Start 'Em - Sit 'Em Week 6 [10-9] Print E-mail
Written by Jason Wright
Thursday, 09 October 2008

Jason hit on almost 70% of his predictions in week 5. He would be MVP in basball with those percentages. At the very least we know it is a better percentage than how many calls referee Ed Hocholi gets right each week.

Here are Jason's Start  'Em and Sit 'Em recommendations for week 6. Remember that he always leaves out the studs you should never bench.

Quarterbacks:

Start 'Em:

David Garrard at DEN - I expect JAX will need to score points to keep pace with the Broncos this week. Garrard is starting to play better after a very slow start and he's also starting to get his receivers back. Matt Jones has stepped his play up again and will present a red zone mismatch against the Broncos.

Jason Campbell vs. STL - The Rams have one of the worst passing defenses in the league and can be beaten with the big play. Campbell will connect with at least one big play to Moss this week and possibly two and the Skins offense should roll the Rams.

Matt Cassel at SD - The Chargers have given up over 225 yards passing every game this season and average two TD passes allowed per week. Cassel connected on a long pass with Moss last week giving owners hope that the Patriots aren't going to tank the season and Moss won't quit. Those two factors make Cassel worth a shot to me.

Gus Frerotte vs. DET - The yardage has been good for Frerotte in his three starts; averaging around 230 per game. Expect the touchdowns to increase this week playing a terrible Lion secondary and team that was ripped by Orton and O'Sullivan in the last two weeks.

Sit 'Em:

Marc Bulger at WAS - The Skins pass defense has shut down McNabb, Eli Manning, Brees, and Warner already this season. Do you think Bulger and the Rams have a shot here?

Matt Ryan vs. CHI - Ryan has yet to reach the 200 yard mark with the Falcons focusing on a power running game and he will be under tremendous pressure this week from the Bears blitzing defense. Ryan had a tendency to throw interceptions in college under pressure and it wouldn't shock me if he turns the ball over often this week.

Jeff Garcia vs. CAR - The Panthers have allowed about 160 yards/game passing in the last month and just one touchdown pass in that span. It looks like Galloway is still out for TB and they just don't have many playmakers in the passing game. Gruden obviously doesn't have much confidence in Garcia since he was benched for Brian Griese in preseason. TB will try to control this game with Graham/Dunn and on defense.

Jon Kitna/Dan Orlovsky at MIN - The Vikings pass defense is known as one that can be beaten because teams don't even try to run against their great defensive line. However, Rodgers, Delhomme, and Collins combined for just one touchdown pass against the defense and P. Manning and Brees got once each. They are much tougher than some realize and Detroit is a mess right now. Avoid their QB situation. Actually avoid anyone with a Lion on their helmet.

Running Backs:

Start 'Em:

Matt Forte at ATL - The Falcons can be run on and the Bears will feed the ball to Forte in both the running and passing game. He's scored four times in five games already and I expect one or two more scores this week.

Brandon Jacobs at CLE - Dallas and Baltimore ran at will on the Browns earlier this season and Jacobs will too. 100 yards and a score is his floor this week and I wouldn't be shocked if he approaches 130 and a second score.

Willis McGahee at IND - The Colts run defense stinks especially without S Bob Sanders in the lineup. The Ravens will never beat the Colts if they attempt to get in a shootout. So watch the Ravens feed McGahee (and McClain) the ball 40+ times, which will translate to a pretty big day when it's all said and done.

Julius Jones vs. GB - The Packers defense is hurting and Jones is running well. Holmgren says Morris will be in the mix this week but Jones should still get 18-20 touches and turn that into 90 yards and a score.

Sit 'Em:

Ryan Grant at SEA - It's not a bad matchup for Grant, but he isn't running well and the Packers passing game is clicking right now. You also have to wonder how long before Brandon Jackson starts stealing more carries from Grant. I'm not playing Grant again until he shows me something positive.

Earnest Graham vs. CAR - The Panthers run defense has been quite stingy this year. I do think Gruden will try to establish Graham and Dunn this week but I don't think they will be successful. Larry Johnson managed two yards against this defense last week! Two yards! Wow. Graham should rack up 50-70 yards but I don't think the Bucs will find the end zone.

