning is still the #2 QB in fantasy circles.

RB Henry Fails Another Drug Test
ImageFormer Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry has tested positive for marijuana again, reports Fox 31 Sports in Colorado.

An NFL source told the television station late Thursday about the positive test and said Henry likely would be suspended for a year for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

This is the second time that he faces a 1-year suspension for drugs. He beat the last one on a technicality, but you can bet the league covered their bases on this one. If he is indeed suspended for a year, it may be his death knell in the NFL.

Jaguars WR Jones Arrested
ImageJacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones was arrested early Thursday morning in his former college town and charged with felony possession of cocaine. Jones, 25, and two other men were arrested just before 1:00 a.m. on Thursday after police said they observed Jones cutting up cocaine with a credit card in a car.

A first-round draft pick by the Jaguars in 2005, Jones has been a disappointment as a wide receiver in the NFL. The 6-foot-6, 238-pound wideout had 24 catches for 317 yards and four touchdowns last season, and has 101 catches for 1,392 yards and 13 scores in three seasons with Jacksonville.

Just another player with loads of talent that couldn't control themselves. The writing was on the wall that the team would cut him before this, now it just becomes when.

Ex-NFL Player Kiel Killed In Car Crash
ImageEx-San Diego Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was killed in a car smash, police said Saturday. He was 27.

San Diego police said Kiel's body was thrown from his 2004 Chevrolet sedan, which crashed into a wall.

Kiel, who was driving alone after leaving a party, was conscious when paramedics arrived at the crash. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

A 2003 second-round National Football League entry draft selection, Kiel appeared in 59 games over parts of four seasons with the Chargers.

Browns' WR Jurevicius Undergoes 2nd Knee Surgery

Cleveland Browns' wide receiver Joe Jurevicius underwent a second knee surgery this week after experiencing discomfort and swelling in the surgically-repaired joint.

No determination has been regarding Jurevicius' availability for the start of training camp.

Chargers Sign RB Thomas, T Clark
Image The San Diego Chargers on Tuesday signed two of their 2008 draft picks, running back Marcus Thomas and tackle Corey Clark, to four-year contracts.

A fifth-round selection, Thomas rushed for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior at Texas-El Paso.

Clark, who was taken in the seventh round, was a two-year starter at Texas A&M.

Thomas is a pounding back and could easily surprise Fantasy owners in 2008. There is a chance he will get a shot to be the goal line back. Keep your eye on him to see how the Chargers use him during training camp.

Start - Sit Week 14 Print E-mail
Written by Eric Cunningham
Sunday, 09 December 2007

Sorry for the late posting of this article, but I have been dealing with a death to one of my best friend's family.

Eric once again gives you his thoughts on those strong, and not so strong plays of the week.

Here are your Start-Sit selections for week 14.

We’re going to try something different this week and go quick hits style.  That’s right, rapid fire picks and a lot more players!!! Please, feel free to let me know if you love it or hate it: both the style and the picks.

QUARTERBACK

Start ‘Em

Matt Hasselbeck, SEA
Between the controversy at RB between Maurice Morris and Shawn Alexander, and the injury status of most of his receiving core, you’d think Hasselbeck was having a down year. Quite the contrary as he has thrown 2 TDs in 6 of his last 7 games while averaging just over 275 yards through the air.

Derek Anderson, CLE
He gets the Jets this week! That should be enough, but it’s not. It’s worth noting that before his 2 interceptions in the pass-fest in the desert, Anderson had thrown 3.6 TD per INT since week 6. Is anybody wondering what Charlie Frye thinks of all this? Crazy.

David Garrard, JAX
Ok, so he finally threw an INT. You know what? I don’t care. The guy is a legit QB who keeps his team in it to win it. Fantasy-wise, he’ll do the same for you. His match up against Carolina this week should be exceptional. The Panthers have allowed QBs to score 9 TDs against them over the past 3 weeks.

Donovan McNabb, PHI
If A.J. Feeley doesn’t stink up the joint last week, I’m not typing these few sentences, but since he did, Donovan McNabb is a likely starter this week and worth a play for week 14. Do you remember what he did in his last game before the injury? 251 yards, 4 TDs, and no INTs. Keep an eye on his status throughout the week, but he’s likely to play and play well against the division rival Giants.

