The St. Louis Rams notified veteran linebacker Dexter Coakley that they will be releasing him as reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Coakley had signed a five-year, $14.15 million free agent deal with the Rams in 2005 after being with the Dallas Cowboys for eight years. He was a starter for the team in 2005 and registered 42 tackles, two sacks and an interception in 12 games before being suffering season-ending leg and ankle injuries. He was a backup in 2006 and started five games when linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa was injured. The Rams are interested in re-signing Coakley to a lesser contract to backup Tinisamoa.