Edgerrin James vs. DAL - Romo and company will shred the Cards defense, meaning the Cards will abandon the running game early and turn it over the Warner through the air. James may steal a short touchdown run, but I predict he only sees about 10-12 carries for 40 yards or so.

Kevin Smith at MIN - There were rumors Rudi Johnson had taken over the starting job, but that was not the case last week. Regardless, you want no part of the Lions running game against Kevin Williams, Pat Williams, and the rest of the Vikings run defense.

Wide Receivers:

Start 'Em:

Santana Moss vs. STL - The Rams give up over 200 yards per game with many big plays to wide receivers. I expect Moss to make several plays in this game and abuse the Rams secondary.

Bernard Berrian vs. DET - Berrian has three straight games over 75 yards and scored last week. Expect that to continue against the Lions.

Reggie Brown at SF - Brown is the leading receiver for the Eagles in their last two games and McNabb should have no trouble beating up the 49er defense. 80-100 yards and a score is a good bet this week for Brown.

Chad Ocho Cinco at NYJ - Anyone that listens to me at all knows I am very down on #85. I think he's a very inconsistent player that produces a couple of monster games each season making the bottom line look nice at the end of the season. I think the Jets will put Revis on Houshmandzadeh this week and one of those monster games from Chad will occur as a result.

Sit 'Em:

Marvin Harrison vs. BAL - Harrison just isn't getting it done against anyone and this week the Colts will face a stiff challenge from the Ravens. Like Ryan Grant, Harrison sits for me until he shows he can produce this year.

Roy Williams at MIN - He has QB issues, they are on the road, they are playing a great defense, AND the team in general is a total disaster. Nothing looks appealing to me about Roy Williams right now.

Amani Toomer at CLE - The Giants should be able to control this game fairly easily, meaning the passing opportunities will not be there in the second half. Plaxico Burress is back and Dominik Hixon and Sinorice Moss have each earned playing time, which will most likely come from Toomer than Burress. Toomer has virtually no upside this week despite the matchup being good.

Bryant Johnson vs. PHI - Johnson is another guy that just isn't getting the job done. Isaac Bruce is the #1 receiver here and Josh Morgan will be getting more and more playing time. Johnson has just 27 yards on 3 catches (with 8 targets) in the last two weeks against below average defenses. The 49ers cannot depend on him and neither should you.

Tight Ends:

Start 'Em:

Ben Watson at SD - Watson is healthy again and played virtually every snap last week. His production was not good, but he did prove he's healthy. The Chargers linebackers and safeties can be beaten. The Patriots will get Watson more involved this week in a good matchup.

Anthony Fasano at HOU - The Texans give up good production to opposing tight ends and Miami (and Pennington) love throwing to the tight end. It makes Fasano a nice matchup play this week.

Visanthe Shiancoe vs. DET - He's been very active in the red zone this year with two scores and a couple of near misses and drops. The Vikings should have plenty of red zone chances against the Lions, giving Shiancoe a good chance at another score this week.

Sit 'Em:

Todd Heap at IND - The Ravens will ask him to help their tackles block against Freeney and Mathis this week, plus they will focus more on the running game. As a result, there will be fewer opportunities for Heap to make a play.

Donald Lee at SEA - The Seahawks have given up just 4-21-0 to tight ends the last three weeks making this a difficult matchup for Lee.

L.J. Smith at SF - The 49ers have given up an average of 22 yards/game to tight ends in the last three weeks. Smith is coming off another injury and is not one of McNabb's favorite targets. Stay away.

Who's Hot/Who's Not - Week 6 [10-7] Print E-mail
Written by Jim Day
Tuesday, 07 October 2008

Jim Day gives you a good look at those players that are playing at the top of their game and those who may not be playing up to snuff. Read on and enjoy.

Who’s Hot

Quarterbacks

Kyle Orton CHI – It’s like the light finally came on for Orton. In the last 3 weeks he has thrown for 7 TDs, including 3 against a very tough Eagles defense. In his next 3 games he faces Atlanta, Minnesota and Detroit, ranked 22nd, 24th and 29th against the pass respectively.  Start him unless you have a stud option.