Deep Start ‘Em

Tarvaris Jackson, MIN
The San Francisco 49ers defense has allowed an average of 2 passing TDs against over the past 4 weeks. Jackson, who clearly isn’t a star QB, has the luxury of a dominant running game and offensive line. Jackson, who has thrown 3 of his 5 TD passes over the past two weeks, is worth a look in deep leagues.

Sage Rosenfels, HOU
The man who will forever be remembered in Titans’ hearts for nearly beating them TWICE hasn’t had the strongest season outside of that match up. However, he may be handed the reigns for the remainder of the season after Matt Schaub dislocated his shoulder. Against Tampa Bay, a breakout performance is unlikely, but Rosenfels will have Andre Johnson at his disposal for a full game for the first time all season.

Kellen Clemens, NYJ
Cleveland’s defense isn’t very good at all, and Clemens and the Jets just put 40 up on an equally defensively inept team in Miami. The Browns have allowed a passing TD in every game this year, and have allowed more than one in 8 of 12. This will be Clemens first multi-TD game of his career.

Brodie Croyle, KC
This is for your super deep league: 18+ teams, possibly as few as 16. Denver really hasn’t been that effective against the pass recently allowing Vince Young to throw for over 300 yards and Josh McCown to throw 3 TDs within 3 weeks of each other. Croyle’s raw talent falls somewhere in between that of those two. Expecting 200 yards and a score is reasonable.

Vinny Testeverde, CAR
Did you know that until last week, Jacksonville had faced 5 straight QBs that attempted 40 passes against them? Last week, Manning threw for 4 TDs on only 29 attempts. The moral of the story, teams will pass and pass often against the Jaguars. Testeverde is next in line.

Marc Bulger, STL
The Rams had enough faith in Bulger to avoid signing Todd Bouman this week. You can interpret whether that is good or bad news on your own. I think, if I could take the starting QB against the Cincinnati defense every week I would do it, regardless of who he was. For the record, that would net me 2,948 yards, 23 TDs, 14 INTs, with a 67% completion percentage.

Sit ‘Em

Ben Roethlisberger, PIT
Roethlisberger is a gamer. He’s going to go out on Sunday at play his heart out against New England. He very well might pull the upset off and lead the Steelers to a victory over the undefeated Patriots, but it won’t be statistically fantastic. The Steelers are going to pound the run, so Big Ben should ride your bench.

Eli Manning, NYG
Ok, honestly, I don’t think he is as bad as he has looked recently, but 2 TDs and 6 INTs over the past two games is too much to ignore. Philadelphia’s defense is solid and will cause problems for the younger Manning who has thrown 8 INTs in the past 6 games against the Eagles. Don’t expect a bounce back.

Brett Favre, GB
Oakland has been especially tough on QBs this season, and with Favre banged up a fantasy friendly outing isn’t likely. Expect Ryan Grant to get a lot of looks in this game. The Raiders haven’t been able to stop anyone on the ground, and the Packers will take advantage.

Vince Young, TEN
Were his 2 TD passes last week a sign of change for the better or an abnormal bucking of the trend? More than likely, it was the latter. He had thrown for 2 total TDs in the 7 games prior. Don’t expect a huge outing against the Chargers.

RUNNING BACK

Start ‘Em

Ryan Grant, GB
He’s legit: 402 yards and 4 TDs over the past 4 weeks. Add that up with the putrid Oakland run defense and Grant is staring dead red at another fantasy explosion. 100+ yards and at least one score are a gimme.

Steven Jackson, STL
He’s back, healthy, and just in time for the fantasy playoffs. Jackson has had 3 straight 90+ yard rushing games with 4 TDs in 5 weeks. He’s also caught 3 passes in each of the last 4 weeks for those PPR fans.

Adrian Peterson, CHI
Formerly known as “the other Adrian Peterson,” but soon to be known only as, Adrian Peterson. Again, for fans of PPR leagues, Peterson is a gem (12 receptions over the past 2 games). He’s yet to rush for 70 yards in a game, but his total yards are always solid. Expect another solid outing against Washington on Thursday.

