Every fantasy player I know wants to grab that one rookie player who will make the biggest impact during his rookie season while no one else sees him coming. They don't mind going out on a limb because if they gamble and hit the jackpot, they can crow all season long. Even if they miss badly, it was just a late round pick on a guy who wasn't supposed to make the cut anyway. Trying to find those rookies can sometimes be a problem, as it is just not an exact science. For every first-round draft pick like Reggie Bush, there is a pick spent on Kyle Boller or William Green. In the late rounds, for every pick like Marques Colston, there are many who never see an actual NFL play.....well except for on tv. For each player like Adrian Peterson, Paul Posluszny, and Calvin Johnson, there are a ton of players who get drafted late, or who are not drafted at all, and come into camp and just shine right through everyone else. Here are a few of those players:
WR James Jones GBP - Jones was a third round pick of the Packers, and played his collegiate ball at San Jose State. Jones does not have blazing speed, but he runs very precise routes, and to a QB like Farve, that is a major part of the battle. If He feels confident that the WR will be where he is supposed to be, then he will make sure to get that receiver the ball. Jones should beat out veteran Robert Ferguson for the #3 role sooner rather than later. LB LaMarr Woodley PIT - Woodley has done nothing but amaze others in camp. He is very quick in rushing the passer, while also having the size to be a force in stopping the run. He also has natural speed to operate in open space. He has already passed first round pick Lawrence Timmons. While he is not a guarantee to start at OLB, he will definitely be involved as the nickel rusher at the least. LB Zac Diles HOU - Diles is a 7th round pick, that you have probably never heard of. He has been impressing Houston coaches with his vicious hitting and field instincts. Head Coach Gary Kubiak had this to say about the kid, "He’s been exceptional. Zac’s been here every day. He’s a very steady player and the things he did on the practice field, he went and did in the stadium on Saturday night, so I think we know we can count on this kid. There’s still a long way to go, but he sure looks like he can be able to help us.” Solid words for a seventh round pick. Keep your eye on him. CB Marcus McCauley MIN - McCauley was once projected as a top ten pick, but ended up sliding into the third round for no apparent reason. He is quickly making up for it, as he has just been a force in camp and in the team's first preseason game. He has been making interceptions in almost every practice. Darren Sharper believes that McCauley has "IT", and will be a force for quite a few years. For right now it looks as if McCauley has at least sewn up the nickel back assignment, but in this league anything can happen. RB Kenneth Darby TBB - Darby is another seventh round pick that is making a name for himself in camp. As of now he is listed 3rd on the depth chart behind incumbent, but once again injured, starter Cadillac Williams and Michael Pittman, who is taking snaps at FB. He did not hurt himself by rushing for 84 yards on 15 carries in the team's first preseason game against the Patriots. He also caught 1 pass for 13 yards. He has a long way to go, or 1 injury or another flat cadillac tire could make it happen now. TE Brent Celek PHI - Celek is a big target at 6'4" and 255lbs, but was not known for the best hands. He has worked hard at that aspect of his game since getting drafted in the fifth round of this year's draft. So far it seems to have worked. He has been getting plenty of reps, and most of them with the first team since LJ Smith has a setback to his sports hernia injury. He has been solid in camp, and was the Eagles leading receiver in the first preseason game against Baltimore. He had 4 receptions for 59 yards on 7 targets. Not a bad stat line for any TE against Baltimore. If Smith's injury troubles him into the season, Celek could be an awesome sleeper. LB Justine Rogers NEP - Rogers was a sixth round choice out of SMU for the Patriots. He had a decent college career, but it was thought that he was a project at this level. So far he has shown good quickness and the ability to wrap up a tackle. He didn't hurt his chances with 6 tackles and a sack in the game against Tampa Bay. He has a lot of players in front of him, but if he keeps up this type of play, he may make the roster yet, and with the age of NE's linebackers, he could be their future. CB Trumaine McBride CHI - McBride is possibly the biggest surprise on this list. A seventh round pick out of Ole Miss, McBride has been lighting up Bears camp. He has some knowledge of the cover 2 from college, but he has been a real standout on man to man coverage. "Trumaine has been outstanding," defensive backs coach Steve Wilks said. "We're real excited about the things we have seen out of him thus far. He's really picking up the defense and has been making plays all camp. He has outstanding feet and a great knack for the football." He has already been working almost exclusively with the second team, and his play allowed the team to release veteran player Dante Wesley. He is behind Nathan Vasher and Charles Tillman, but as said above, one injury and..... Ok, that's enough for now. More to follow soon. If you know of someone you think should be on this list, just let me know.
