Here is a list of 5 RBs I will not draft, unless of course they fall to me WELL below their normal draft position.
Clinton Portis: Washington Redskins – Portis had a very good overall season in 2007, but was fairly inconsistent. Out of the 13 weeks in the fantasy season, Portis only had over 100 total yards 4 times, although he did perform well in fantasy playoff season. Between his injury concerns that are very real, and the fact that there are still too many fantasy owners out there who think he will be a consistent top 5 back, I just have to look for other options. Willie Parker: Pittsburgh Steelers – Parker has only one season with over 4 TDs. Now he has to fight off a strong rookie in Rashard Mendenhall. In 2007 he had 100 yard rushing games in 4 of the first 5 games, but he only had 4 more in the last 11 games. He amassed 16 total TDs in 2006 and only 2 in 2007. In fact he fumbled more (3) than he scored. Who is the real Willie Parker? Let someone else find out. Maurice Jones-Drew: Jacksonville Jaguars – Jones-Drew burst on the scene as a rookie with over 1300 yards and 15 TDs, all while averaging 5.7 yards per carry. In 2007, with just about the same amount of touches, he dropped to 9 total TDs, 1100 yards and an average that dipped to 4.6 yards per carry. While these numbers are still good, his average draft position is too high for a player who only had 4 games of over 100 total yards in 2007. Laurence Maroney: New England Patriots – There are two main reasons I stay away from Maroney; his total lack of chances and his injury history. In 2007 he only had 2 games in the regular season where he attempted at least 20 rushes, but he had 7 with fewer than 15 attempts. In his two seasons he has already missed 5 games and was limited in quite a few others. Add to this that he does not get a lot of chances on third down, as he is not a great receiver. Now the team gets back a healthy Sammy Morris who will steal more chances, and it just makes me want to let another owner deal with his mediocrity. Any Denver RB: Denver Broncos – For the last 5 years, Denver’s leading rusher has been different every year. Denver’s Head Coach Mike Shanahan feels it is his mission in life to let a new runner play every year. Even when all consensus seems to favor one runner, it never works out that way. With this year’s group, Selvin Young, Andre Hall, Ryan Torain and newly acquired Michael Pittman, it is anyone’s guess who will be the starter in 2008. Let another owner use 3 or 4 roster spots while Shanahan plays his version of musical chairs. |
