Thursday was the first day that teams could use the tag to restrict players' entry into free agency. The tag essentially prevents other teams from signing Smith because the Eagles would both have the right to match any offer, and would receive two first round draft picks as compensation if they decline to match. It is a bit of a surprise that they would tag Smith because a) while he is a good player, he isn't in the true top-tier of tight ends, and b) while he has played almost every game, he has failed to do so at full effectiveness due to a litany of injuries. Maybe if b) can be avoided, a) will emerge... but it seems increasingly unlikely. |