Brett Favre NYJ – Favre is coming off a bye week, but in the two games before that he threw for a total of 9 TDs, including 6 in one game against Arizona.  It looks like he is finally getting in sync with his receivers, which will be bad news for Cincinnati, Oakland and Kansas City, his next 3 opponents.  Those 3 have allowed a total of 16 passing TDs, which probably has Brett licking his chops.

Tony Romo DAL – Romo has thrown for 476 yards and 6 TDs in the last 2 weeks, even though one of those games was a lost to Washington. He gets Arizona and St Louis next who have given up a total of 17 passing TDs to their opponents. Look for Romo to continue this trend.

Running Backs

Steve Slaton HOU – Slaton has gone over 100 total yards in two of the last 3 weeks, and has scored 4 times in that same time frame.  He is averaging 5.5 yards per carry, and is finally starting to get involved in the passing game. He has a surprisingly tough Miami defense in week 6, but then he faces Detroit and Cincinnati in the next two. Those should be big games for Slaton.

Ronnie Brown MIA – Brown was a force in week 3 against New England when he ran for 117 yards and 4 TDs. To add insult to injury, he also threw a TD that game.  He followed it up in week 5, after Miami’s bye week, with 125 yards and a touchdown against San Diego. Right now Brown is a must start.

Wide Receivers

Roddy White ATL – White had his best game of the season in week 5 against Green Bay with 8 catches for 132 yards and a TD. In his last 3 he is averaging over 6 receptions and 113 yards a game. He also has 2 TDs in those same games. White is obviously rookie QB Matt Ryan’s favorite receiver and Ryan is looking for him early and often.

Andre Johnson HOU – Johnson finally had the kind of game we have been looking for; 9 catches for 131 yards and a touchdown in week 5. Too bad it was with backup QB Sage Rosenfels at the helm. Starter Matt Schaub will be back in the saddle in week 6, so expect Johnson’s numbers to slip again.

Tight Ends

Jason Witten DAL – Witten already has 35 receptions for 442 yards and 2 TDs in just 5 games. If we projected that out to 16 games, at this pace he would end up with 112 receptions and 1414 yards, but only 6 TDs. I expect that by the end of the season though, the TD number will be higher, but the other two will be lower. Just a hunch. He has over 150 more yards than the next TE (Chris Cooley).

Chris Cooley WAS – Cooley only had 1 catch for 7 yards back in week one, but in the 4 games since he is averaging 6 catches and 70 yards a game, but with only 1 TD. He is seeing more targets every week, so expect these numbers to continue or even increase as QB Jason Campbell gets even more comfortable in this offense.

Kickers

John Carney NYG – Carney is tied for second in the league with 12 FGs made, oh and by the way, that is out of 12. He has also added 13 extra points. Don’t expect to see Lawrence Tynes back any time soon.

Matt Prater DEN – Prater had an illustrious start as a rookie last season with Atlanta by missing 3 out of his 4 FG attempts. He was then traded to Denver and was the kickoff specialist the rest of the season. This year he has made 12 of 13 attempts and 15 extra points. I guess he could do it.

Who’s Not

Quarterbacks

Brian Griese TBB – Griese was knocked out of last week’s game and may not play in week 6. If that isn’t enough, he has thrown 6 INTs since taking over for Jeff Garcia, while only throwing 4 TDs.

Kerry Collins TEN – Collins has not even thrown for 200 yards yet in a game this season and has only 3 TDs, while also having 3 INTs. Not exactly what you would expect on a team that is 5-0, but most of that magic is being done by Tennessee’s defense. Keep him on the bench.

Running Backs

Marshawn Lynch BUF – Lynch has only gone over 100 total yards once this season, back in week 3 against the Raiders. Consequentially, it was also the only week he was given 20 or more carries. In the two weeks since, he averaged only 16 carries and 3.5 yards per carry for a grand total of 112 yards. In his next two games he goes against San Diego and Miami who have given up only 2 TDs apiece.

Selvin Young DEN – Okay maybe the approach in Denver HAS finally changed. While the passing offense is throwing the ball all over the field, Young only has 1 TD on the season and has never run for more than 78 yards in any game. This is a definite departure from Denver running games of the past.

