Keep Your Sixth Rounder - We Want a Bag of Chips Print E-mail

Let me say up front, I’m not a fan of Chiefs’ president and general manager Carl Peterson, and I am a fan of Chiefs’ quarterback Trent Green.  Peterson is arrogant and impersonal.  Green is a good community guy and a consummate professional.  Green wins the “good guy” contest hands down.

That said, the national media is blasting Peterson for doing exactly what he should be doing.  Why should the organization give up something for nothing?  The general consensus is that the sixth-round pick the Dolphins have offered for the quarterback is fair value for an aging quarterback coming off a shaky season and a violent concussion.  I’d argue that sixth-round picks aren’t worth anything to the Chiefs.

The Chiefs' sixth-round selections since 2000 have been Tre Stallings, Jeff Webb, Will Svitek, Khari Long, Jeris McIntyre, Jimmy Wilkerson, Alex Sulfsted, and Darnell Alford.  Those eight players have combined for three starts in the NFL, and Wilkerson is the only player who has made any kind of contribution to the team.   Eight players is a limited sample, but if you review the Chiefs’ late-round picks over the last fifteen years, you'll find more of the same.  The Chiefs' best selections after the fifth round since 1992 were Eric Warfield and Derrick Ransom.  Both players were taken in the 1998 draft, a year in which former head coach Marty Shottenheimer likely had an unusual amount of infuence over the team's selections.

The media blasted Peterson for not taking something for a player he might have to cut anyway.   Given the Chiefs’ track record with late-round picks, I’d argue Peterson wasn’t being offered anything of value.  Perhaps Carl knows his limitations when it comes to late round picks.  Maybe he knows he’d have been better off if he traded Green for a beach tag and a plate of sea scallops.

If Herm Edwards is sincere in his contention that the starting quarterback gig is up for grabs, KC should hang onto Green unless they can work out an equitable deal.  The Chiefs allegedly have the cap room, and Green is probably the best of the three quarterbacks on the roster.
