Welcome back to another edition of Did’ja Know, taking a look at some of the facts, figures, stats, and quirks of the sport we all love. Here are some of the things you might not have known about this week in the NFL:
Did’ja Know... that Chester Taylor evidently doesn’t want to get totally lost behind Adrian Peterson?
In week 11’s game against Oakland, Taylor achieved the week’s overall rushing lead of 164 yards. That was only the seventh time in his entire career that Chester Taylor has broken the 100-yard mark, and the first time since week 12 of 2006, when he ran for 136 yards against Arizona. The 164 yards was also just a few yards shy of his career high of 169 yards (week 7 of 2006 against Seattle). Over his career, Taylor has a total of 3,283 yards and an average of 38.6 yards per game he’s played in.
So far in his career, Did’ja Know which Taylor has more of: Rushing TDs, fumbles, or solo tackles? Give up? Its tackles – he has had 27 solo tackles (mainly playing special teams while behind Jamal Lewis in Baltimore). He has only had 16 fumbles and 13 rushing TDs (3 of which came last week).
Actually, Did’ja Know that one of Taylor’s main claims to NFL fame is that he got to watch from the sidelines as the backup RB behind both Jamal Lewis and Adrian Peterson when they each took turns breaking the NFL single-game rushing record (Jamal with 295 in 2003 and Peterson with 296 this year).
- OK – so nothing too Earth-shattering there, you say. How about this one, smarty-pants: Did’ja Know in what way Chester Taylor and “Charles in Charge” actor Scott Baio are linked?
Did’ja Know... that speaking of rushing in the NFC North -- The Lions rushing game has virtually disappeared over the last two weeks?
When Kevin Jones made it back on to the field following his prolonged absence with a foot injury, the thought was that the Lions would add a solid running dimension to their offense. In weeks 7 through 9 following the bye in week 6, Jones ran for 76, 105, and 71 yards. But something’s happened the last two weeks: First in week 10 against the Cardinals, the Lions had only -18 yards total rushing off of 8 carries. Negative 15 – the lowest team total since 1946. Jones had only 4 carries for -4 total yards. Then this last week against the Giants, the Lions managed only 25 yards off 11 carries, all by Jones. So in two weeks, as a team the Lions have gathered a whopping total of only 7 yards. Jones himself has 15 carries for 21 yards – a dismal 1.4 yards per carry.
- Hmmm – you knew that, huh? What about this: Did’ja Know what Kevin Jones, Gale Sayers, and Wilt Chamberlain all have in common?
Did’ja Know... what Thomas Jones did this last week that no-one in 35 previous games had been able to do?
In week 11 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Thomas Jones ran for 117 yards. That was the first time in 35 games that the Steelers have had an opposing ball-carrier break the hundred-yard mark. The last time was almost two full years ago, during week 12 of 2005 (11/28/2005). Edgerrin James was still a Colt when he ran for 124 yards off 29 carries in a win over the Steelers.
The 117 yards was the third time this season that Jones has broken the century mark. Did’ja Know that while Jones has only a 3.8 yard-per-carry average, he also has a very respectable 72.3 yards per game average for the past 10 weeks. Just for comparison, ex-teammate Cedric Benson of the Bears has only broken 100 yards once (101 yards in week 2), and has only a 3.3 yard-per-carry average and a 62.7 yards per game average. Think the Bears would like to call a “Do-Over” on deciding which back to keep?
- Didn’t stump ya, eh? Well try this one: Did’ja Know what Thomas Jones and his brother Julius both have in common with 1993 Miss America winner Leanze Cornett?
Did’ja Know... that with another loss this last week, the 0-10 Miami Dolphins have to win more than half of their remaining games not to set a franchise record for the worst Dolphin season ever?
The 17-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles was the 10th in 10 games for the once-feared Dolphins. The NFL team which currently holds the record of having the only undefeated season in the modern era now looks like they may break some new franchise records this season – all bad.
Up to this year, the Dolphins’ seasons with the least amount of wins came when they were part of the AFL. In their first year (1966), they went 3-11, and then had another 3-win season in 1969 (3-10-1). Since merging into the NFL for the 1970 season, the Dolphins have never had fewer than 4 wins – they went 4-12 in 2004 for their worst record since the merger.
- OK, ok – pretty common knowledge for any NFL fan. But how ‘bout this: Did’ja Know how the team chose the “Dolphins” nickname, and that they could have ended up as the “Missiles”, “Moons”, “Sharks”, or “Marauders” instead?
Did’ja Know... Peyton Manning did something last week that he hadn’t done since week 14 of the previous season?
For the first time this year, Manning failed to complete at least one TD pass. Yes, after two losses in a row, it was good for the defending NFL champs to get a win. But when Brodie Croyle (19 of 27 for 169 yards, 1 TD, and no INTs) passes for more yards and has a better day than Peyton does (16 of 32 for 163 yards, 0 Tds, and an INT), you know it’s an unusual week. It was also the first time this season that the Colts failed to score in the first half.
But Did’ja Know that even with all that, it wasn’t a totally horrible day for Peyton? The paltry 163 yards was still enough to push Manning over the 40,000 yard mark for career passing, making him the 11th in NFL history to do so. And a win is a win – the 13-10 victory over the Chiefs was Peyton’s 100th career win.
- Sure – Peyton is freakin’ everywhere on TV these days – you can’t help but know a lot about him. But here’s one: Manning’s rarely caught in the backfield by opposing DE’s, but Did’ja Know that Manning’s own “backfield” was involved in an incident back in 1996 that later led to a $300,000 settlement?
Did’ja Know... speaking of Quarterbacks who had rough weeks, that Carson Palmer set a new personal career record last week?
Palmer threw 4 interceptions in a 27-35 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in week 11, the highest amount of picks in a single game he’s ever thrown in the NFL. He evidently must have thought Antrel Rolle was in a Bengals uniform – Rolle had three of Palmers interceptions. In addition, Rolle returned two of them for TDs, and actually made it into the end-zone on the third, but it ended up nullified by a penalty.
Carson’s previous high mark (or low mark, depending on how you look at it) for interceptions was three – hit three times so far in his career: Week 14 of 2006 and weeks 3 and 12 of 2004.
Surprisingly, Carson had a decent total in terms of yards (329) and completion percentage (37 of 52 for 71.2%) – actually his 2nd highest percentage this year. Did’ja Know that those 52 passing attempts also tie his NFL career high for attempts in a single game? The last time was in that 3-pick week 3 of the 2004 season. In that 23-9 loss to the Ravens, Palmer completed only 25 of 52 passes (48.1%) for 164 yards, 1 TD, and 3 INTs. That gave him a passer rating in that game of only 43.4 – the lowest of his career. So the loss to the Cardinals was bad, but still not Palmer’s worst overall game.
Hmmmm – you’ve done a good job keeping up. So here’s your last chance – a toughie: Did’ja Know what trait quarterbacks Fran Tarkington, Troy Aikman, and Carson Palmer all share?
Go on, we dare ya, give it a shot and see if you can figure any of these out.
