The San Francisco 49ers have been among the more active teams in free agency this year, adding former Cincinnati Bengals' franchise defensive end Justin Smith to the squad Saturday morning. Smith spent his previous seven years in the league with the Bengals, registering 43 1/2 career sacks. 2007 was a down season for him, posting only two. This is actually a very interesting signing. It seems unlikely that the 49ers would sign a player like Smith and stay in the 3-4 defensive scheme. A change in scheme had been present in whispers for a few months now, but the Smith deal appears to seal the 3-4's fate in San Francisco. |