Thomas Jones, NYJ
Against Cleveland, everyone is a starter. Despite his phobia of scoring TDs, last week he managed to find the end zone for the first time. This week he will likely pile up the yards and have another crack at a score. The Browns have allowed 432 rushing yards over the past 4 weeks.

Willie Parker, PIT
New England has had a real tough time recently against two teams that have run the ball right at them and played a safe, ball controlled passing attack. The Steelers can pound the run with the best of them, and they’ve got more talent passing than the Eagles and Ravens combined. If Parker finishes with anything less than 125 yards on the ground I would be stunned.

Deep Start ‘Em

Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX
You have to take the good with the bad. Jones-Drew has scored at least one TD in each of his past 4 games. He also has combined for 95 yards rushing over the past 3 games. It’s not quite what we were looking for out of a 2nd round pick, but he’s good enough as a deep league option or a flex back at this point.

Maurice Morris, SEA
Running back by committee. Those are the worst words in fantasy football. Trust me, a committee, in fantasy sports or otherwise, is never a good thing. Nonetheless, even as part of the committee, Morris broke a long TD run making him a worthwhile play last week. This week, against Arizona, he’ll likely get a bit more of the load.

DeShaun Foster, CAR
Jacksonville is a tough defense to run on, but recently Foster has contributed enough to make himself an interesting play on a week to week basis. He’s a great flex play. Expecting 50-60 rushing yards with a handful of receptions is reasonable.

Laurence Maroney, NE
Another high pick gone wrong, Maroney has really killed a lot of fantasy players this season. Last week, he was the savior for a New England offense that really had a problem. He’s almost a sure bet to NOT score a TD, but he’s actually not too bad in yardage and PPR leagues.

Fred Jackson, BUF
He gets to play Miami. What more needs to be said? How about this: he totaled 151 total yards with a score last week against Washington, and yards will be much easier to come by against the ‘Fins.

Sit ‘Em

Justin Fargas, OAK
I really like what Fargas has been doing, but he is going up against one of the toughest run defenses in the league this week in Green Bay. Without much in the passing game to take pressure off of him he’ll struggle.

Frank Gore, SF
Minnesota is another ridiculously tough run defense and Gore has only been mediocre to best aside from one outing against Arizona since week 3. He’s only gotten 20 carries twice this season. There are many better options.

Kolby Smith, KC
He’s really gotten things clicking over the past two weeks, but when he goes up against Denver this week, Smith’s fantasy output may not be as respectable. Denver had solidified its run defense over the past few weeks until Fargas broke them wide open last week. Expect the Broncos to get their act together and shut down Smith.

Rueben Doughns, NYG
Droughns is not good. He’s averaging 2.3 YPC over the past three games and is only will move back with Brandon Jacobs playing. The Eagles will have an easy time with him.

WIDE RECEIVER

Start ‘Em

Tory Holt, STL
It’s been quite the ride for Holt in 2007, but now he’s finally started to pull it all together. He’s posted 3 100+ yard outings in his last 5 games and the Cincinnati pass defense is, let’s say, less than spectacular. Play Holt like it’s 1999.

Kevin Curtis, PHI
In the past 4 weeks, the Giants have allowed 3 100+ yard receivers. Curtis struggled against the G-men in their last outing, but this time will be different. He’s turned into one of the more consistent receivers in PPR leagues. He may not break 100 yards, but he’ll certainly push the envelope.

Laveranues Coles, NYJ
He was back and showing his value to the Jets WR core last week with a 5 reception, 69-yard day. Those are the minimum expectations against Cleveland. The Browns have already allowed 16 TDs to go to WRs.  Coles would be the best bet this week.

Bobby Engram, SEA
With Hackett out for the foreseeable future, Engram is the newest go to guy. He’s averaged 7.6 receptions over his past 7 games and has totaled 53 yards or more in all but one game. He’s quietly become one of the most consistent receivers in the league.

Larry Fitzgerald, ARZ
Keep an eye on his injury status throughout the week, but Fitzgerald is looking more and more like he’ll take the field on Sunday. If he does, he’ll have a solid outing against division rival Seattle. He’s averaged 6.5 receptions and 80.0 yards against the Seahawks in his last 4 outings against them.