Wide Receivers

Chad Ocho Cinco CIN – Ocho Cinco may be the total of his yardage in 2008. Okay so maybe I exaggerate a little, but so far he has only topped 30 yards in a game twice…IN 5 GAMES!!!  Even though he looks a lot like that guy named Chad Johnson, he is playing more like a guy named….well Ocho Cinco. Stay away…..FAR away.

Calvin Johnson DET – Johnson started off the season strong with 236 yards and 2 TDs in the first two games, but since then it is like he isn’t even there. In the last two games he only has 6 receptions for 56 yards. Detroit is definitely struggling and as long as it continues don’t expect much from Johnson. Plus they are concentrating on making the cry-baby Roy Williams happy.

Tight Ends

Dante Rosario CAR – After pulling in 7 catches for 96 yards and a TD in week 1, he only has 5 receptions and 42 yards total since. He is not even an afterthought at this point; feel free to dump him if you bought into the week 1 hype.

Vernon Davis SFR – Right now Davis looking a lot like a Ryan Leaf bust. After coming into the league with so much hype, he has done nothing to show the talent that everyone thought he had.  In 5 games he is averaging 1 catch and 17 yards per game. If you haven’t already, it is time to say bye-bye.

Kickers

Mason Crosby GRB – Crosby only has 9 total attempts and has only made 7 of those. He is not getting enough chances to score consistently for you and starter Aaron Rodgers is one play away from being out for awhile. Look elsewhere.

Adam Vinatieri IND – Vinatieri is getting killed with the low scoring Indy offense and even when they score 31, as they did in week 5, Vinatieri only had 1 FG attempt and 4 extra points. As a matter of fact he only has 4 FGs on the season in 4 games.

Waiver Wire - Week 6 [10-6] Print E-mail
Written by Bill Cervi
Monday, 06 October 2008

Our resident waivers Guru, Bill Cervi is back to bring you the best waiver picks for week 6. There are some very nice pick-ups this week, so don't delay, READ IT NOW AND ENJOY.

Quarterbacks

8-10 Man Leagues

Kyle Orton – You have to give the Bears credit for playing far better than expected for the 2008 season and Kyle Orton’s performance is a big factor in their success. Orton tore it up in week 5 and even though it was against the worst team in football, the Lions, Orton is still managing the game very well, making good reads and getting the most out of the limited talent surrounding him.

Trent Edwards – Edwards was knocked out of week 5 action by a savage hit from SS Adrian Wilson and the Bills offense was never the same. The Bills need Edwards and he has all the tools needed to be a great QB in the NFL. He may not throw for 300 yards very often but if you are in a pinch or a former Brady owner, he makes a safe substitute and should get you 225-250 yards and 1-2 TDs most weeks.

12 Man Leagues

Matt Ryan – Ryan has really shown improvement the last 2 games. He has a great arm that can make all the throws and WRs that are good enough to get open and make the big play. The Falcons will be a run first team but when they trail they will let Ryan air it out more as the season progresses.

Joe Flacco – Flacco is another rookie QB that is redefining the NFL learning curve at the position, as he continues to perform at a high level. He will not be a 300 yard a week QB, but he is a very good QB with a cannon for an arm. He should only improve throughout the year as his confidence grows.

Brady Quinn – Poor Derek Anderson, The Browns seem to think that all their problems are due to the less than stellar play of DA, when the real reason for their struggles is their brutal schedule and the under-performance of their WRs and TEs. The Cleveland Brown fans somehow think that an unproven rookie can play better than a proven veteran, so if Anderson is forced out and your league doesn’t penalize for INTs, Quinn offers the smallest amount of upside considering the skill positions he has to work with.

Running Backs

8-10 Man Leagues

Tim Hightower – This kid just looks better and better every week and he had another good week in week 5 vs. the Bills scoring 2 more times. If you are in a TD only league he would make a great bye week filler and may even be worth starting depending on your roster. He may not pile up the yardage, but he is almost a lock to score every week.

Maurice Morris – Some people may have dropped MoMo after he was injured week #1, but believe me Morris was the starter going into week #1 and will eventually be the starter again. Julius Jones was the benefactor of a soft schedule vs. the run. He still looks as slow as ever, plodding through the line and showing lapses in concentration many times.

