WIRED UP! Print E-mail

Each week we will endeavor to search out those players who have performed above their earlier consideration to try and help you make those tough pickup decisions.

Please remember that there are many different types of leagues out there, with many different roster requirements, so while you may think that some of these players are already on rosters on your league, they may not be in someone else's.

Now on to this week's WIRED UP!

Josh McCown QB OAK– McCown had a decent game against Detroit, completing 66.6% of his passes and throwing for 313 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He did also throw 2 interceptions, so it wasn’t perfect, but in Zealots scoring, he was the 8th ranked QB.  Be very careful here as there is a decent chance that McCown will miss a couple of weeks with a broken index finger.  We won’t know until they absolutely have to tell us, as evidenced by last week’s starting QB shuffle by HC Lane Kiffin.  If he can’t go then…

Daunte Culpepper QB OAK – Culpepper will.  Pepper, pepper he’s our man, if he can’t do it, Walter can, Andrew, Andrew, he’s…yada, yada, yada…

Kyle Boller QB BAL - John Clayton of ESPN is reporting that Steve McNair will sit out in week 2.  if this does happen, Boller may surprise against a suspect Jets defense.

Jake Delhomme QB CARDavid Carr who?  Delhomme started the process of quieting critics with a solid performance against St Louis with 18 of 27 passing for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns.  In the next 3 weeks he faces Houston, Atlanta, and Tampa Bay, 22nd, 29th and 19th respectively in passing yards allowed per game last year.

Kellen Clemens QB NYJ – With starter Chad Pennington hopping off the field, and the crowd cheering for the arrival of savior Kellen Clemens, it is only fitting that fantasy players everywhere jump on the bandwagon.  Pennington has a high ankle sprain and will most likely miss a few games, but remember that the Jets play Baltimore in week 2.  Who’s third on the depth chart again????

Derek Anderson QB CLE – If you must, you must……But be very, very, quiet, I think he’s hunting wabbits.

Luke McCown QB TB – Garcia was dinged in the head and had to leave for a short while. McCown went 1-4 for 9 yards.  You are dinged in the head if you pick him up, or really, really, REALLY desperate.

Jared Lorenzen QB NYG - Will he or won't he?  That is the question. It's obvious Tom Coughlin is doing his best Bill Belicheck, or even Lane Kiffin impression, by not truly revealing the extent of Eli's injury. If Eli is out for a few weeks the team will probably go with The Rotund One, but just as easily could go with the veteran Anthony Wright, or maybe even pick up another QB that is available....Can anyone say Byron Leftwich????  Pick him up at your own at your own risk.

Lamont Jordan RB OAK – Many had their doubts about Jordan after last season, and he may even be available in smaller roster leagues, if he is ,don’t be afraid to pick him up now. He ran for 70 yards on 15 carries, or a 4.6 ypc average, plus added a TD.  When you add in the 9 receptions for 89 yards, that bumps his value up in PPR leagues, especially when you consider that he only had 10 receptions ALL of last year.

Derrick Ward RB NYG – Well the big load named Brandon Jacobs is already out for at least a month, so in comes Ward.  Ward did a nice job against Dallas in relief with 13 carries for 89 yards (6.8ypc) and added 4 receptions for 27 yards and a touchdown.  Temper expectations though, because with Eli out most defenses will crowd the box and try to force the Giants replacement QB, whomever that may be to beat them in the air.

Sammy Morris RB NEP – The Pats were not shy about getting Morris involved early. He carried the ball 11 times for 54 yards and caught two passes for 11 more.  He was used a couple of times in the redzone, so he should continue to see touches every game and may get the occasional TD.

Michael Pittman RB TBB – The Caddy is once again in the shop, pick up the Pinto.

Chris Brown RB TEN – Brown didn’t start this game, but he showed why he should be the starter.  He cruised for 175 yards on 19 carries or a whopping 9.2ypc, yowsa!  He goes against a suddenly tough Indy defense next week, but after that he faces the Saints, Falcons, Buccaneers and the Texans.  Seems like a recipe for success for me.  As long as he can hold off the injury bug. ....

Musa Smith RB BAL – Smith came in at times on Monday night to spell McGahee with normal backup Mike Anderson sidelined with an injury.  Temper his expectations with the fact that he plays in Baltimore’s offense.  For large roster leagues only.

Kenton Keith RB IND – He is only one hit away from starting for Indy, nuff said.

Eric Johnson TE NOS – He was Brees safety blanket and he made it through the game, what else do you need?

Jeff King TE CAR – King looks to be a good check down for Delhomme.  He was targeted 6 times and caught 5 of them for 35 yards. He could be a solid TE 2 if they continue to use him in this way.

Wes Welker WR NEP – Welker is clearly a better play than Donte Stallworth and I would rather have him on my fantasy team.  Welker was targeted 9 times and caught  6 of those for 61 yards and a touchdown. Stallworth was targeted twice.

Shaun McDonald WR DET – McDonald had a great game in week 1.  Don’t expect that every week, but he does play on a pass happy offense and will see some chances every game. Just the fact that he was targeted the most is enough for me to pick him up.

Ronald Curry WR OAK – Curry was easily the best receiver on the field on Sunday, and when you consider he was sharing it with Roy Williams and the already ordained hall of famer Calvin Johnson, that is saying a lot.  Curry was targeted 12 times, and caught ten of those for 133 yards and a touchdown.  If Culpepper starts though, you may see a decline in these numbers if he doesn't have the same chemistry with Curry.

Sam Hurd WR DAL – Hurd showed a flash of brilliance with a 51 yard touchdown against the Giants, but only targeted one other time.  He will get some chances, good luck figuring out when.

Amani Toomer WR NYG – Toomer should have allayed all injury fears with his performance on Sunday.  He was targeted 11 times, caught 9 of them for 91 yards, BUT IF Eli is truly out for a few games, you have to worry about Toomer’s value with The Ton O’Fun at the helm for the G-Men.

Arnaz Battle WR SFR – So you’re telling me Darrell Jackson is the #1, but that Battle clearly outplayed him in week 1, is that what you’re telling me?  I tell you, get used to it.  Jackson once again shows he does not understand the concept of catching the ball versus playing volleyball with it.

Jason Avant WR PHI – He had a good weekend in week 1.  First he doesn’t have to play for Michigan anymore and second he catches 3 passes for 54 yards and a touchdown. Doesn’t get much better than that for a young up-and-comer.

Mason Crosby K GBP – Unless your name is Mason Crosby.  After just winning the battle in camp over Dave Rayner, Crosby comes out in his first game as a pro and goes 3 for 3 on field goals, with distances at 53, 37 and 42 yards.  The 42 yarder incidentally came with 2 seconds left in the game and was the game winner.