Deep Start ‘Em

Hines Ward, PIT
Playing New England represents an automatic bench for most players, but with “the blueprint” that has been laid out over the past few weeks, you can bet the Steelers will be using Ward as a short control receiver far more than any of their deep threats. Ward could expect 7+ receptions with 70-90 yards.

Steve Smith, CAR
I’ve lost all faith in him at this point and mark him as a “Sit ‘Em” each week for a while now. His 8 reception 64 yard outing last week will not phase me, but I’ve bumped him up because Carolina will be throwing the ball like crazy against Jacksonville. As I mentioned earlier, the Jaguars had faced 5 straight QBs who aired it out 40+ times until last week. Testeverde will attempt at least 35 passes this week, and that means more opportunities for Smith.

Reggie Williams, JAX
This guy continues to get no credit. It’s simple: 6 TDs in 6 separate games along with 190 yards in his past 3 games. He’s a great WR option in TD-heavy scoring systems.

Sidney Rice, MIN
Another great PPR option is Rice, who has made 17 receptions over the past 5 weeks with 3 TDs in 3 separate games. He’s Reggie Williams lite. Against San Francisco this week, he’ll be great.

Justin Gage, TEN
He’s emerged as the WR to own in Tennessee. There were so many Titans’ WRs to take a flier on early in the season, and those who selected Gage are winning out now. Over the past 4 weeks, he’s made 22 receptions, 318 yards, and 2 TDs. If he is still available in your league he needs to be on your roster for the playoff stretch.

Ted Ginn, MIA
In leagues where you receive credit for return yards, Ginn is one of the best bargains around. Tacking on the special teams play, Ginn is starting to make more and more of an impact with John Beck in the new look Dolphins offense. If you’re in a huge league (18+ teams) where 3-5 receptions and 30-50 yards is worth something, he’s your man.

Sit ‘Em

Deion Branch, SEA
Sure, he’s the “number one” WR in Seattle now, but it doesn’t mean he’s Hasselbeck’s number one target. That’s Bobby Engram now. Branch is a glorified slot receiver who is being asked to play above his head.

Greg Jennings, GB
Jennings is a must start every week, but for leagues that only start 1 or 2 WRs, a benching is worth considering for this week. Oakland’s pass defense is one of the league’s best, and Favre is coming into the game banged up. Use with caution.

Donte Stallworth, NE
He’s the forgotten man in New England. He’s on 6th the depth chart behind Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Jabar Gaffney, Ben Watson, and Laurence Maroney. He’ll snag a few catches, but against Pittsburgh, he’ll be lucky to get 40 yards.

Santonio Holmes, PIT
Despite the ankle injury, the Steelers are not a stupid team. They have seen New England get beat up two weeks in a row by running the ball and throwing short passes. When Baltimore and Philadelphia tried to go deep, they made mistakes. Santonio, if he does play, won’t get the numbers we’re used to seeing.

TIGHT END

Start ‘Em

Marcedes Lewis, JAX
I doubted him last week. This week, I’m a believer again. Garrard apparently loves Lewis who now has 11 receptions and 2 TDs in the past 3 weeks.

Dallas Clark, IND
Clark has improved statistically each week since missing week 10. Baltimore was pumped up for New England, but expect them to fall off and Dallas Clark to take advantage.

Alge Crumpler, ATL
Hold on! Crumpler is still playing this season? Man alive, we had been waiting for a performance like last week’s all season long. Hopefully the Falcons’ QB de jour will look to him as often.

Deep Start ‘Em

Tony Gonzalez, KC
He’s really good. 10 receptions for 140 yards last week was out of control. However, you’d have to go back to 2003 to find a game where Gonzalez actually produced against Denver. He’s still worth starting in deep leagues, but shallow leagues can find other options.

Ben Watson, NE
He dropped quite a few big passes for New England last week, but at least Tom Brady continues to look his way. Against Pittsburgh, the middle of the field should be cluttered up.

Sit ‘Em

Owen Daniels, HOU
He’s really suffered without Matt Schaub in the lineup. Sage Rosenfels will start this week. Enough said.

Greg Olsen, CHI
See Daniels, Owen. Replace Matt Schaub with Brian Griese and Sage Rosenfels with Rex Grossman. It’s that simple.

Todd Heap, BAL
Don’t even think about it for the rest of the season. Just drop him or bench him in dynasty leagues.