Felix Jones – Jones saw some extra reps this week vs. Cincy and he made the most of his 9 carries gaining 96 yards and a TD. I think the Cowboys feel that he is ready to step up and be a bigger part of the offense. Make no mistake, MBIII is still the man but Jones has proven he deserves some more playing time and he will get it.

12 Man Leagues

Mewelde Moore – Moore showed some nice moves vs. the Jags while posting 17 carries for 99 yards and 3 catches for 17 yards. The Steelers have a bye in week 6 but Moore showed enough speed and vision to warrant a spot on your roster, especially if you have Willie Parker on your team. But even if not, Moore still deserves a look considering the amount of time Parker has missed the last 2 years.

Ryan Torain – I know, I know, another Denver RB? Considering it is week 6 and you are basically looking to add depth why not take a flyer on the rookie who has the size and speed to be the feature back in Denver when he returns from injury. None of the current backs have stepped up so the opportunity may be there for some significant playing time.

Honorable Mention; Warrick Dunn, Leon Washington, Jerious Norwood

Wide Receivers

8-10 Man Leagues

Steve Breaston – Breaston has earned himself the #3 WR role for the high powered Cardinal Passing offense. In week 5 he proved that he is capable of starting when he filled in for the injured Anquan Boldin. Breaston may get another start in week 6, but even if he goes back to the #3 WR he will post good enough numbers to be a bye week or injury filler, especially if your league awards 1 point per reception.

Lance Moore – Moore is a shifty, smaller WR who runs great routes and has very good rapport with Drew Brees. Moore has played well enough to warrant starting in ppr leagues and he should continue his strong play even after Patten and Colston return from injury.

12 Man Leagues

Donnie Avery – The Rams will be looking to the rookie WR to play a significant role in their passing game as the season continues and he is capable of a big play at any time. Considering the Rams will be playing from behind most weeks, Avery has a good chance to be the garbage time production king in St Louis.

Greg Camarillo – Camarillo is a poor mans Wes Welker, as his play is similar to that of Welker and Houston’s WR Kevin Walter. He is not big or flashy but he has earned the trust of the Dolphin coaches and QB Pennington, so his week 5 numbers of 6 catches for 68 yards and a TD may become a regular appearance in the box scores. If you are in a ppr league Camarillo is even a more attractive option.

Nate Washington – Washington showed his versatility Sunday night vs. a respectable Jag secondary posting 6 catches for 94 yards and a TD. It would be unrealistic to expect that every week but the Steelers have found a reliable wr that can spread out the Defense and give Big Ben a better chance of staying vertical long enough to complete a pass. Washington is a proven Vet that runs good routes and should be a match up type player that may provide some depth.

Honorable Mention: Domenic Hixon, Mike Walker, Ted Ginn, Early Doucet, Brandon Stokely, Rashied Davis

Tight End

All Leagues

Zach Miller – Some may have given up on this talented second year TE, so if he is laying around your WW grab him immediately. I am sure the new coaching staff will game plan to keep their best receiving talent involved in the game from here on out. The Raiders will be playing from behind all year so Miller should pad his stats in the 4th quarter every week.

Kevin Boss – Boss has been quiet up to now, but that will all change very soon as the Giants schedule will become much more difficult vs. the run. Boss should become a reliable reserve TE who will make a nice spot starter if given the right match up.

Dustin Keller – The Jets rookie TE is starting to have the game slow down for him as he grasps more of the offense and improves on his blocking assignments. Favre already likes him and seems to keep him in his progressions so 5-7 TDs is a real possibility for this talented young TE.

Honorable Mention: Olsen, Shiancoe

Kickers

All Leagues

Matt Prater – The Broncos offense is lethal. They are moving the ball at will and when they stall is MONEY!

Josh Scobee – Josh has been on fire and is the benefactor of the Jags troubles in the red zone. He only had 3 points this past week but he had made 3 FGs in each of the prior 3 games.

Defense

All Leagues

Buffalo Bills – The Bills are healthy for the 2008 campaign and they will wreak havoc on their opponents generating more than their share of sacks, interceptions, and fumbles. But the best part about the Buffalo D is their Special teams, with McGee, McKelvin and Roscoe Parrish all returning kicks.

Tennessee Titans – The Titan front 7 are ferocious and will apply pressure on opposing QBs all year and their DBs and Safeties will take advantage of the hurried passes and near sacks.

Studs, Duds & Sleepers Week 5 [10-4] Print E-mail
Written by Admin
Saturday, 04 October 2008

Each week some members of the Whiz Staff will get together and list 1 player that falls into these 3 categories, STUDS, DUDS & SLEEPERS. Last week we took it on the chin with our performances, but we vow that this week will be different.

Here are the staff’s picks for week 5. Please feel free to let us know if you don’t agree with any of our picks.

Jim Day’s (Taz) picks:

Stud: So I am trying to pick myself up from my 0-3 call last week, and really trying to dig into some real winners this week. To start out, I will pick Dallas RB Marion Barber as my Stud for week 5. A lot was made last week that TO didn’t get the ball enough, but most people realize the two that were more affected were Marion Barber and rookie Felix Jones. Barber only had 8 carries and Jones had none. I look for them to rectify that this week against a weak Cincy defense and I look for Barber to go well over 100 yards and score at least twice.

Dud: For my Dud this week, I am going for New Orleans RB Reggie Bush. Not only is he going against a tough front 7 of the Vikings, but he will lose a ton of touches to Deuce McAllister. Bush only touched the ball 15 times in week 4 for a paltry 38 yards, look for more of the same this week.

Sleeper: For my sleeper I am going to pick a player I didn’t have a lot of faith in early in the season, but has since proved me wrong, Houston rookie RB Steve Slaton. Against 3 very tough defenses so far (Pitt, Tenn, & Jack), Slaton has averaged a very respectable 4.7 yards per carry, although he has only scored once. Look for that to change this week as he faces a toothless Indy run defense, especially without their best run defender, Bob Sanders. Indy is currently 31st against the run. You do the math. Look for close to 100 yards and a touchdown.

Jason Wright’s picks:

Stud Chicago RB Matt Forte looks great so far in his rookie season.  He's had success on the ground and in the air each week and now gets to face possibly the worst defense in the league.  I think 150 total yards and at least one score is a high probability for Forte.

Dud: Tennessee RB Lendale White couldn't run inside on the Vikings last week and he won't do so on the Ravens either.  Tennessee will focus more on getting Chris Johnson outside of the tackles to make plays with a little of Lendale here and there to keep things honest.  But I don't see much above 25 yards on 10 carries or less this week and his chances of scoring a low too.

Sleeper: Green Bay RB Ryan Grant has 186 yards on 55 carries this year.  Remove one run against the Vikings that went for 57 yards and he has 129 yards on 54 carries, which is under 2.5 yards per carry.  Ouch.  Well, he has a great matchup this week against the Falcons and with Rodgers banged up, it's time for Green Bay to lean on Grant.  It's put up and shut up time for him and I think he'll put up and get himself back on the fantasy map.

Rich Burkhardt's (Psychocat) picks:

Stud:
Well, Jason beat me to the guy I was originally going to pick here; I also forsee Forte having a huge day. So in stead I'll go with Falcon's RB Michael Turner, who faces a Packer's defense that is ranked 26th in the league against the rush. I'm going to go with numbers of around 125+ and two TDs for Turner.

Dud:
Let's go with a bit of a surprise here: usually reliable Redskins' RB Clinton Portis. I'd normally go with Portis to have a pretty big day against most teams, but this week he has a real tough matchup in the NFC East rival Eagles. The Philly Birds have the #1 defense against the run, allowing just 53.8 yds per game rushing and 1 TD all season. Portis will probably wind up with somewhere around that average and no scores.

Sleeper:
I'll break the mold here so far and go with a WR, the Arizona Cardinal's Steve Breaston. Teammate Anquon Boldin is out for a couple of weeks with a sinus fracture, so Breaston will start in his place opposite Larry Fitgerald. Fitz will undoubtedly draw extra attention form the Bills' defense with Boldin gone, which means Breaston should get a lot of looks. He had 9 catches for 122 yds last week, expect similar numbers and a TD this week.
